1 Electrocution is still one of the four leading causes of death in construction. There are many steps you can take to avoid electrocution. Let s discuss a few. Keep a safe distance from overhead power lines. You should always stay at least 10 feet away from all power lines no exceptions. The minimum distance is longer for higher voltages. Remember the old construction saying: Look up and live! Make looking up one of the first things that you do before starting any work. Don t get so involved in your work that you fail to pay attention to what is happening and changing around you. Keep in mind that you don t need to physically touch an overhead power line to suffer a fatal shock. Just being too close can be enough for the electricity to arc and kill you. Inspect extension cords and power tools before using them. You can get severely injured if you use an extension cord with damaged insulation that exposes you to live wires. Keep cords away from heat, oil, and sharp edges. Check electrical hand tools for damage. Cracked or damaged cases could expose you to unprotected electrical current. Avoid using electrical tools in damp or wet spaces; if you have to use them, plug into a circuit protected by a GFCI. Use double-insulated tools whenever you can. Use ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). A GFCI is a fast-acting circuit breaker that is designed to protect you from severe and sometimes fatal electric shocks. GFCIs detect ground faults and interrupt (turn off) the flow of Avoid Electric Shock electrical current almost instantly. That fast response protects you by limiting the duration of an electric shock. Receptacles protected by GFCIs can be found on jobsites and in outdoor areas, bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and other locations where damp conditions do, or could, exist. You can use portable GFCIs to add protection to unprotected outlets. Often called GFCI whips, portable GFCIs are commonly built into short extension cords. Keeping a portable GFCI in your toolbox is a great idea. Follow lockout/tagout procedures. To protect against being electrocuted, you must follow your employer s lockout/tagout procedures. Identify all sources of electrical energy for the circuits or equipment to be locked out. Make sure you include backup power supplies like batteries and generators. Notify all personnel that the equipment and circuits are being shut off and locked out. Shut off, disconnect, isolate, and then lock out all energy sources. Test the equipment and circuits to verify they are de-energized. Read and follow the specific LOTO procedure for each circuit, panel, or piece of equipment you work on. Don t let temporary wiring become permanent. Temporary wiring is just that: temporary. Don t use extension cords as permanent or semi-permanent wiring. SAFETY REMINDER Call 811 before digging, excavating, or drilling.
