We are truly grateful for all the recognition and local support Samohi receives from parents, the community and the City of Santa Monica. However, the State Budget is a matter of grave concern for all of California's public schools and Samohi is no exception. We will continue to monitor the state funding situation and communicate to our elected officials our belief that California's students deserve adequately funded, good schools! Please join us in this essential work. Please see page 2 for more information on how you can help. Karen Dickerson, , akiwwest2000@yahoo.com Cheri Orgel, , clorgel@aol.com Samohi PTSA Co-presidents April 12th PTSA Meeting: The Pathway to College for Students with Disabilities and What Students Need To Know To Transition Out of High School Tuesday, April 12th, 2005 at 7 pm in the student cafeteria The PTSA is joining the Special Education District Advisory Committee in presenting this program for parents, teachers and students. Which students are best suited for a competitive college experience and what are some alternatives? What accommodations are likely to enable particular students to succeed in competitive work or academic settings and how should these students go about disclosing their learning disability and assuring their rights to these entitlements? What activities need to take place during a student s middle and high school career to build the self-confidence and self-advocacy skills that are essential to post-secondary success? What particular supports are most likely to succeed in providing students the help they need in critical areas such as goal setting, time management, note-taking, and seeking assistance? We will also have materials and speakers available from local vocational agencies and training centers. Spanish translation is provided at all PTSA meetings. All are invited! 2nd Semester Progress Reports and Report Card Schedule 6th week grading period ended March 11: Progress reports should have been received during Spring Break (mailing paid for by PTSA) 12th week grading period ends May 6: Progress reports will be mailed home week of May 9th 2nd semester ends June 24: Semester Report Card will be mailed home week of June 27th Message from the Principal, Dr. Straus Dear Parents, We have just finished our accreditation process with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It has been an intense examination of our progress as a school in meeting the academic needs of our students, based on expected standards. The process looked at all facets of our program. We did an extensive self-study as part of the accreditation and a visiting team of eight validated our study, interviewing parents, students, as well as site and District staff. They produced a document that summarized our profile, and looked in depth at the quality of the program at Santa Monica High School. Areas of strength and key issues were identified for the next three to six years of improvement efforts at Samohi. We will be developing an action plan to specifically address the schoolwide critical areas for follow up. Please be sure to join me at our May PTSA meeting when I will review all the WASC findings and talk about our plans to ensure that all Samohi students experience academic success. The following summarizes the general findings by the accreditation team: Schoolwide Areas of Strength 1. Implementation of smaller learning communities in the format of Houses allows for better communication between students, parents and the school so stakeholders have the opportunity to work together to meet the academic needs of students. 2. The Pinnacle on-line program is a useful tool for communicating assignments and progress to parents, students and school. 3. The House system provides for a low advisor-student ratio, which allows for greater personalization and access to services. continued on page 2 Have you logged on to Samohi s website today? The Samohi website is updated daily. The daily Blue Bulletin, that is read to students, is posted daily. Check it out! Gang Violence Prevention Workshop Saturday, April 9, John Adams Middle School 9 a.m. to 12 noon All are invited to attend this second community workshop sponsored by the City of Santa Monica and State Senator Sheila Kuehl. Spanish translation and refreshments will be provided. More information about the April 9 workshop is available online at StopGangViolence.smgov.net, along with details of the work accomplished at the first workshop that was held February 26.

2 The state of the state budget CARAVAN FOR KIDS Wednesday, April 27 - Thursday, April 28 Join State & Local PTAs as parents and children protest the Governor s proposed budget. Insist that Governor Schwarzenegger and the Legislature: Honor the promise to restore $2 billion to California schools. Uphold Proposition 98 Constitutional funding guarantee for public schools approved by the voters. Rebuild California s commitment to education. The Caravan for Kids begins Wednesday, April 27 We will travel to Sacramento, spend the night, and make our voices heard at the Capitol on Thursday, April 28 at Noon. We will make history. Be a part of it. Join the Caravan For Kids! For more information: (310) or info@excellentpublicschools.org The Future of California s K-12 Public Schools Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The RAND Corporation, 1776 Main Street, Santa Monica Stephen J. Carroll, principal investigator of RAND's recently published study, California's K-12 Public Schools: How are They Doing? will start the morning with a presentation of key findings. A small panel comprised of a superintendent, a principal and a teacher will discuss the implications of the RAND findings at their schools. A panel of state policymakers will provide perspectives from those who are already working on these issues in Sacramento and around the state, including information on what we can expect to see over the coming several months and what local communities can do to help. This will be the first large public gathering to attend a policy forum at RAND's new headquarters in Santa Monica. For reservations and more information, please contact: (310) or at Iao@rand.org Message from Dr. Straus, continued from page 1 4. Samohi has a strong system of on-site counseling and community resources available to assist students and families. 5. Faculty and staff demonstrate professionalism, creativity and the nurturing of students. 6. The District supports the restructuring effort to meet their vision. Important! How you can help... Please leave a message for the Governor by calling (916) You can write to Governor Schwarzenegger at State Capitol, Sacramento, CA To send an , go to Proposed State Education Budget PTA is very worried about the Governor's proposed budget for Here's why: This budget breaks the promises made last year. Last year the Education Coalition, representing all facets of the education community, worked with the Governor and accepted his plea to suspend for one year the money schools were legally owed by Proposition 98 (which is a voter approved amendment to our state s constitution) based on his personal guarantee to resume Prop 98 monies this year. Now he s changed his mind. This is despite the fact that state revenues are actually higher this year than what was projected when the promise was made. The impact of this broken promise is the loss of anticipated revenue to the State s public schools of nearly 2 billion dollars for next year. In terms of Santa Monica-Malibu, it means a loss of nearly 6 million dollars in funds that would have been owed to us under the agreement. The Governor s budget gives with one hand, but takes with the other. The increase that is included in one portion of the budget (which is being touted by the Governor s office) is offset by the fact that the budget shifts ongoing costs out of the state s budget onto the shoulders of the individual school districts. Under the proposal, each district will have to assume the state s share of the teacher retirement program. For SMMUSD, this cost alone is about $1.2 million! Weakening Prop 98 will make things bad now, and worse later. Prop 98 was approved by voters to guarantee a minimum funding level for education. The Governor s proposals will eviscerate Prop 98 and reduce funding levels for years and years to come. This is completely contrary to what is needed. A recent report by Education Week, Quality Counts 2005, ranked California 44th in the nation in perpupil funding, and a study by the RAND Corporation documents the California K-12 school system s fall from being a national leader 30 years ago to its current ranking near the bottom in every objective category. We need our Governor to address this crisis intelligently The Legislature established the Quality Education Commission two years ago to take a thoughtful, comprehensive look at what it really costs to educate a child and the best way to finance that. But the Governor has not even made his appointments to the commission! GOOD SCHOOLS ARE GOOD FOR EVERYONE! A strong public education system is vital to California s well-being in a global society. Business leaders recognize that a strong economy requires a first-class education system. Please let the Governor know you expect him to work to improve our public schools and provide increased and adequate funding! 4. Develop and implement strategies to accurately assess disaggregated school data and distribute it to staff in ways that may be used effectively by teachers to guide instruction. 5. Increase communication between all stakeholders in the decisionmaking process to promote student achievement. Please continue to look in the mail for our newsletters, regular academic progress reports, check online to monitor your student s academic progress through our Pinnacle system and view our updated website, full of current information to assist you and your student to make the most of the four years here at Samohi. Thank you for all you do to support your student s progress here and for your additional efforts to make a difference for all students at Samohi. Our parents and community make a significant difference in our ability to serve our students well and to provide additional support, resources and opportunities for our 3400 student population. Schoolwide Critical Areas for Follow-up 1. The enrollment in advanced level courses needs to more accurately reflect the school s diverse population. 2. Implementation of common semester assessments, benchmarks and pacing plans in subject-alike classes will provide assessment information, in addition to CAHSEE and STAR data, for analysis and to drive curricular change. 3. The lack of involvement of students in the decision-making process Sincerely, limits the enhancement of school culture at Samohi. 3 Things you need to know Policies, procedures and events New laws regarding Inhaler and Epi Pen Recent state legislation now allows students to carry and selfadminister inhaled asthma medication and auto-injectable epinephrine at school. The school district needs to receive a statement from the student's physician detailing the name of the medication and the method, amount and time schedules for administration. In addition, the student's parent or guardian must consent in writing to the selfadministration and provide a release for the school nurse. A student may be subject to disciplinary action under Ed Code if the student uses inhaled asthma medication or auto-injectable epinephrine in a manner inconsistent with the law. 5 College Samohi s Future Center is open to all parents and students, Monday-Friday 7:30 am- 4 pm. located in the Administration Bldg., Room 500. Please call counselors Clara Beard (last names A-L), ext 324 or Ada Hollie (last names M-Z), ext 328 if you would like to make an appointment. College Seekers and Planners! Tips from Samohi s Future Center and Joyce Smith (collegecompass@aol.com) Your mission is to find a good college for YOU, the type that will fit YOUR needs and interests. Talk with your parents, teachers and counselors to help you decide. Discuss the pros and cons of schools you are considering with recent graduates or students currently attending the school(s). When possible, personally visit the campus(es). Many schools will arrange an overnight/weekend stay in the dorm. Before choosing a college, write down the things you are looking for in a college. For example: Curriculum: Does the college offer a program in your field of interest? Location: Do you want to attend college near home, or do you want to go to another section of the country, such as New England? Size: Do you want to go to a small, medium-size or large college? Housing: Do you want to live in a dorm or would you rather live with a few people? Religious Affiliation: Do you want to attend a college administered by a particular religious denomination? Cost: Do you have specific plans for financing your college education? Whether you are in the beginning research stage or the final decision stage, remember: SENIORS 1. Keep up your GPA during this last semester. Even if you are admitted to a college, they will rescind your admission if they see a major drop in your grade. 2. Once admitted to a college go and visit it before you make your final decision if possible. 3. And don t forget to have a meaningful summer working, studying or volunteering! JUNIORS 1. Now is the time to start seriously thinking about college. 2. Use the Ruggs Recommendations on the Colleges to start your search. This book lists colleges according to area of interest and selectivity. Copies are in The Future Center. You can also use the Bridges - Choices Planner software (see column at right). 3. Visit different kinds of colleges here in the LA area: Big and public UCLA, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge Big & private USC, Loyola Marymount Small & private the Claremont colleges (Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Scripps, Pitzer), Occidental 4. Think about next year s course selection and make sure that it is as rigorous as your past three years. 5. UC s and private colleges want SAT II s plan to take some of these this spring and schedule them around any AP exams you are taking. 6. Think about who you might want to write your teacher recommendations - private colleges ask for two recommendations from teachers you have had only in either your 11th or 12th grade years. 7. And don t forget to have a meaningful summer working, studying, camping or volunteering! SOPHOMORES and FRESHMEN 1. Think about your schedule for next year choose courses that demonstrate your willingness to challenge yourself. 2. Keep a personal file of your activities and honors and awards. 3. Go to and see what the changes are for the new SAT I test as of May 2005 (that is when many of you will take it). 4. And don t forget to have a meaningful summer working, studying, camping or volunteering! Important Information for Seniors Senior Scholarship and Honors Evening: June 7, 2005 Seniors! Below are some of the notes we have received from the staff. Thanks to all who have contributed through Direct Donation and made these teacher and departmental grants possible! At a time when we are feeling the sting of government policies that do not have the best interests of our schools or children at heart, your generous support is much appreciated. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for your willingness to help out with classroom supplies. In appreciation, Reem Baroody, Social Studies Once again, your generosity and care has augmented, actually saved, my program. The enclosed receipts include a text book I have needed, food rewards and party treats that have created contentment and fish that filled our tank and room with interest. Thank you for your involvement. It is deeply appreciated. Pamela Vescera, Special Education Using more than my allotted grant money, I purchased a set of French philosophy and Spanish literature posters from my classroom, as well as the 2004 Schau ins Land German audio magazine series from the Champs- Elysees production company. Sincere thanks for making these classroom resources possible! Berkeley Blatz, German Thank you for your support. Liane Sato, Freshman Seminar Thank you for the opportunity to buy supplies for my classroom. I was able to purchase: markers to make posters for students presentations, a book of primary sources to help students connect with the curriculum, and many other items. Thank you so much, Amy Bisson, US History Thank you very much! I really appreciate this gift. Annamarie Fella, Mathematics I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and the full PTSA for your generous departmental grant, as well as your ongoing quest to help offset the many hundreds (and sometimes 1000s) of dollars science teachers contribute out-of-pocket to the teaching endeavor. I know everyone in my department appreciates your help immensely.
