6 COURSE DESCRIPTION Objectives of Course This is a continuation of SPA 201, and continues to introduce more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary, which aids in the development of intermediate communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. An appreciation and understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures continues through the introduction and study of Spanish literature. Student Learning Outcomes 1. Write essays in Spanish that reflect the culture and history of the Spanish Renaissance "El Siglo de Oro." 2. Demonstrate oral fluency in the target language at the intermediate-mid level using the vocabulary, grammar, and literature presented in the list of topics for this course. 3. Identify, explain, and dramatize historical and cultural influences in Spanish literature by means of class discussions and written compositions. 4. Read and discuss authentic Spanish literature at the intermediate-mid level. Text & Books Required: Dos novelas picarescas: El Lazarillo de Tormes. Tardy (1996). National Textbook Co. ISBN Recommended: Puntos de partida, McGraw Hill, 9 th edition, 2012, ISBN The 8 th edition is acceptable and the 7 th edition is fine too. Spanish-English/English-Spanish Dictionary Dictionary of 501 Verbs Workbook and laboratory manual to accompany the textbook are optional you can get free copies of the listening CDs that go with the lab manual from our library. Complete the attached form at the end of this packet. Grading: Login to your Passport site to view your grades. Tests 60% Class Participation 10% Homework 10% Oral Presentation 10% Pronoun Packet 10% Grades are posted weekly in Passport under our class site. Check your grade on a weekly basis. If there is an error in your grade, please notify the instructor as soon as possible. Grading philosophy: if you just answer a question or assignment with a short answer, the grade will be a "C." To receive a "B" the answer must be very complete, full sentences, well written. A grade of an "A" is given to assignments that are truly above what is required, give extra information, include your opinion, show that your deserve an outstanding grade on the assignment. A = %; B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D = 60-69%; F = below 60% 6

7 Late Work Policy All work is due on the date indicated on the course syllabus during the scheduled class meeting time. Late work will be marked down 5% for each day (includes weekdays and weekends) that the work is turned in after the due date. After two weeks have passed, the work will no longer be accepted and the grade will remain a zero. Early work is always accepted. Assignments may be ed to Nancy at barclay@ltcc.edu. Work that is completed or turned in on the due date, but after the class has met for the day will be counted as one day late with a reduction of 5%. This late work policy applies to all graded work in this course. If you have a serious emergency, please see the instructor to make special arrangements. El Lazarillo de Tormes An intermediate version of the novel El Lazarillo de Tormes will be studied this quarter as part of an overview of Spain s Golden Century. The novel read in class consists of 15 episodes. Each episode will be read in class as time permits. An ongoing homework assignment is to read and reread each episode many times. There is an English translation of our version available online at: This translation is to help students with comprehension and to eliminate the need to use a dictionary to look up every word in the novel. Students are responsible for reading the novel and should be prepared to discuss the assigned episode in class. Class Participation Class participation is an important part of the grade. Ten points will be given for each class meeting. Students are automatically excused from two (2) class meetings. If absent the student is responsible for making up all work according to the class syllabus and the late work policy. Five (5) points will be deducted if when students leave early or come to class late. Oral activities will be part of class participation. Students will speak Spanish during the activities and total participation points will depend on the involvement and use of Spanish in class. Homework Homework assignments are on the course syllabus with the due dates. Students should plan to spend ten hours a week studying vocabulary and grammar from the text, as well as reading the assigned pages from the novel El Lazarillo de Tormes. Homework includes practicing speaking Spanish with native speakers. All material on the course syllabus should be studied at home as well. An ongoing homework assignment is rereading the assigned chapters in El Lazarillo de Tormes that have been read in class. There will not be time in class to read the entire work. Therefore, it is expected that students will complete the readings at home and be prepared for quizzes on the assigned chapters. 7

8 Oral Presentations Each group will reenact a scene from El Lazarillo de Tormes. See the attached handout for details. This project is worth 10% of the quarter grade. Pronoun Packet A pronoun packet will be provided for each student. Sections will include: subject pronouns, reflexive pronouns, direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, prepositional pronouns.. The completed pronoun packet will be collected and graded once all pronouns have been covered in class. See the syllabus for the due date. This project is worth 10% of the quarter grade. Keeping up with the Class Any student needing accommodations should notify the instructor. Students who are having difficulty should notify the instructor as soon as possible. Tutoring in the Tutoring & Learning Center (TLC) FREE! Tutorial services are provided at no cost to the student. The schedule of Spanish tutors is available in the TLC, room A201. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Students requiring accommodations for a certifiable disability that may affect class performance, are requested to schedule an appointment to discuss this during the first week of the quarter so that appropriate arrangements can be make. Disability Resource Center (DRC) is located in room A205, and provides support for students with learning, psychological, hearing, visual and communication disabilities, as well as health disorders and mobility limitations. Dropping the Class Students are responsible for dropping the class. See Admissions & Records for clarification and deadlines. LTCC Library The library has many resources available for students. Feel free to contact a librarian for information. They are there to help you. 8

9 EL LAZARILLO DE TORMES Oral Presentations Reenact an episode from the novel, or create a new episode. Write a script with your group. Practice your lines. If you read your lines, the highest grade possible on the presentation will be a "C." The goal is to speak Spanish, not read it. Each group must turn in one copy of the script before the presentation. Visuals, costumes, props must be used! Be creative. Time: presentations should last between 10 and 15 minutes. (Individual presentations - 5 minutes) Groups will be formed in class. Some class time for practice will be given in class. If you are not able to work with a group, you may do an individual presentation, such as a commentary or speech by a character from the novel. Make sure that you will have time to practice outside of class. Exchange phone numbers with members of your group. Plan a time to practice. If members of your group are absent the day of the presentations, the show will go on. We will have a volunteer read the lines of the person who is absent, so the script is very important. Each participant of your group should have equal speaking parts, don't let one person dominate the scene. It's okay to change the scene a bit from the original to accommodate your needs. If you are absent, you may present your part in the next class meeting, with a reduction of 10% for your grade. Grading Written script Use of Spanish fluency and correct grammar Say your lines, don't read them Effort Pronunciation Visuals, costumes, preparation Time of presentation(10-15 minutes) 10 points 30 points 10 points 10 points 30 points 10 points Keep it fun and creative! 9
