1 Did You Get It? Presentación de vocabulario Level 3 pp AVANZA! Goal: Talking about people and places Learn new words to talk about people and places. Then practice what you learned by describing a neighborhood. You can find many different types of shops in a Spanish neighborhood. People in Spain don t often go to large grocery stores. They prefer to shop at specialty shops that sell one or two kinds of products. Here are a few of these shops: la pastelería (pastry shop) la florería (fl ower shop) la bombonería (candy store) la lechería (dairy store) la frutería (fruit stand) la carnicería (butcher s shop) la verdulería (vegetable stand) la ferretería (hardware store) Many people like to do errands (hacer los mandados) early in the morning. They often walk to shops in the neighborhood to get what they need. When they go to other areas to shop, they either take a bus or go to the subway station (la estación de metro) and take a train. If you want to drop a letter in the mail, look around for the mailbox (el buzón) or the post office (el correo). Oh, and if you run out of money, stop by an ATM (un cajero automático) and get some more cash! If time allows, you can take a walk (dar una vuelta) through the neighborhood, go out to eat (ir de tapas), or look at display windows (los escaparates). When you get tired, you can sit on bench (un banco) and relax by a fountain (una fuente). Many people in Spain live in apartments (pisos) that are not very large. Let s say you want to visit someone. First, you ll need to ring the bell (tocar el timbre) from the entrance (la entrada) downstairs and wait to be let in. Some dwellings have terraces (terrazas) and some have balconies (balcones). People like to take advantage of (aprovechar) these features to sit and watch the goings on of their block (manzana). Like people everywhere, Spaniards like to find out everything (enterarse de todo)! Spanish homes are like all others. In the kitchen is the oven (el horno), and in the bathroom are the shower (la ducha), the bathtub (la bañera), the bathroom sink (el lavabo), and the faucet (el grifo). By the way, if you re visiting someone, be careful not to break (romper) anything or to dirty (ensuciar) their home. If you happen to mess up (desordenar) something up, or cause anything to get broken (roto), you may make yourself available (ofrecerte a) to repair it (arreglarlo). 12 Did You Get It? Presentación de vocabulario Level 3 pp UNIDAD 6 Lección 2 AVANZA! Goal: Describing an excursion Learn new vocabulary to describe an excursion. Then practice what you learned by talking about real or imagined trips. If you ever visit Spain, you might consider some sightseeing by train. After you decide where you want to go and the route (la ruta), you go to the ticket window (la taquilla) at the train station to buy a ticket. Be sure to ask for a window seat (una ventanilla) so that you can enjoy the landscape (el paisaje) as you travel. Your ticket will contain necessary information, such the platform (el andén) and the number of the track (la vía) and the car (el vagón). Once on the train, you ll be free to walk up and down the aisles (los pasillos) or go to the refreshment car to drink something (tomar algo). You can do this without having to miss the view (perder la vista) of the places you pass. And remember, the conductor (el conductor) is always there to help! In addition (Además), at every station there is a waiting room (sala de espera) where you can enjoy refreshments. If you don t like the train, another option is to take a guided tour (hacer una visita guiada). This ensures that you will get to explore (explorar) the best places and, while you re there, why not try the specialties (probar las especialidades) of the region s foods? Most Spanish cities have small historical centers (centros históricos), so you ll be able to wind your way through the alleys (los callejones) on foot and enjoy the walls (las murallas), bridges (puentes), rivers (ríos), and fortresses (fortalezas) that the cities have to offer. Another advantage of a guided tour is that you won t have to study or analyze (analizar) the abundant information usually found in a traveler s guide trying to find just the right places to visit. Your tour guide will know all of them! And because your guide will probably take you to the sites in chronological order (en orden cronológico), you won t miss a thing. And you won t have to ask for directions (pedir direcciones) or run the risk of getting lost (perderse). Depending on where you go, some places will be quiet (callados); others noisy (ruidosos). But they will all be interesting! In conclusion (En conclusión), have a great time, and remember to get a Eurorail Youth Pass. It will allow you to travel throughout Spain and most of the rest of Europe. Well (Pues), with a deal like this you can t afford not to take the train. Hurry, though, because the pass is available only to those under 26! 12 Unidad 6, Lección 2
