Page 3 www.stritaparish.org October 29, 2017 FROM THE Brothers and PRIESTS DESK sisters: To test Jesus the Pharisees questioned him about which commandment in the law is the greatest. Jesus answer to the law-experts and leaders of the community takes them beyond any individual commandment or practice to the very foundation of them all: loving God with one s whole being and loving neighbor as oneself. This is the universal and inviolable law. Therefore, Jesus reminds them and by extension all of us: keeping religious laws no matter how meticulously- means nothing if our motivation is not based in loving God and neighbor. If we were to ask ourselves, how have I grown in loving God and neighbor as myself? What would our answer be? From the Church s Thomistic tradition we learn that laws are not entities unto themselves, but always are to lead to the greater good. Law is an ordinance of reason, made by him who has care of the community, for the sake of the common good, Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, Quest. XC). Keeping laws and precepts, the whole law and the prophets, is a way of making visible in our daily living the twofold law of love upon which the commandments are based. Law and love cannot be separated for they bring deeper significance to our duties and communal relationships, a greater understanding of unity, harmony and justice in the land. We can love God and neighbor because the Lord gives us the strength to do so. Pax Christi, Fr. Machado Del Escritorio Hermanas y Del Sacerdote hermanos: Con intención de poner a Jesús a prueba, los fariseos le preguntan: cuál es el mandamiento más grande de la ley. La respuesta que el Maestro ofrece a los legisperitos y prohombres de la comunidad va más allá de la cotidiana observancia de un precepto, los lleva al fundamento de la ley: amar a Dios con todo el ser y al prójimo como a uno mismo. Esta ley es inviolable. Por lo cual, Jesús nos recuerda también a nosotros: cumplir con códigos religiosos -por mucho rigor que pongamosnada significa si el amor a Dios y al prójimo no nos motiva. Si fuésemos a preguntarnos, cuánto ha crecido mi amor a Dios y al prójimo a lo largo de mi vida? Cuál sería la respuesta? La tradición tomista de la Iglesia enseña: las leyes no son entidades en sí mismas, existen para guiarnos a bienes mayores. La ley es una prescripción de la razón, en orden al bien común, promulgada por aquel que tiene el cuidado de la comunidad, (Sto. T. Aquino, Summa Theologiae, Quest, 90). Mantener la ley y preceptos, la ley y los profetas, es una forma de evidenciar en nuestra vida la doble ley del amor, sobre la cual los mandamientos han sido instaurados. La ley y el amor no deben separarse ya que aportan honda significancia a nuestros deberes y relaciones humanas, una mayor comprensión de la unidad, concordia, y justicia en la tierra.
