3 A Letter from Our Cathedral Rector Dear Parishioners, One of the greatest gifts that a pastor can share with his parishioners is the fruit of his own spiritual life. So, here goes... When we go through severe spiritual trials as individual disciples of Jesus Christ and as a Church, the Lord is constantly sending us signs that he is in it with us, if only we have eyes to see and ears to hear (cf. Isa 6:10). In my own priesthood thanks in large part to formal spiritual training and God s unlimited grace and mercy my spiritual perception has become much more sensitive to the presence, grace, mercy and love of Jesus in the very midst of my worst suffering. This became most evident about two months ago. While praying on the first day of a severe extended spiritual trial, I told the Lord, as I sat before him in the tabernacle of our rectory chapel, Please don t take this trial away from me too quickly. I know you are allowing it for the good of my soul, even though I hate the suffering and would rather not experience it. I assure you that, where I was in my spiritual life even three years ago, I would not have been able to pray those words with sincerity. But after having weathered many severe spiritual trials over the past few years, through the grace of God I have learned how to engage in spiritual combat in a way that allows me to recognize the gift of the trial even though, in my human weakness, I hate the actual suffering and desire it to end. So, I wish to share with you some spiritual weapons that are very effective in the spiritual battle, in the hope that you, too, will take up these weapons and experience the same solidarity with Jesus in the midst of your sufferings, that he has invited me to experience in mine. I will do this over the course of several bulletin letters, introducing you to one weapon at a time. This time around I want to tell you about the Novena of Surrender. You can find this amazing prayer online at the link below: Or, you can come to Confession and I will be happy to give you a copy of a beautifully-designed prayer card with this powerful novena. If you think I m using the prayer card as bait to get you to come to Confession...you re right! I have been praying this prayer religiously since I discovered it about eight months ago. Initially, I prayed it as an actual novena and since then, I pray it regularly on an as needed basis resuming the prayer wherever I last left off. This prayer has deepened my love for the Lord and made me more receptive to his love for me. It has also been a great confidence booster when the spiritual storms are raging. 5 HEALING PRAYER Healing Prayer Dates for October are: Oct. 8, Oct.15, Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 If you are in need of healing in body, mind or spirit, please feel welcome to come and let us pray with and for you. The group meets on the above dates at 11:00 a.m. We meet in St. Bridget s Room, just across from the parish office. A courtesy call to Sr. D. at Ext. 121 is requested if you intend to be present. HOMEBOUND APOSTOLATE Next Homebound Apostolate Meeting will be on Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mary Ward Conference Room. Parishioners, if you or any family members are unable to attend Mass due to illness or debility and would like to receive Holy Communion at home, please call the parish office at We are happy to serve you. SSJ Mother s Guild Rosary Park Oct. 5 at 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The first Thursday of the month, the SSJ Mother s Guild hosts a Rosary group in the park that is open to everyone. No matter what walk of life or how far you are on your faith journey, we want you to join us. If you still have little ones at home, they can play while we pray. Not familiar with praying the Rosary? We will teach you and provide extra Rosaries. Feel free to bring a snack to share and to invite friends from outside the school or parish. It is a great occasion to pray and socialize! 8 Queridos feligreses, Una Carta de Nuestro Rector de la Catedral Uno de los mejores regalos que un pastor puede compartir con sus feligreses es el "fruto" de su propia vida espiritual. Pues, ahí va... Cuando pasamos por severas pruebas espirituales como discípulos individuales de Jesucristo y como Iglesia, el Señor constantemente nos envía "signos" de que está con nosotros, si tan solo tuviéramos "ojos para ver y oídos para oír" (ver Isaías 6,10). En mi propio sacerdocio gracias en gran parte al entrenamiento espiritual y la gracia y misericordia ilimitadas de Dios mi percepción espiritual ha llegado a ser mucho más sensible a la presencia, gracia, misericordia y amor de Jesús en medio de mi peor sufrimiento. Esto se hizo muy evidente hace dos meses. Mientras oraba el primer día de una severa y prolongada prueba espiritual, le dije al Señor, mientras yo estaba sentado ante él en el tabernáculo de nuestra capilla rectoral: "Por favor no me quites esta prueba demasiado pronto. Sé que lo estás permitiendo para el bien de mi alma, aunque odio el sufrimiento y prefiero no experimentarlo". Les aseguro que en mi estado espiritual de tres años atrás no habría podido orar esas palabras con sinceridad. Pero después de haber soportado muchas pruebas severas durante los últimos años, por la gracia de Dios he aprendido a entablar combate espiritual de una manera que me permita reconocer el "regalo" de la prueba, aunque, en mi debilidad humana, odio el sufrimiento real y deseo que termine. Por lo tanto, deseo compartir con ustedes algunas armas espirituales que son muy eficaces en la batalla espiritual, con la esperanza de que ustedes también tomen estas armas y experimenten la misma solidaridad con Jesús en medio de sus propios sufrimientos, la solidaridad que Jesús ya me invitó a experimentar. Haré esto en varias cartas en el boletín, presentándoles un arma por vez. Esta vez quiero hablarles acerca de la Novena del Abandono. Pueden encontrar esta increíble oración en el siguiente enlace: He estado rezando esta oración "religiosamente" desde que la descubrí hace unos ocho meses. Al principio, La recé como novena y, desde entonces, la rezo regularmente, "según sea necesario", continuando la oración donde había quedado la última vez. Esta oración ha profundizado mi amor por el Señor y me ha hecho más receptivo a su amor por mí. También ha sido un gran reforzador de la confianza cuando las tormentas espirituales son feroces.
