Nouns Sustantivos por Blanca Rosa González Noun: is the kind of word that can be the subject by itself. We can identify the noun from a sentence asking the question What are we taking about? or about whom we are speaking?
computadoras Figura 3 computer Figura 4 computers árboles Figura 5 tree trees Figura 6 Tabla 1. Plural nouns (Murphy, 1990) Si el sustantivo termina en _s, _ss, _sh, _ch, entonces se agrega la terminación _es al final para formar el plural. autobuses Figura 7 bus Figura 8 buses vasos o copas Figura 9 glass Figura 10 glasses 2
deseos Figura 11 wish Figura 12 wishes iglesias Figura 13 church Figura 14 churches Tabla 2. Nouns with similar sounds Si el sustantivo termina en una consonante seguida de _y, entonces se cambia la y por i la terminación _es al final para formar el plural. y se agrega bebés Figura 15 Figura 16 baby babies party parties fiestas contry countries paises factory factories fábricas Tabla 3. Exceptions nouns with y (Murphy, 1990) 3
Nouns with f and fe (Murphy 1990 p.120) 4
Existen algunos sustantivos irregulares que no siguen ninguna regla para formar el plural. hombre /hombres Figura 21 a man Figura 22 men mujer / mujeres Figura 23 a woman Figura 24 women niño(a) /niños(as) Figura 25 a child Figura 26 children persona / gente Figura 27 a person Figura 28 people 5
pie / pies Figura 29 a foot Figura 30 feet diente / dientes a tooth Figura 31 Figura 32 teeth ratón / ratones Figura 33 a mouse Figura 34 mice oveja / ovejas Figura 35 a ship Figura 36 sheep Table 6. Irregular Plurals (Soars, & Soars, 2001.) Los sustantivos plurales se colocan después de las siguientes palabras Plural nouns are located after Al referirse a un sustantivo en plural tenemos las siguientes opciones de palabras para nombrarlos: 6
two (dos), three (tres) many (muchos, muchas) some (unos, unas) a lot of (bastantes, demasiados) plural nouns Figura 37. Fórmula para nombrar sustantivos plurales dentro de una oración (Eastwood, 1992, p. 132) He has two cats El tiene dos gatos Figura 38 I have many friends Yo tengo muchos amigos. Figura 39 She has some books Ella tiene algunos libros Figura 40 The zoo has a lot of animals El zoológico tiene demasiados animales Figura 41 7
I see two men at the beach Yo veo dos hombres en la playa Figura 42 I talk with two women at the restaurant Yo platico con dos mujeres en el restaurante Figura 43 I find many children at the school. Yo encuentro muchos niños en la escuela. She meets some people at the university. Ella conoce unas personas en la universidad. The dentist fixes many teeth. El dentista arregla muchos dientes. My mother found a lot of mice in the kitchen. My mamá encontró bastantes ratones dentro de la cocina. The farmer feeds many sheep.
Figura 44 She has a big house Ella tiene una gran casa. Figura 45 My sister has a cat Mi hermana tiene un gato Figura 46 It s a flower bee zoo candy tree cat game team country university Eso es una flor Eso es una abeja Eso es un zoológico Eso es un dulce Eso es un árbol Eso es un gato Eso es un juego Eso es un equipo (de gente) Eso es un país Eso es una universidad Tabla 7. The indefinite article a (Soars & Soars,2001). 9
Observa que It is = It s y se utiliza para referirse a cosas o animales, pero nunca a personas. Se utiliza an, si el sustantivo empieza con sonido de una vocal. It an apple english dictionary ocean hour umbrela Eso es una manzana Eso es un diccionario de ingles Eso es un océano Eso es una hora Eso es un paraguas Tabla 8. The indefinite article an (Soars & Soars,2001). Existen algunas palabras que aunque de manera escrita empiezan con una vocal, su pronunciación inicia con el sonido de cómo se escucha el pronombre personal you, por lo que será necesario utilizar a. It s a university uniform unique painting Eso es una universidad Eso es un uniforme Eso es una única pintura Tabla 9. The indefinite article a with consonant sounds (Soars & Soars,2001). Referencias Murphy, R. (1990) Essential Grammar in Use a self-study reference and practice book for elementary students of English. New York: Cambridge University Press. Soars, L. & Soars, J. (2001) American Headway student Book1. New York: Oxford University Press
El artículo indefinido an, se utiliza antes de los sustantivos cuyo sonido inicial. sonido consonante. This is an elephant.
Artículo Indefinido a / an El artículo indefinido a /an, significa un / una. Sólo se utiliza antes de los sustantivos singulares. El artículo indefinido a, se utiliza antes de los sustantivos cuyo sonido
