Simple Past, Past Progressive, Comparisons Elaborado por: MTE Isabel Alfaro Flores, LLE Noviembre,
SIMPLE PAST
La forma afirmativa El verbo to be en pasado simple tiene dos formas: was y were. De forma afirmativa, no hay respuesta corta. I was You were Affirmative He/She/It was at home yesterday I was on holiday in June We / You / They were They were really interested in your project
La forma negativa Negative Full form I was not You were not He / She / It was not We were not You were not Theye were not Short form I wasn t You weren t He / She / It wasn t We weren t You weren t They weren t at home yesterday La estructura completa es: Sujeto + was/were + not y la contraída es: Sujeto + wasn t/weren t. Por ejemplo: The weather wasn t very good yesterday. / We weren t ready yet
La forma interrogativa y respuestas Las preguntas con el verbo be en pasado simple se forma utilizando was/were + sujeto (sustantivo o pronombre), por ejemplo: Was it a good match? / Were your parents happy with your exam results? La respuestas cortas se forman con Yes/No + Pronombre Sujeto + was/were/wasn t/weren t. Por ejemplo: Were you on the phone? Yes, I was. I was speaking to Jo. Interrogative Answers Was I Were you Was he / she / it Were we Were you Were they at home yesterday? Yes, you were / No, you weren t Yes, I was / No, I wasn t Yes, he/she/it was No, he/she/it wasn t Yes, we were / No, we weren t Yes, we were / No, we weren t Yes, they were / No, they weren t
I received an from my brother this morning They went to the seaside last summer Affirmative (regular verb) I / You / He / She / It / We / They worked all day yesterday Affirmative (irregular verb) I / You / He / She / It / We / They came back late last night
I didn t like the film We didn t take the bus, we went by taxi
Did you take any photos of the baby? Did the plane land on time? En las preguntas negativas, el auxiliar didn t va antes del sujeto Didn t you know the answer? Las respuestas cortas se forman con Yes/No, + pronombre sujeto + did/didn t Did you sleep well? Yes, I did Did they buy any souvenirs? No, they didn t
PAST PROGRESSIVE
I was watching TV when she called What were you doing when the earthquake started? She was always coming to class late He was constantly talking, he annoyed everyone
Para qué se utiliza? El pasado continuo o progresivo se utiliza para : Para hablar de dos acciones que se realizan simultáneamente en el pasado I was studying while he was making dinner Thomas wasn t working while you were watching TV While vs. When Cuando se utiliza when en el pasado, éste debe ser Pasado Simple, pero cuando se utiliza while el pasado debe ser Continuo ya que expresa la idea durante este tiempo. Observa los siguientes ejemplos, tienen significados similares pero enfatizan diferentes partes de la oración: I was studying when she called / While I was studying, she called
Cómo se forma? El pasado progresivo se forma con sujeto + el verbo to be en pasado + el verbo en cuestión en la forma ing (presente participio) You were studying when she called Were you studying when she called? You were not studying when she called
Cuando utilizamos adverbios Para los tiempos continuos o progresivos se pueden utilizar adverbios como always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc., pero se no debe olvidar que deben colocarse antes del verbo con - ing, por ejemplo: You were just studying when she called Were you just studying when she called?
COMPARISONS
Uso de la preposición Para hacer comparaciones utilizamos la preposición than Luke is taller than his brother This test is more difficult than the other one Than puede ser usado como conjunción para presentar una frase comparativa This test is more difficult than I thought The hotel was more comfortable than we expected Si la segunda parte de la comparación incluye un pronombre se utiliza normalmente un pronombre objeto (me, him ). My sister is taller than me. / My sister is taller than I am. They are more organised than us. / They are more organised that we are.
Uso de adverbios al comparar Antes de los adjetivos comparativos también es posible utilizar much, far, a lot, a little, a bit o slightly. Mark es a far nicer guy than Jeff. Today sd lesson was slightly more interesting that yesterday s. Your house is much larger than ours
La igualdad en las comparaciones Para decir que personas, cosas, etc. son iguales de alguna manera, se utiliza la estructura as+adjetivo+as, algunas veces el primer as se enfatiza utilizando el adverbio just: She s just as beautiful as her sister The flat where I live now is about as big as the one where I lived before Para la forma negativa solo se le antepone la partícula not They were both very well dressed, but he wasn t as elegant as his brother El primer as puede ser sustituído por la partícula so This road isn t so bendy as the other one The supermarket isn t so crowded today as it was yesterday
Cuando hay desigualdad Para hablar de desigualdad podemos utilizar el adverbio less, el cual debe ir ubicado antes del adjetivo: less+adjetivo+than The weather today is less humid than (it was) yesterday Grown-ups are usually less adventurous than teenagers Es importante mencionar que esta comparación es menos usada a que si utilizas el adjetivo con significado contrario, por ejemplo: The sales are on. Everything is less expensive than it was. The sales are on. Everything is cheaper than it was.
Casos particulares de comparación Incremento gradual comparativo + and + comparativo It s getting darker and darker The book I m reading is getting more and more gripping Incremento paralelo the + comparative the + comparative The heavier your luggage is, the more expensive the transport gets The greater the challenge, the greater the reward Entre dos cosas o personas the + comparative + of I ll buy the larger of the two pullovers En este ejemplo se están comparando dos elementos, sin embargo si se comparan mas de dos deberá utilizarse la forma superlativa Para comparar dos acciones la primera debe ir en infinitivo y la segunda en la forma base Sometimes it s quicker to cycle than go by bus
Adjetivos y adverbios irregulares Algunos adjetivos y adverbios tienen formas comparativas y superlativas irregulares: Adjective Adverb Comparative Superlative good well better the best bad badly worse the worst far farther/further the farthest/the furthest old older/elder the oldest/the eldest late later the latest/the last much/many more the most little less the least York is farther/further from here than Newcastle North Cape is the furthest northern point in the European continent John is my elder brother / My sister is the eldest
