2 Introduction The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) was founded more than 100 years ago by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst when women in the United States did not have the right to vote and social activism was not popular. However, they believed mothers would support their mission to eliminate threats that endangered children, and in early 1897, they started a nationwide campaign that led to the creation of the PTA. Today, the PTA is made up local chapters and is one of the largest volunteer child advocacy organizations in the country. Each local PTA runs independently and is made up of parents who volunteer their time to support their local school. Our Purpose Our local PTA at Oak Terrace Elementary School is made up parents who volunteer to help the school raise money and support the school administration. All the money raised goes towards programs, activities and events that support children enrolled at Oak Terrace. Each year we ask parents to help us organize and support these activities. The PTA also works closely with the principal, administration, and teachers to keep abreast of what is happening in North Shore School District 112 (also referred to as NSSD 112). Programs & Activities Throughout the year, the PTA hosts a variety of events and activities to raise money, have fun and bring the community together. Some activities run once a year, while others occur periodically. We help coordinate Picture Day, the annual yearbook, staff appreciation, the mother-daughter tea, the 5th grade mixer, family nights out, family reading night, and more. After School Kids Program (TASK) TASK is an after school kids program that is organized and run by PTA volunteers who hire outside vendors to run fun and educational activities for our children. We offer a wide variety of activities that range from chess to zumba. There is a cost of these activities and they are offered three times a year: fall, winter and spring. COMMUNICATION Buzz Book Directory The Buzz Book is a telephone and directory that includes teacher, parent and children contact information. It is organized by classroom so that parents can easily find a classmate s contact information. The information is ONLY used as an Oak Terrace resource to help families reach one another. For more information, please contact Missy Feldman at missyfeldman@gmail. com. Currently the Buzz Book is available in hard copy only, but we are working toward a digital format for the school year. Room Parents This year we will be launching an initiative to help coordinate and support teachers with extracurricular types of activities like field trips, field days, holiday parties and more. 3 BUY, LEARN & EARN The Scholastic Book Fair During the school year, the PTA hosts a book fair in the fall and in the spring. The fair is held in the school library. Scholastic is the largest publisher and distributor of children s books in the world. Books are available in both English and Spanish. Oak Terrace earns Scholastic Dollars for our teachers who can than buy books for use in our school s classrooms. During the fair there is also a Family Reading Night. Box Tops 4 Education Box Tops 4 Education is a program run by consumer product companies like General Mills and Ziploc. The program earns cash for the PTA. Parents buy products, clip the tops and send them to the school. Each Box Top has a value of $0.10 for our school. So, the more tops that are collected from students, the more money the PTA earns. School Supplies In the spring, we hold a fundraiser where you can buy your school supplies for the following school year. Proceeds go towards the PTA. EAT, RUN & PLAY Fun Fair One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Fun Fair. The community has the opportunity to join together to play carnival games, enter into a teacher raffle, torture their teachers and have all around Fun Fair fun. District 112 Education Foundation Fun(d) Run and Family Walk The Foundation partners with our PTA and the District 112 Administrative Team to organize the race. All proceeds from the Fun(d) Run benefit the Scholarship Fund for District 112 students. These scholarship funds are used to subsidize student participation in extracurricular enrichment activities including band and orchestra, outdoor education, field trips, and after school clubs across the district. Last year s race raised over $29,000 for students in need and 1400 participants registered. This year s Fun(d) Run is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2015, at the Ravinia Festival grounds where the race will begin at 8:00 a.m. The race concludes with post race activities for all ages. 4 Girls on the Run Girls on the Run is a nationwide program open to girls in third grade and up. The program was developed to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Dine-Out with OT Throughout the year, the PTA hosts dine-outs where OT families gather and eat together at a local restaurant like Buffo s or Tacos el Norte. A percentage of purchases is matched by the restaurant that host our families. The money raised goes towards TASK scholarships. For more information, please contact Missy Feldman at Missyfeldman@gmail.com. School Snack Every Friday after school, the PTA sells snacks. Each snack is $1. The proceeds benefit the PTA. SHOP & SUPPORT Reusable Bags & Spirit Wear Throughout the year, we provide fundraisers for parents and kids alike to purchase t-shirts, hats and reusable bags that show your OT pride and support. Gift Wrap & Gift Cards Together they re a beautiful way to get your holiday and party shopping done We typically make this available right before the holiday season, when parents buy a variety of gift cards and wrapping paper. Target, e-scrip & Community 4 Unity Every time you use a Target debit or credit card we earn money for our PTA! To sign up for a card, please visit your local Target. Once you have signed up for your Target card, or if you already have one, go to target.com/tcoe and sign up to help OT. 1% of all credit/debit card purchases will come back to our school. It s a fast and easy way to earn for our school. Any questions ask Missy Feldman at missyfeldman@gmail.com. Likewise, we also offer two online shopping options that earn money. E-Scrip is an online mall where you can shop your favorite stores like Amazon and Macy s and earn money for the school. More than $400 million has been earned by local schools and nonprofits who use Escrip. It s free to use and easy to set up. 5 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How can I get involved with the PTA? It s super easy. We recommend visiting oakterracepta.org to check out our calendar of activities that you can download or print out. We recommend that you sign up to volunteer or simply us oakterracepta1@gmail.com. Do volunteers need to be a member of the PTA? No, volunteers do not have to be a member of the PTA. Do volunteers need to pay a fee to participate? No, volunteers do not have to pay a fee. Is there a required amount of time that volunteers are required to provide? No, it s entirely up to you to decide how and where you would like to participate. Do volunteers have to speak English? No, they do not. Where and when does the PTA meet? The PTA meets once a month in the Oak Terrace library on the 2nd floor usually in the evenings on a weekday. Always check the OakterracePTA.org calendar online. Who can attend the PTA meetings? Any parent or guardian with a child enrolled at the school. Is the PTA part of the government? No, the PTA is an independent, nonprofit organization and is not affiliated with the US government. Who runs the Oak Terrace PTA? Our PTA is made up of an executive council of Oak Terrace parents. All positions are unpaid and are voluntary. Elections are held every year. One may be nominated by another individual or one may nominate him/herself for a position. Elections are held during the April general PTA meeting, and the newly elected board takes over in May.

About Oak Terrace Elementary School Oak Terrace Elementary has been a landmark in Highwood since The current building was constructed in 2001 and is designed in prairie style influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. The school is consistently recognized as leader in dual language learning. We are the 1st and only school to be running a dual language MyPath pilot. 9 Carrera y Caminata Familiar de la Fundacion Educacional del Distrito #112 La Fundación colabora con la PTA y el Equipo Administrativo del Distrito 112 para organizar una carrera. Todas las ganancias benefician del Fondo de Becas para los estudiantes del Distrito 112. Estos fondos son becas que se utilizan para subvencionar la participación estudiantil en actividades de enriquecimiento extracurricular incluyendo banda y orquesta, educación al aire libre, viajes de campo, y clubes escolares de todo el distrito. La carrera del año pasado recaudó más de $ para los estudiantes que lo necesitan y participantes se registraron.
