Los alumnos adquirirán destrezas esenciales en los campos de las ciencias médicas, biológicas, físicas y del comportamiento, así como en los avances científicos más notables, cuya bibliografía está principalmente en inglés y es recomendable traducirla al español. 3. OBJETIVOS ESPECÍFICOS: Lograr el manejo de técnicas y estrategias de traducción en el campo científico-to achieve expertise in techniques and strategies of translation in the scientific field 5. CONTENIDOS 1.- Introduction to the medical and behavioral sciences.- Reading and comprehension of technical terminology usually appearing in scientific literature. 2.- Metalanguage of translation.- Tools of the translator.- Use and misuse of the technical dictionaries.- Cognitive aspects of translation. 3.- Methodology of technical translations.- Problems in the translation of new terms, and in highly specialized articles. Tips for adequate technical translation. 4.- Lexical, syntactical and stylistic difficulties most commonly found in technical translations.- Comparative stylistics in English and Spanish. 5.- The finished product: critical analysis of sample translations.- How to avoid common errors of translation. 6. EVALUACIÓN: CRONOGRAMA DE EVALUACIONES: September 15, October 20, November 17 - Partial tests (10 points)-each Marks reported to Secretary: September 22, October 23, November 20 Final project - 10 points Final test 10 points Date to be determined by Secretary Total: 50 points SCHEDULE OF CLASSES AND LIST OF READINGS: 1.- Introduction to the medical and behavioral sciences Students will be asked to read some scientific papers and to write an abstract to be shared and discussed in class.- Correction of grammar and style will be conducted in class August 17 to Metalanguage of translation September 1 to 17 September 15 PARTIAL TEST (10 POINTS) Test will be reviewed on September 17, and marks will be reported to Secretary on September 22 Scientific papers will be given to students for translation.- A schedule of presentations, with the aid of the power point, will be established. The quality of the translation will be evaluated. 3.- Methodology of technical translations September 22 to October 15 October 20 - PARTIAL TEST (10 POINTS) Test will be reviewed October 22, and marks will be reported to Secretary on October 23 Readings on technical aspects of translation will be given to students 4.- Lexical, syntactical and stylistic difficulties October 20 to November 12 Assignments will be given to students 5.- The finished product November 17 to December 03 5

6 6.- How to avoid common errors in translation December 8 to 11 November 17 - PARTIAL TEST ( technical translations) ( 10 points) Test will be reviewed on November 19, and marks will be reported to Secretary on November 20 DECEMBER, DATE TO BE FIXED BY SECRETARY FINAL TEST ( 10 POINTS) TRANSLATION PROJECT (10 POINTS), TO BE TURNED IN ON DECEMBER 11 METHODOL0GY MAGISTRAL CLASS AND THE PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS THROUGH THEIR ASSIGNMENTS.
