Research on Reading Sixty years ago, children would read for hours. Their powers of concentration developed as naturally as breathing. Good readers became very good readers... The connection between loving to read and doing well in school was no mystery to most students. One Idea, Norman Mailer, January 23, 2005, Parade Magazine 19

Three Different Models for Teaching Letter Formation 1. Teacher writes a letter and gives instructions to children to copy that letter. (Requires 50 presentations for mastery) 2. Teacher writes letter, explaining the contours and shifts, giving verbal guidance. (Requires 10 presentations for mastery) 3. The model is presented. The child identifies the supportive points, analyzing the model himself. (Requires 4 presentations for mastery) (from Zaporozhets and Elkonin, 1971)

Writing TALK IS ESSENTIAL TO WRITING Scaffold writing instruction through writing routines Modeled Writing Teacher demonstrates a think aloud approach. Interactive Writing Teacher and students work together to: discuss a topic; decide on the message; students take turns writing letter by letter, word by word on chart paper. Independent Writing Students write independently in response to literature or class discussions. Power Writing Builds stamina and automaticity in students writing. They write words, then sentences and ideas, in timed segments. - Write all the words you can in one minute. - Look at the picture. Write all you can about it.
