Have your parents review your assignments daily as a way to keep them informed about your progress and the content of your classes. 4 SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY A responsible Burnett student wears an appropriate uniform every day. Comments such as "My pants are in the wash" or "My shirt is dirty" are not legitimate excuses for being out of uniform. The only exception is if the student has received a Free Dress Day. All clothing expectations have not been listed. Anything that poses a disruption to the learning environment or is a safety concern shall not be allowed, even if it is not listed on this page. The following are all prohibited: clothing or accessories that may be gang-related, sexually suggestive, or items that refer to illegal substances. SHIRTS Forest green, white, or gray polo or dress shirt Collared shirt must be the outer shirt School-sponsored or college shirts may be worn any day No tank tops or shirts worn inside-out Undershirts must be solid forest green, white, gray, or black and tucked in Shirts may not hang lower than your pockets or be higher than your waist Shirts must be buttoned to an appropriate height SWEATER, SWEATSHIRT & JACKET No shades of red or blue Uniform shirt must be worn underneath Must be worn right side out Hoods may be worn on cold/wet days only No professional sports team apparel PANTS & SHORTS Gray or khaki (tan) trousers or shorts Hemmed; no staples, pins, rubber bands or tape Pants must fit at the waistline, be size appropriate, and must not sag or be skintight No holes, spandex, sweats, jog, or sport pants Shorts must be no shorter than 2 inches above the knee Undergarments should not be seen SKIRT Forest green, gray, khaki (tan) or Campbell plaid pleated skirt Worn or sitting at the normal waistline. 5 ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES Daily attendance at school is essential for academic success; furthermore, it is the law. Thus, students are expected to be in school every day. Each time your child is absent, notify the school (phone or written note) explaining the absence. A student has five days to submit a note to excuse unexcused absences. Bring notes to the student window before 7:45 a.m., the day the student returns to school. Notes/phone calls explaining a student s absence from school must include the following information: Student's name & ID number Date(s) of absence Reason for absence Name and relationship to the student of the person calling or writing the note A contact phone number, in case we need to verify information PROCEDIMIENTOS DE ASISTENCIA La asistencia diaria a la escuela es esencial para el éxito académico; además, es la ley. 6 EARLY CHECKOUT Parents/guardians are urged to make dental, medical and other appointments for students after school. If a student must be checked out during the school day, parents must report to the Office to sign out the student. Office personnel will call the student out of class. Students must have parent permission before early checkout will be permitted. No student will be allowed to check himself out, walk home, or leave the school campus without confirmed parental permission. TARDY TO SCHOOL Since school starts at 7:50 a.m., students should arrive at school no later than 7:40 a.m. Students are expected to be seated and ready to learn when the Tardy Bell rings at 7:50 a.m. Students arriving after 7:50 a.m. will be marked Tardy to Period 1. If a student arrives 10 minutes after school starts, he/she is to report directly to the Student Window. Teachers will implement the Burnett Tardy Policy. Phone call or letter will notify parents/guardians of chronic tardy offenders that detention or Saturday School has been assigned. Tardy Tardy BURNETT TARDY POLICY Students will be considered tardy to class if they are not in the assigned learning place when the Tardy bell rings. Tardiness is recorded on the class roster and is cumulative for each month. Tardy #1: Teacher records and gives warning to the student. Primer Marca Tardy #2-4: Teacher records and documents parent contact (call or note). Teacher gives the student a Segunda Marca consequence. Tardy #5: Teacher records. Administrator assigns a Saturday School. Tercer Marca Random Tardy Sweeps may occur without notice wherein any student found tardy will be assigned Cuarta a Marca Saturday School, regardless of how many previous tardy s have been recorded. Failure to serve assigned Saturday School will result in further disciplinary measures, such as assignment to House Suspension, and/or loss of activities or privileges. 7 PARENT VISITS & CONFERENCES Parents/guardians are invited to visit the school regularly and to be involved in all school activities. All visitors, including parents/guardians, are required to report directly to the school Office and to sign in with an office clerk prior to going to any location on campus. A visitor's badge will be issued and must be worn while on the school campus. VISITAS & CONFERENCIAS DE PADRES Padres/custodios son invitados a visitar la escuela regularmente y a involucrarse en todas las actividades escolares. Students are responsible for keeping library books clean and safe. Students will be charged for library books that are lost or damaged. Textbooks are loaned to students at the beginning of the school year or when a student enrolls at Burnett. Students are responsible for keeping textbooks covered, clean and safe. Students will be charged for textbooks that are lost or damaged. Students will incur fines and other consequences if they do not return loaned textbooks at the end of the school year. Transferring students must return all textbooks before checking out of Burnett. Failure to return textbooks will result in replacement billing and non-transfer of school records. 8 TECHNOLOGY USE All students using any type of electronic device should observe the following technology procedures. These procedures should be used in conjunction with the SJUSD Technology Acceptable Use Policy. Electronic devices include, but are not limited to Desktops, Laptops, Tablets, Calculators, etc. Students must keep private at all times their Student ID, password, and any other login information. Students must work on assigned devices only. If there is a problem with the assigned device, the teacher should be informed immediately. Treat the device with respect; the device will be handled carefully and gently. Students are to only use their fingers while controlling an electronic device. If the device is mobile, it must be held with two hands when moving from any location to another location (for example, moving an ipad from the cart to a desk). All mobile devices must be on a desk or table when in use, unless the teacher has instructed the student to use it another manner. Unless a student has the teacher s permission, he/she is not to touch or adjust any settings on the device. Report to the teacher immediately any damage or problem with a device. Students must be on teacher-selected websites only. Students may only work on a website that is related to their current assignment. No food, drink, or gum is allowed around any device at any time. When using electronic devices, students should follow all login, logout, and shut down procedures. When a student is finished using a mobile device, the device must be returned to its specific assigned location. 9 PHYSICAL EDUCATION All Physical Education classes at Burnett Middle School are co-educational. All students must dress out daily for Physical Education, which includes wearing athletic shoes and A YELLOW SHIRT WITH BLACK SHORTS OR SWEAT PANTS. P.E. uniforms may be purchased at Burnett at the beginning of the school year and until supplies last throughout the school year. Gym lockers are provided so that students may store their P.E. clothing during the week. Every Friday, P.E. uniforms should be taken home and laundered. Students are expected to participate each day in their Physical Education class. If a student cannot dress out or participate, the student must have a written excuse from home or from a doctor. The note should include the student s name, the nature of the illness or injury, and the expected time the student will be inactive. If the student is properly excused, he/she will not lose credit. If he/she is not properly excused, forgets his/her P.E. clothes, or refuses to dress out, he/she will have points deducted from his/her grade. HALL PASSES All students will be issued a total of 6 hall passes per semester, which may be used in any class at the teacher s discretion. The passes are located at the back of this Student Planner. It is the student s responsibility to write their name on each in pen and they will not be replaced if lost. When leaving on a hall pass, students must have an official BURNETT hall pass clipboard to go anywhere during class periods. Students out of class and without signed passes will be returned to class and will receive consequences assigned by an administrator. EDUCACIÓN FISICA Todas las clases de Educación Física en la Escuela Secundaria Burnett son co-educativas. Se espera que estudiantes participen diario en la clase de Educación Física. Si un estudiante no puede uniformarse o participar, el estudiante debe traer una nota escrita de casa o del médico. La nota debe incluir el nombre del alumno, la naturaleza de la enfermedad o herida, y cuanto tiempo se anticipa estará inactivo. Si el estudiante es propiamente justificado, no perderás créditos. Si no es propiamente justificado, olvida el uniforme de E.F., o se rehúsa a uniformarse, se le deducirán puntos de su calificación. PASES DE PASILLO A todos los estudiantes se les entregará un total de 6 pases de pasillo por semestre, que puede ser utilizado en cualquier clase a discreción del maestro. GUM Students are not allowed to chew gum at Burnett. Teachers and administrators will assign appropriate consequences. Spitting or throwing gum will be considered school vandalism. We have a zero tolerance policy for gum. A Saturday School and/or fines will be assigned. CHICLE No se permite que estudiantes masquen chicle en Burnett. 10 DETENTION & SATURDAY SCHOOL Lunchtime detention, after-school detention, or Saturday School may be assigned to students who have unexcused tardiness or absences to school, who have cut a class, or who have behaved inappropriately. If you fail to serve your detention, you will be assigned Saturday School. If you fail to attend Saturday School, you will be assigned on-campus suspension for an entire day. Classroom teachers will assign detention to students who have behaved inappropriately while under the supervision of that teacher. To serve teacher detention, you report directly to that teacher. Teachers must give 24 hours notice for after school detention. Failure to serve will result in further discipline. SUSPENSIONS Any school administrator may issue suspensions from school. Individual teachers may suspend a student from their class for a period, for all of the reasons listed in the San Jose Unified School District Student and Parent Handbook. You will receive this handbook during the first week of school. Please keep it as a reference. Gang-related language, racial slurs, and/or symbols will lead to suspension. Slurs that are related to gangs, race, or sexual orientation will be considered a hate crime and appropriate action will be taken. Students may not attend any after-school activities on the day(s) of their suspension. This includes all extra-curricular or co-curricular activities on any San Jose Unified School District Campus. See individual teachers for their Make-Up Work policy regarding suspensions. FREE DRESS DAYS The following rules apply to Scholar Free Dress Fridays, or any other day in which Free Dress Rules apply: 1. Jeans are permitted 2. Gang-related clothing is not permitted 3. Skirts and shorts must meet uniform length requirements 4. Shirts must have straps or sleeves that are at least 1 inch wide 5. Red/Blue/Sports Logos are permitted on these days ONLY 6. Close-toed shoes are required 7. Students participating in free dress day must wear their bracelet. Students can obtain one bracelet at the student store at lunch or at the office in the morning. Replacement bracelets will not be provided 8. On days in which students are participating in a sports game or musical performance they will be permitted to wear a dress shirt with optional tie DETENCIÓN Y ESCUELA DE SÁBADO Detención durante el almuerzo, detención después de escuela o Escuela de Sábado podría asignarse a estudiantes que tienen retrasos o ausencias a la escuela injustificadas, han cortado clases, o se han comportado indebidamente. Si falla en cumplir la detención, se asignará Escuela de Sábado. Si falla en cumplir la Escuela de Sábado, se asignará una suspensión interna. 11 UNIFORM VIOLATION PROCEDURES The following (progressive) steps will be enforced when a student comes to school with any uniform violation these will be cumulative throughout the entire school year: Step 1: CLASSROOM WARNING & FIX/CHANGE *Teacher will educate the student on proper uniform guidelines *Teacher will call home & send violation form to office Step 2: ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE & FIX/CHANGE *Conference with Administrator *Violation form sent home & parent signature required (if not returned skip to step 3) Step 3: LUNCH DETENTION WITH ADMINISTRATOR & FIX/CHANGE *Student will serve lunch detention *Violation form sent home & parent signature required (if not returned skip to step 4) Step 4: SATURDAY SCHOOL & FIX/CHANGE *Conference with Burnett Administrator * Saturday School *Parent-Administrator conference; next violation results in on-campus suspension for one day Step 5: ON-CAMPUS SUSPENSION & FIX/CHANGE *Conference with Burnett Administrator *Parent-Administrator conference *On-Campus Suspension Any further violations will result in suspension from school and loss of activities/privileges. TELEPHONE & CELLULAR PHONES The Office telephones are for school business and may be used by students only in the case of an emergency and only with permission of a staff member. Calling home for permission to go to a friend's house or to a game after school is not considered an emergency. Student cellular phones must be turned off during school hours (prohibition on ringing and vibrating) and must be kept in the student s purse or backpack at all times during class or while under the supervision and control of school district employees. 12 MONEY, VALUABLES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES Large amounts of money and valuable possessions should not be brought to school. The SJUSD Student Handbook states that electronic devices are not allowed on campus. If it is necessary to bring such items to school, the student should bring them to the Office. School personnel are not responsible for lost, stolen or confiscated items and will not investigate each incident. BICYCLES & SKATEBOARDS Students may ride bicycles and skateboards to and from school. Per CA state law, students must wear a helmet and will not be permitted to leave campus on a bike/skateboard without one. Students riding bicycles must walk their bike on campus then park and lock the bike in the Bicycle Cage. Students must take skateboards to the office upon arrival on campus. Burnett is not responsible for lost or stolen bicycles or skateboards. Students may not ride bicycles and skateboards on campus. Students who do so will be warned and risk having this items confiscated if the behavior continues. FIELD TRIPS Optional field trips, which supplement and enrich the approved curriculum, will be scheduled from time to time. To be eligible to attend, you must follow established guidelines and return the permission notice signed by your parent/guardian. In the event that financial assistance is needed to pay the trip costs, a written request must be submitted to the principal and must include appropriate documentation to verify need. To participate in an overnight trip, each participant MUST show proof of insurance coverage. SCHOLARS In order to qualify as a Burnett Scholar and receive Free Dress every Friday (per grading period), students must receive an IB average grade of 5 (with no 1's or 2's). See IB grading conversion below for more information. Estudiantes tienen que llevar sus patines a la oficina al llegar al plantel. Burnett no es responsable por bicicletas o patines perdidos o robados. Estudiantes no pueden pasear sus bicicletas o patines en el plantel. Estudiantes que lo hagan se les advertirá y arriesgan que estos artículos sean confiscados si esa conducta continúa. VIAJES DE EXCURSIÓN Viajes de excursión opcionales, lo cuales suplementan y enriquecer el plan de estudios aprobado, serán programados de vez en cuando. Para ser elegible y asistir, debe seguir las normas establecidas y regresar la nota de permiso firmada por el padre/tutor. En el caso que sea necesaria la ayuda financiera para pagar los costos, se debe someter una solicitud por escrito a la dirección y debe incluir la documentación apropiada para verificar la necesidad. Para participar en un viaje que requiera pasar la noche, cada participante DEBE mostrar prueba de cobertura de seguro. ERUDITOS Para calificar como un Erudito de Burnett y recibir Vestido Libre todos los viernes (por período de calificaciones), el estudiante debe recibir una calificación promedio de 5 (sin 1s o 2) del IB.
