GENERAL INFORMATION: Prerequisite: Spanish 612, 312L, or the equivalent. III. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The objective of this course is to provide students with an advanced proficiency in the Spanish language, as well as to develop their ability to think and write critically and analytically. The course is designed to give students an intensive practice at the advanced level in the interrelated skills of reading, writing and speaking Spanish. Spanish 327G offers an in-depth study of the typically problematic aspects of Spanish grammar for English speakers, vocabulary building through a combination of discussion and exercises intended to enhance their grammatical competence in writing and speaking. Course work is organized around a series of topics deemed essential for advanced students of Spanish. Homework assignments are to be presented the following class day or as otherwise stated. All instruction, in-class activities, readings and assignments are in Spanish. IV. GRADING: Exams, 50%; compositions, 30%; homework 10%; attendance and participation, 10%

Semana II Lun 29 ago Repaso y discusión de sec. 1.3 y 1.4, aspectos progresivo y perfectivo. Ejercicio individual (EI) 5,. reconocer tiempos y aspectos de formas verbales. Para el miércoles, Sec contraste entre pretérito e imperfecto. Tarea para el miércoles Mie 31 sep Ejercicio guiado (EG) 8, lista de la pág. 32: practicar por subgrupos la distinción entre pretérito e imperfecto de ciertos verbos. Tarea para el viernes: EI 3 Guernica por subgrupos, selección de tiempos y aspectos. Vie 2 sep Presentación de la tarea. EI 4 Macchu Picchu, en clase. Repaso del sistema verbal (tiempos y aspectos). Para el miércoles, Cap. 3.4 a 3.6, el subjuntivo en cláusulas dependientes.. Mie 14 sep Discutir Cap. 3.4 a 3.6. EI 3, Los animales Para el viernes: Cap. 3.7 y 3.8, oraciones condicionales y secuencia de tiempos. Tarea: EI 3, selección de formas verbales, por subgrupos. Vie 16 sep Presentación de la tarea. Cap. 3.7 y 3.8. EG 5, reconocer el modo de las oraciones condicionales explicar los usos. Semana V Lun 19 sep Recapitulación de los Capítulos 1 a 3 en anticipación del primer examen parcial. Tarea para entregar el lunes de la semana que viene: escribir y entregar (de ser posible por correo electrónico en forma de adjunto Word, Vista no) una primera composición de dos páginas, a renglón doble, sobre cualquiera de los temas planteados por alguna(s) de las tres lecturas que inician los capítulos (Denevi, Sor Juana, o Borges). Mie 21 sep Primer examen parcial. Para el viernes: se repartirá una selección narrativa para comentar en clase su uso de tiempos y aspectos.. Vie 23 sep Comentario gramatical en clase sobre un texto de narrativo. Semana VI Lun 26 sep Introducción al Cap. 4, pronombres. Discutir 4.1 y 4.2 (pronombres de sujeto) Para el miércoles, 4.3 a 4.5 (pronombres de objeto directo e indirecto) Mie 28 sep Cap. 4.3 a 4.6. EI 1 clasificación de los pronombres del español. Para el viernes: Cap. 4.7, leísmo, agente/paciente. Tarea: EG 3 sustitución de sintagmas nominales por pronombres. Por subgrupos Vie 30 sep Presentación de la tarea. Cap E4, completar frases con el pronombre adecuado.

4 Semana VII Lun 3 oct Introducción al Capítulo 5, los reflexivos. Discutir 5.1 y 5.2 los pronombres relativos. Para el miércoles, Cap. 5.3 a 5.5. Entregar la primera composición Mie 5 oct 5.3 a 5.5, el se accidental, pasivo, impersonal. EI 4, verbos con o sin reflexivo. Para el viernes: 5.6, varias expresiones impersonales. Tarea: EI 3, crear frases con verbos de cambio de estado (hacerse, convertirse, etc.) en subgrupos Vie 7 oct Presentación de la tarea. Cap. 5.6 EI 5, agregar los reflexivos que falten. Semana VIII Lun 10 oct Introducción al Cap. 6, preposiciones. Discutir las secciones 6.1 y 6.3, las preposiciones básicas y de sentido determinado. Para el miércoles: Sec. 6.4 a 6.7. preposiciones de sentido ambiguo; por y para.. E1, diferencias de significado a causa de la preposición. Tarea: E2, reformulación de frases con preposiciones. Mie 12 oct Presentación de la tarea. EI 9, Las líneas de Nazca : Usos de entre, con, hacia y hasta.y Teotihuacan, usos de desde, bajo y ante. Vie 9: Resumen del capítulo 6. Semana IX Lun 17 oct Recapitulación de los Capítulos 4 a 6 en anticipación del segundo examen parcial. Tarea para entregar el lunes de la semana que viene: escribir y enviar (por correo electrónico en forma de adjunto Word), una segunda composición de dos páginas, a renglón doble, en base a un artículo periodístico sobre alguno de los temas planteados en la Opción B, pag. 160 u otro tema periodístico que utilice expresiones impersonales. Puede utilizar el buscador Google para ver ejemplares de periódicos en español o incluso echar mano de alguna edición de periódicos locales como El Norte o Ahora sí!. Mie 19 oct Segundo examen parcial. Para el viernes: se repartirá una selección periodística para comentar en clase su uso de reflexivos y preposiciones... Vie 21 oct Comentario gramatical en clase sobre un texto periodístico. Semana X Lun 24 oct Introducción al Capitulo 7, oraciones y conjunciones. Discutir 7.1 y 7.2, Coordinación, subordinación, comparación. EI 1, combinar frases mediante conjunciones.. Entregar la segunda composición. Para el miércoles: Cap. 7.3 a 7.5, conjunciones subordinantes, comparativas.. Mie 26 Discutir 7.3 a 7.5. EI 4 combinar frases. Para el viernes: Cap. 7.6, conectores pragmáticos. E1, colocación de adjetivos SEMANA XII Lun 7 nov Recapitulación de los Capítulos 7 y 8 en anticipación del tercer examen parcial. Tarea para entregar el lunes de la semana que viene: escribir entregar (por correo electrónico en forma de adjunto Word), una tercera composición de dos páginas, a renglón doble, sobre un artículo periodístico sobre alguno de los temas propuestos en la Opción B, pag u otro tema social que utilice argumentos comparables. Mie 9 nov Tercer examen parcial. Para el viernes: Capítulo 9, cuestiones estilísticas. Vie 11 nov Cap. 9, cuestiones estilísticas. Secciones 9.1 a 9.3, el uso de diccionarios bilingües y monolingües. Para el lunes: traer a clase su(s) diccionario(s) SEMANA XIII Lun 14 nov Discutir 9.1 y 9.3 con respecto a los diccionarios individuales. Prácticar el uso de diccionarios de los dos tipos. Para el miércoles: 9.4, el gerundio ndo y el ing del inglés. Entregar la tercera composición. Mie 16 nov Discutir 9.4. Repaso de semejanzas y diferencias entre gerundio ndo y el ing del inglés y otros equivalentes. E2. Para el viernes: Cap. 9.5, colocación de adjetivos. Examen Final, el cual se realizará durante la semana del 5 de diciembre en fecha y a la hora indicadas. Recapitulación y evaluación del curso

6 1. Exams: 15% There will be three partial exams and one final exam. The final will cover material studied during the entire session; will be no make-ups except in case of an emergency see section V below. In the event of an emergency, please notify your instructor as soon as possible and present documented evidence of the emergency. The Final Examination for 327G will follow the regular exam schedule. 2. Compositions: 30% Students will write three compositions during class time. Your instructor will give you the format and the requirements. 3. Oral Presentation. 10% Your instructor will give you the format and requirements. 4. Participation& Attendance: 10% Your instructor will keep track of your homework and participation during class time. Attendance. Owing to the structure and nature of the course, regular class attendance and participation are required for successful completion of the material. Students are allowed two absences (note, however, the policy on exams, and compositions). After the second absence, one point will be deducted from the final grade for each absence in excess of two. As stated by the Academic Policies and Procedures of the General Catalog, A student who misses class or other required activities, including examination, for the observance of a religious holy day should inform the instructor as far in advance of the absence as possible, so that arrangements can be made to complete an assignment within a reasonable time after the absence: ( Grading System 3 Partial Exams (10% ea) 30% Final 20% 3 Compositions 30 % (10% each) Oral Presentation 10 % Participation, Homework, 10 % and Attendance

7 100% RULES AND POLICIES: 1. Your must be present in class to turn in work. 2. The exams and quizzes cannot be taken before the designated dates. Makeups are allowed only in cases of emergency. Notify your instructor as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made promptly, and present documented evidence of your excuse. 4. Emergency is defined as: A. Personal serious illness or accident or B. Death, serious illness, or accident in student s immediate family. For other circumstances, consult your instructor. 5. Your instructor will be available to discuss appropriate academic accommodations that you may require as a student with a disability.
