Border Binational Week Families in Action For, Preventing Obesity and 2011 Data Summary Report The United States-México Border Commission
Border Binational Week 2011 Data Summary Report This 2011 Data Summary Report presents event information from the 8th Annual Border Binational Week (BBHW) celebrated on October 1-7, 2011. Data reported herein was collected from questionnaires provided to all participating partners requesting the identification of activities conducted; persons participating and those served; and the number of key partners involved, among other required data. Over 150 borderwide fairs, fora, training events, and other health promotion and educational activities involving participation from U.S. and Mexican local, state, federal, academic, non-governmental, public, and private partners were achieved in support of BBHW. The goal of BBHW is to promote sustainable partnerships that address border health problems. Intended outcomes include increased community and inter-agency networking relationships, increased information sharing and educational opportunities, and increased awareness of the BHC and other state and local initiatives. During this year s weeklong celebration, the BHC continued to promote awareness of the prevalence, risk factors, and health outcomes of the childhood obesity epidemic on the U.S.-México border through its message of Families in Action for, Preventing Obesity and. The promotion of vaccination for the prevention of influenza and childhood vaccine-preventable diseases, such as pertussis, was also emphasized. To date, BBHW has reached over 1.2 million border residents, and, each year, it continues to generate and strengthen community partnerships whose combined efforts address the unique health issues common to the border region. The health department applied for a grant for the Tdap vaccine from Sanofi and was able to acquire several thousand doses, which are being provided throughout Cochise County to adults free of charge. With the Teen Maze project ( Fair for Teens) at the various high schools and middle schools throughout Cochise County, almost all of the health objectives in prevention are being addressed. Stations include education on -Nutrition, HIV/AIDS/STDs, Behavioral issues, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, and Injury Prevention., objectives on prevention of diabetes and obesity Arizona ADHS Arizona Disparities Center, ADHS Office of Border (OBH) is the lead for promoting and protecting the health of all border area residents. The OBH's projects and initiatives align with several of the HB 2010 focus areas, including, but not limited to, ; Environmental ; and Maternal, Infant, and Child. Furthermore, the ADHS Arizona Disparities Center's mission and vision aligns with HB 2010's two over-arching goals to improve the quality of life for all Arizonans and eliminate health disparities. Substance Abuse SNMDO, this activity addresses one of the HB 2010/2020 objectives related to Mellitus: to reduce both the mortality rate of diabetes and the need for hospitalization. This activity was an outdoor opportunity for citizens to take part in an event that promotes physical activity and, as a result, contributes to a reduced risk for diabetes and a healthier lifestyle for participants. Columbus-Luna County-Palomas Binational, family planning, sexuality education, and teen pregnancy prevention; substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, tobacco) and behavioral and mental health problems, lack of youth activities, and youth suicide; improved immunization rates; improved prenatal care; improved binational epidemiology, surveillance, and control of non-communicable diseases; obesity and diabetes education, glucose screening, and continuity of care. American Association Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, the funding was the exact thing we needed in order to provide the program to this community., continuous work with other organizations and agencies provide a framework, data support, and collaboration opportunities to better the health of our binational communities, providing a platform for future events, projects, and funding. CDPH EWIDS High Tech Middle California Improvement Partners Coalition of Latino AIDS Service Providers Initiative of the Americas, expanded our network. response response MANA de San Diego County of San Diego Queso Fresco Taskforce response EUNIME, Inc. Substance Abuse SNMDO Columbus-Luna County-Palomas Binational State University Nursing Paso del rte Binational Committee of Office of Border Quad Counties on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, there were many new organizations, such as schools, that participated and would like to be involved in next year's activities. One organization offered to assist in the process of converting the manual used in this training to make it scientific evidence based., we worked with the different groups involved with SNMDO to help make this Ciclovia a special one. Each member had a role to play that day, and each person pitched in to help out, making it a successful event., this is the first year Gabe s Fitness participated. Border Partners is relatively new to the Columbus-Luna County-Palomas Binational. As they are an NGO that works in Palomas, they are a valuable addition to our BBHW activities., we were able to formalize our relationship with the two health councils that gave us financial support., at every event, I collected business cards and promoted Go Blue on the Border., we began working with Project Vida and Salud por Vida, two outreach programs that focus on diabetes prevention and management., helped with afternoon sessions., we are maintaining the existing ones. HOPE-K Trinational, formed new partnerships with the University of Texas School of Rural Public (SRPH) in Brownsville, Texas, and the Texas A&M SRPH in McAllen, Texas. The recommendations presented at this conference will be further reviewed during the council meetings., in attendance at this event were professionals from different organizations and agencies that participated, for the first time, during BBHW. They provided direct services to clients. As a result, the community and other agencies are now better informed about the services they provide. As a result, the community and other agencies are now better informed about the services they provide., we are fortunate to have maintained a good relationship with our partners for years., the two participating universities established a new partnership and may be conducting research together in the future., established new partnerships with county officials of Hidalgo County, hospitals, university, business centers, pharmacies, and private health providers., this event allowed us to form a partnership with community volunteers currently working as professionals in the community, but who have decided to volunteer their time in promoting well-being in Del Rio., the BBHW events in Del Rio have served as a gateway for new participation and collaboration on a yearly basis., allowed us to work closely and form new partnerships with county, community clubs, schools, and private vendors, all targeting the fight against diabetes and obesity., the new partners during this year's BBHW 2011 activities included TAMIU Nursing School, Facultad de Enfermeria UAT Nuevo Laredo,, and Sistema DIF Nuevo Laredo,.. Border Forum - the goal of the health research forum was to inform community, state, and federal officials of health disparities common to the border. It was extended not only to students, but also to doctors from the University of Texas-Pan American and Texas A&M School of Rural Public, Cameron County Hispanic Cohort, as well as the University from, the UAT. Fair - the fair was comprised of various partners, such as the Valley Baptist Hospital, Cameron County, and Brownsville Clinic. Immunization, obesity, and diabetes-related education materials were shared with the community. The City of Brownsville Public distributed a flyer with the Walgreens Wellness Tour Bus schedule, which will supply all residents with free health tests at various locations in Brownsville, Texas. The of State Services provided literature via English and Spanish language DVDs and Comic Books entitled More Excuses, I Wish I Had Known, and Mary and the Junk Food Eaters. The Fair also provided free eye screenings as well as osteoporosis and glucose testing. National Immunization Stakeholders Meeting - the goal the meeting was to measure progress, implement innovative solutions to address barriers to immunization, and recognize new opportunities for action. Approximately forty-five officials, representing various states and counties, attended the Border Stakeholders Meeting., allowed us to work closely and formed new partnerships with county, community clubs, schools, and private vendors, all targeting the fight against diabetes and obesity. Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, working towards the same goal, learning from each other, and identifying areas for growth and support among entities. CDPH EWIDS, some partners were not able to attend the One Border One meeting, as they were attending other BBHW events. High Tech Middle California Improvement Partners Coalition of Latino AIDS Service Providers, we have a greater understanding of each other's efforts and can leverage resources. response Initiative of the Americas response MANA de San Diego, it was another way we could reach out to our partners and offer a venue to come together and learn something new while having fun. County of San Diego Queso Fresco Taskforce response Tijuana Border Initiative response American Indian Center, collaborative support received through our partnerships expanded the audience we were able to reach with information regarding 's Low Income (LIHP), a joint federal-state "Bridge to Care Reform" designed to increase access to health care for previously uninsured individuals now eligible for insurance coverage. EUNIME, Inc. Trash Talkers Coalition, the evidence of support from the BHC drew great interest from our participants and their affiliated organizations, the local vendors and other community organizations in attendance at this years' Film Fest 2011. We plan on inviting and hopefully expanding the coalition with some of the potential contacts made from this year's festival.

The Arizona Disparities Center has held community events with the assistance of El Rio, but it had been almost two years since our last event. The BBHW allowed us to reconnect. Campesinos Sin Fronteras, more collaborations were added to the activities. SEAHEC, we are moving into the health education component of healthy farms, which is a new level of partnership. Unexpected logistical challenges have arisen, but as we sort it out, it is bringing our partnerships to the next level of collaboration. Substance Abuse SNMDO Columbus-Luna County-Palomas Binational State University Nursing Paso del rte Binational Committee of Office of Border, planning and implementing the BBHW 2011 Ciclovia was a collaborative process between the partners that make up Dona Ana Action Coalition and SNMDO. Everyone in the group offered assistance and helped coordinate activities., this year we had a little money to help them buy supplies for their events. They seemed more eager to participate this year because they weren t having to totally finance their activities out of their own budgets., we were able to work closely with agencies and funders to put together a very professional and user-friendly booth. The funding support showed the nursing students that their contribution is valuable., we got visibility. They had something to take away. They liked the idea., working together with our partners in the Binational Subcommittee during BBHW 2011 strengthened our organizational capacity and relationship since everyone on the committee was involved in the planning and implementation of the event.
Quad Counties on Alcohol and Drug Abuse HOPE-K Trinational, new departments were involved in this activity., QUAD Counties on Alcohol and Drug Abuse has been an important player in the coordination of activities in the Mid-Texas border. This event further strengthened this partnership through their key collaboration in organizing this successful event., participating organizations from the previous year returned. Servicios de Salud de Coahuila Ciudad Acuña, participating organizations from the previous year returned., working together during BBHW certainly strengthens our partnerships., scholarships for healthcare professionals in Ciudad Juárez,, México., because networking with all our community agencies has helped us become more aware of the health resources available., the partnership with the Val Verde Center was strengthened through the voluntary services of Texas A&M promotores in the recruitment of community residents and in coordinating the community center availability for this event., the partnership with Plaza del Sol Mall (where the annual Amistad Binational Fair is held) these part three years has represented another avenue to promote BBHW's mission to many other families that would otherwise not have known or heard of the projects that take place at a binational level., this was the first of future ventures with Texas of State Services Office of Border and Texas and Human Services Commission Office of Border Affairs., being in a border city, it strengthens the nursing schools' communication and improves the relationship among them. The nursing schools included the TAMIU nursing school and the Facultad de Enfermeria UAT from Nuevo Laredo,. Also, we integrated the Sistema DIF from Nuevo Laredo,, in our binational activities and partner contact list.. UT-School of Public - holding the Border Forum for a second year strengthened collaboration and communication. Fair - the Mexican Consulate's Office was able to seek agencies for support during the Fair. The Cameron County also supported the event along with Valley Baptist Hospital and the Brownsville Clinic. National Immunization Stakeholders Meeting - convening the meeting increased communication by bringing together other border states and counties with common interests in increasing vaccines to avoid preventable diseases and to monitor coverage, effectiveness, and safety. The public health department was able to strengthen communication with the Texas of State Services Office of Border, the BHC, and Secretaría de Salud de through the Brownsville-Matamoros Binational., the communication between our Starr County Judge, Commissioners, Authority, and the Texas of State Services strengthened due to this successful event. Al haber una relación mas cercana entre los diferentes departamentos de salud se logra un mayor avance en las acciones futuras a realizar, como el mayor acercamiento para la difusión y promoción en la prevención de la obesidad y diabetes así como alianzas a nivel binacional para mayor investigación en materia de enfermedades infectocontagiosas. Sí, Agua y Drenaje de Monterrey por segunda ocasión consecutiva proporcionó botes de agua de 500 ml para ser entregados entre los participantes en las Ferias de Salud. El Municipio de Anáhuac colaboró prestando un área de la plaza principal del municipio en donde se efectuaron todas las actividades de la Feria de Salud y la clausura de la SBSF y el Municipio de Sabinas Hidalgo junto con el Club de Leones proporcionaron sus instalaciones para celebrar la inauguración, así como, la Feria de Salud en dicho municipio. Todo esto con la participación de los responsables de programa de los SSNL quienes prestaron servicios de salud de manera gratuita en las diferentes especialidades otorgando consulta general de psicología, dental, vacunación, afiliación al SP, toma citologías, mamografía y revisión de glucosa, presión y peso para diagnosticar enfermedades crónico degenerativas y/o a su vez prevenirlas. Sí, se reforzaron los comités de salud y se realizaron alianzas con el sector escolar tanto de estados unidos como de México y trabajar los programas establecidos. The urban Indian community responds well to social events or gatherings that have an underlying cultural component that combines traditional practices with information and education. EUNIME, Inc. response Trash Talkers Coalition The film festival was a great experience with our partners, Film Fest, high school student organizations, and Operation Samahan, as we were able to provide 150+ youth and adults with information on how to create their own home garden and compost bins as well as promote the benefits of health and wellness associated with these activities. Santa Cruz on Aging Exercise classes as well as glucose and blood pressure screenings were provided to senior citizens during BBHW. Also, the following topics were presented to senior citizens in the prevention of diabetes and obesity: La, Entendiendo la, and Alimentación de la Tercera Edad. Arizona Cochise & Social Services Tohono O'odham Nation ADHS Arizona Disparities Center The highlight to me was that I was able to put out the brochure for our COBINA and was able to get the word out on what we do and what we are all about. Although we are sister offices, we had not had the opportunity to collaborate on a community event. Substance Abuse response SNMDO Ciclovia was a temporary urban space in which community people of all ages interacted with one another through exercise. The project had between 200-250 people from the surrounding neighborhood participating that day. The Ciclovia took place from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Young Park on October 30, 2011, allowing people to take part in a variety of physical activities free of charge. In addition to the jumping balloon, volleyball, and horseshoe games, there was a stage set up for aerobics instructors, yoga teachers, jump rope coaches, and other experts who led the participants in those activities. Columbus-Luna County-Palomas Binational State University Nursing As a kick off to BBHW on October 1st, Gabe's Gym conducted a zumba event at Court House Park in Deming. The people who attended provided positive feedback. This is our first zumba event in honor of BBHW. Through our ongoing work with Border Partners, we had our first U.S.-sponsored BBHW event in Palomas,, México. We were able to reach adults and high school students regarding obesity/diabetes, the dangers of substance use during pregnancy, and how to grow their own vegetables. PMS-Deming Center had a good turnout at their event and were able to educate people on diabetes and weight management. Cooperative Extension conducted a great activity with elementary school students related to making their own hula hoops. demonstrating how fun physical activity can be. The Columbus Fair was a big success. In addition, both PMS-Deming Center and Ben Archer Center provided various health screenings. There were also fun booths that emphasized fun physical activities and healthy snacks. These were a big hit, especially with children. Most Nursing projects are unfunded and any monies spent are provided by the student and the instructor from their own pocket. Receiving money from two different sources to support our contribution to the two events was huge. It enabled us to educate participants about prevention and health promotion activities, help participants understand their risk factors for developing diabetes and obesity, engage in outdoor/physical activities and provide incentives for participants to engage in health behaviors at home. of Office of Border It was an opportunity to highlight other adult-focused programs we work with on the Binational Subcommittee. They had information tables at the summit and were able to visit with participants to tell them about the programs they offer to people at-risk for or who have been diagnosed with diabetes. The highlight was the response we had from area promotores and health service providers. response During the BBHW conference, both nursing schools participated in an educational game where they shared knowledge and challenged themselves to answer health questions about current border binational health issues. The Mexican Consulate held health screenings every first Tuesday of the month since the 2010 BBHW activities. The residents enjoyed free health assistance and literature provided by various agencies. The City of Brownsville Public received a grant funding opportunity for the Brownsville Biggest Loser Challenge. Our strongest highlight was to welcome the participation of our County Judge, Commissioners, Sheriff, and Starr County Authority in BBHW events. En el evento de Megaclase Activate se estrecharon los lazos entre los servicios de salud de chihuahua y servicios educativos en materia de salud en la prevención conjunta de obesidad para un mayor reforzamiento de este problema a nivel local y con el evento de GAPS se observa el interés de la juventud de poder participar activamente entre ellos mismos para disminuir los problemas de obesidad y diabetes asi como nuevos trastornos sociales como el BULLYING y accidentes de tránsito que actualmente se están presentando más en ambos lados de la frontera. Lo que se puede destacar y que nos une es la intensión de mejorar la salud, y hemos observado la sensibilidad que tienen para entregar servicios o donativos en especie sin esperar nada a cambio solo el ayudar a la gente.
