1 Marching Band/ Symphonic Band Syllabus /5 th period Mr. Pedersen/ Mr. Farrell The Symphonic Band is one of the top performing ensembles at Lanier High School. Students in the Symphonic Band will be required to play difficult repertoire. Students are admitted to this group either by audition or by director's approval, which is based on the student's ability and/or the need for a particular instrument to complete a balance of instrumentation. The Marching Band consists of Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Color Guard. Marching band is a class that meets at the schedule specified on the CHARMS website. The normal weekly schedule for the Marching Band Class is: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 6:00PM 8:00PM ***However, there are a few alterations to this schedule when need arises, i.e. no school on Monday, etc. VERY IMPORTANT attendance is taken at both 0 and 2 nd periods. Students receive a PE credit for 0 period, and a fine arts credit for 2 nd period. While the 0 period class is outside the normal school hours, it is an AISD scheduled class. Absences or tardies to this class hold the same weight as they do for any other class.

2 Students in this group have the following requirements: a) Be a member of the Marching Band, including fulfilling ALL the requirements of the Marching Band b) Prepare and Perform for Winter Concert c) Participate for a daily grade d) Attend all rehearsals and performances associated with each group e) Submit recordings as assigned f) Stay informed of upcoming events through the CHARMS website. (charmsoffice.com, school code is lanierhsband). g) Submit the fair share ($100 total. $50 the first month, $10 each month afterward) h) Attend the spring band trip, either by paying for the trip, or fundraising for the travel cost i) Have the proper attire for performances a. GUYSi. Marching season black marching shoes (purchased from Lanier Band), black socks, khaki shorts (purchased from Lanier Band), black belt, band polo shirt (purchased from Lanier Band). ii. Concert Season Black dress shoes (may use Marching shoes), black socks, black pants, white, long sleeve button down shirt, black belt, black bow tie. ALL PROVIDED BY STUDENT b. GIRLSi. Marching season SAME AS GUYS ii. Concert Season Black flats (provided by student), Lanier HS concert dresses (provided by Lanier Band) Objective: The goal of this class is to cultivate in each student a lifelong love of music while continually raising the standards of excellence through common goals, unified efforts, mutual respect, and a tradition of success through mastering content laid out in the TEKS.

3 Grading Policy: Marching Band Participation (100%) Symphonic Band Participation includes attendance at all classes (100 for on time, 50 for unexcused tardy, 0 for unexcused absence) and all performances. Students who miss a rehearsal are not permitted to attend the football game that week. Participation (50%) Tests (50%) Participation includes attendance at all classes (100 for on time, 50 for unexcused tardy, 0 for unexcused absence) and all performances. Tests include playing tests, written tests, and submitted recordings.
