1 CIEE Santiago, Chile Course Title: Beginning Spanish / Español Nivel Principiante Course code: SPAN 1001 SACH Program: Santiago Business and Culture Program Language of Instruction: Spanish Credits: 4 Contact hours: 60 Semester : Spring 2018 Course description: This course, throughout teaching Spanish as a second language, explores features of the culture in which the students will be immersed during their stay in the country. Complementing this experience, contents will be reviewed which will enable students to enrich their vocabulary of Chilean Spanish and improve each one of the skills in the target language. Objectives by skill: Listening: Students will be able to comprehend main ideas when the speech is clear, normal and related to everyday life topics in contexts such as university, internship places and free time activities. In addition, students will be able to understand the main ideas from TV or radio shows about current affairs, academic or professional topics from their interest, as long as the speech is articulate and the pace is relatively slow. Speaking: Students will participate spontaneously in conversations about topics related to their lives and personal interests. Writing: Students will be able to write simple texts about familiar topics, such as letters describing personal experiences and opinions. Spanish from Chile: Students will be able to recognize the main aspects of Chilean phonetics and lexis, together with conjugation and contexts where Chilean "voseo" is used. Vocabulary: Students will be able to improve their vocabulary in formal and informal Spanish in diverse contexts of their everyday life. 1

2 Methodology: There will be 23 face to face sessions and 3 site visits. Each session will cover aspects of the Chilean culture, general grammatical and lexical contents of Spanish language. At the same time, attention will be paid to phonetic and specific lexis of Chilean Spanish. Students will be exposed to material such as short clips, movies, recordings, dialogues with an emphasis on students participation. Site visits will be related to contents studied in face to face sessions. Assessment: 1) Oral presentations There will be 2 presentations during the semester. The first on is a 5 minute presentation about general aspects of the Chilean culture. The second 5 minute presentation will be about a song in spanish language, selected by the student. 2) Written tests: these tests will assess grammar contents. 3) Essay writing: there will be an essay of 800 to 1200 words. 4) Class participation: attendance, homework and participation in class discussions. Assessment detail: Presentation Nº 1 10% Presentation Nº 2 10% Essay 20% Test Nº 1 15% Test Nº 2 15% Test Nº 3 (global) 20% Class participation 10% 5) Requirements to pass this class Students must submit all pieces of homework and tasks assigned during the semester and attend to all evaluations. In case of missing a date, the professor should be informed formally about the situation. 80% of attendance is a must in order to pass this class. 2
