Mt 24:24a Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time This Sunday s readings urge us to persevere in difficulties and not to shrink from obstacles. The readings call to mind the importance of the faith when it is embodied in our everyday actions a faith that lives in real life. We must develop confidence in God as being present and aware of our difficulties, hearing our cries and being ready to intervene if we give him the opportunity to do so. There are so many events in our lives that we would manage better if we really believed that God was with us. By the time that Luke writes his Gospel, some people in his community had begun to lose hope for the return of Christ. Luke reminds them about what Jesus said: Be like servants who await their master s return from a wedding, ready to open their doors immediately when he comes and knocks. You also must be prepared because, at an hour you do not suspect, the Son of Man will come. (Luke 12: 36, 40) Decimo Noveno del Tiempo Ordinario Las lecturas de este Domingo nos indican que debemos de perseverar en tiempos difíciles y no alejarnos de los obstáculos. Las lecturas nos acuerdan de la importancia de nuestra fe en todas nuestras acciones diarias---la fe de nuestra vida diaria. Debemos de tener confianza en Dios y siempre saber que el esta presente para ayudarnos en nuestras dificultades si acudimos a el. Podemos manejar todos los eventos de nuestras vidas si creemos que Dios esta con nosotros. Cuando Lucas escribió este Evangelio muchas de las personas en la comunidad estaban pensando que Cristo no regresara. Lucas le advierte a las personas lo que Jesús había dicho: Sean como personas que esperan que su patrón regrese de la boda para abrirle apenas llegue y golpear a la puerta. Estén también ustedes preparados, porque el Hijo del hombre llegara a la hora que menos esperan. (Lucas 12: 36,40) Dix-neuvième dimanche du temps ordinaire Les deux premières lectures de ce dimanche nous enseignent à tenir bon dans les difficutés, à ne pas lâcher devant les obstacles. Elle nous rappellent l importance d une foi bien incarnée dans le quotidien, une foi vécue dans le temps et dans le concret de la vie. Il faut déveloper la confiance en Dieu, un Dieu présent qui voit nos situations, qui entend nos plaintes et qui peut intervenir si nous lui en laissons l occasion. Combien d événements de notre vie se vivraient mieux si nous croyions réellement que Dieu est avec nous. Au moment où Luc écrit son évangile, quelques-uns dans sa communauté commençait à desespérer de voir le retour du Christ. Ce retard refroidit leur zèle. Luc sent alors le besoin de leur rappeler certaines paroles de Jésus qui disait: Soyez comme des serviteurs qui attendant leur maître à son retour des noces pour lui ouvrir dès quil arrivera et frappera à la porte. Vous aussi, tenez-vous prêts: c est à l heure où vous n y penserez pas que le Fils de l homme viendra. (Luc 12: 36, 40 Jesus said to his disciples: Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

3 HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Thursday, August 15th, is The Feast of the Assumption and a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses are at 7 A. M. in English, 9 A. M. in Spanish, 12 noon in English and 7 P. M. in French and English. THANK YOU, FATHER CASWELL It has been a pleasure having Father Caswell with us again while Monsignor Crimmins is on vacation. We particularly enjoy his homilies, with their comfortable blend of erudition and wit. Last Sunday he brought to us an excerpt from the novel A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean. It deals beautifully with the subjects of time and aging and loss as seen through the eyes of a fly-fisherman: Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. In the previous week s homily, he brought this prayer of St. Teresa to our attention: If we pray, we will believe. If we believe, we will love. If we love, we will serve. SVDPS RETREAT AT ST. GREGORY S On Saturday, September 7th, Father Donald Baker returns to St. Gregory s as guest speaker at the St. Vincent de Paul Society retreat to be held that day. We welcome Father Baker back to the parish he served so memorably. The retreat will run from 9:30 A. M. through the noon Mass at which Father Baker will speak. There will be readings, discussions and lessons throughout the morning in the upper church as well as the basement. WHAT S NEW IN THE NEWS The July 25th issue of Catholic New York contains its usual interesting mix of articles, including a report on Pope Frances visit to Brazil for World Youth Day. Brazil has more Catholics than any other country in the world. I ask permission to come in and spend this week with you, said the Pope. The newspaper also contains the observations of Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who traveled to Brazil for the occasion. Jesus is here, writes Cardinal Dolan, as our youth meet him in the Holy Eucharist, receive his mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, share stories about meeting him in their works of service to the poor, the sick and the struggling. Catholic New York also contains a listing of special Masses and services, exhibits and volunteering opportunities. Copies of the newspaper are always available at the entrances to the church for you to take home and read. RETIRO SVDPS AQUÍ EN SAN GREGORIO Nuestra Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul ofrecerá un retiro espiritual el 7 de Septiembre dirigido por el Padre Donald Baker. Le damos la bienvenida nuevamente al Padre Baker quien sirvió por muchos años aquí en San Gregorio. El retiro comenzara a las 9:30a.m. y terminara con la misa del medio día. Esperamos un día muy memorable de lecturas oraciones y discusiones aquí en nuestra iglesia. Todos están cordialmente invitados. QUE HAY DE NUEVO EN LAS NOTICIAS? La edición del Periódico Catholic New York de Julio 25 contiene como siempre artículos muy interesantes, como también un mensaje del Papa Francisco de su visita a Brasil para la celebración del Día Mundial de Jóvenes. Brasil tiene mas Católicos que cualquier otro país del mundo. Pido permiso para venir y celebrar esta semana con ustedes, dijo el Papa. El periódico también tiene una observación del Cardenal Timothy Dolan quien viajo a Brasil para esta ocasión. Jesús esta aquí, escribe el Cardenal Dolan, cuando nuestros jóvenes se encuentran con el en la Santa Eucaristía, cuando reciben su misericordia en el sacramento de la Reconciliación, cuando los jóvenes comparten sus experiencias de encontrarlo en sus servicios con los pobres, los enfermos y todos los que sufren. El periódico también incluye una lista de las Misas especiales, de todos los servicios ofrecidos y de las exhibiciones como también oportunidad para trabajar como voluntarios. Siempre hay copias del periódico en la entrada al Oeste de la iglesia para las personas que lo desean y los que no reciben copias en sus hogares.

We are heartened be this result, especially on a summer weekend, when church attendance is traditionally lower.
