Build interest by asking questions such as the following: Qué ropa usan los bomberos? Qué herramientas o equipos especiales usan? Read the title to the children and talk with them about the cover photo. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Rhyming Words Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say words from the story paired with another word, for example, botas/gotas; mira/gira; ropa/camisa; camión/canción; tomar/rodar; manguera/agua; bomberos/ fl oreros. Alphabet Search Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children search for and locate letters by name. Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Fighting Fires Build on the words related to firefighters and their gear in Visita a la estación de bomberos.
