1 Course Methodology, Information & Policies 1 SPANISH 1003 Technology Enhanced Bienvenido, bienvenida a español 1003! This class is an intermediate Spanish course developed for students with previous language experience. The instruction and context are delivered by a combination of in class face-to-face meetings and a wide range of online activities. The different online components were designed to help you become a more successful language learner by giving you the opportunity to explore different learning modes independently and to provide more exposure to the Spanish language. You will have the opportunity to use your developing Spanish skills in order to explore the cultural histories various Spanish-speaking countries via a wealth of authentic materials that would not be readily accessible in a regular classroom. For that reason the course requires a considerable amount of independent work to be completed online, outside of the classroom contact hours. Methodology: Spanish 1003, like all the language classes in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, is taught in a communicative manner. This methodology is supported by many years of research and it is probably different from what you have experienced in previous language classes. Our approach is based on three fundamental premises of Second Language Acquisition theory: 1. Language learning does not occur in a linear, additive fashion, which means that teaching discrete items does not lean to immediate mastery of such items. Rather, language learning is a gradual and complex process. 2. Learners need substantial exposure to rich, comprehensible input, because in trying to understand the input and paying attention to its meaning, they learn the language forms. 3. Learners also need plenty of opportunities to use the language for real purposes in order to learn it. This occurs in the context of interaction. One of the key features of our approach and our textbook is the emphasis on interaction. For us, interaction is more than an opportunity to practice the language; it is the way that language is learned. This means that in order to be successful at learning, you must be willing to try new forms and vocabularies even before you feel that you have mastered them. We will provide as many opportunities as possible to practice actual communication in the classroom and your active participation in class is expected at all times. Language students often feel that learning would be easier if only they understood grammar. Keep in mind that explicit knowledge of grammar principles does not enable you to communicate. In order to make the best of class time for

2 2 communicative activities, explanations of grammar will be avoided in class. Grammar points are explained in the text and you are expected to study them thoroughly with the help of the resources provided in MySpanishLab. These online materials will give you ample practice opportunities and you are cordially invited to obtain individual help from your instructor or in the Tutor Lab. The ultimate goal of this program is that you will become able to speak, understand, read and write in Spanish within certain contexts (e.g. you will be able to communicate about your weekend activities and your favorite foods). We will strive to help you to develop survival skills in the language, become an independent language learner, and develop risk-taking techniques as a language learner and user within a rich and exciting cultural content. (Incomplete) Assigned at the discretion of the level supervisors when, due to extraordinary circumstances, e.g., hospitalization, a student is prevented from completing the work of the course on time. Requires a written agreement between instructor, level supervisor and student. *SEE page 2 more detailed information about Incompletes. Tutor Lab: All Spanish language students are invited to visit tutors Monday through Friday in 217 Folwell Hall. This is a free service provided by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies. To make your visit more productive, have your questions ready before hand. Keep in mind that tutors do not proofread homework assignments or compositions.

3 3 Computer Lab: The Computer Lab is located in 135 Jones Hall. Check the CLA Language Center web page for hours. COURSE POLICIES Spanish 1003 Scholastic Dishonesty. Scholastic dishonesty is any act that violates the rights of another student with respect to academic work or that involves misrepresentation of a student s own work. Scholastic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to) cheating on assignments or examinations, plagiarizing (misrepresenting as one s own anything done by another), submitting the same or substantially similar papers (or creative work) for more than one course without consent of all instructors concerned, depriving another of necessary course materials, and sabotaging another s work. (CLA Classroom Grading and Examination Procedures) Scholastic dishonesty in any portion of the academic work for a course shall be grounds for awarding a grade of F or N for the entire course. NOTE: Use of on-line translators is not allowed. Work done with the assistance of on-line translators will receive no credit. If you have any questions regarding plagiarism, please go the following site: Credits and Workload Expectations. For undergraduate courses, one credit is defined as equivalent to an average of three hours of learning effort per week (over a full semester) necessary for an average student to achieve an average grade in the course. For example, a student taking a three credit course that meets for three hours a week should expect to spend an additional six hours a week on coursework outside the classroom. Remember that Spanish 1003 is a five credit course. Spanish Department Final Exam Make-Up Policy. The ONLY valid excuses for taking a make-up final exam are the following: 1) you have another U of M exam scheduled at that time, or 2) you have 3 exams scheduled within a 16 hour period. In order to take the make-up final, you must present, in person or via , a current official copy of your class schedule and the class syllabus one week prior to the last day of class to your course supervisor, Dr. A. Carlson-Lombardi (carls135@umn.edu) during office hours or by appointment. You will need to bring to Folwell 214 B or * your printed enrollment summary (go to onestop.umn.edu) with your student ID number and your Spanish 1003 instructor s name on the upper right-hand corner of the sheet. * Copy of the page in the syllabus of the course in conflict showing the conflicting exam time. Only official University of Minnesota scheduled exams (regular exam dates) will be considered as a conflict. Failure to register for the conflict final will result in your inability to take the make-up final and may result in failure of the course, for this is not considered an extraordinary circumstance to merit an incomplete. Complete schedule of final examinations is currently available at:

4 onestop.umn.edu (click on calendars). 4 Pass/fail option. In general, students should plan to take 1xxx-level language courses for a grade. S/N or auditing courses is not a recommended option. Please note that auditors need to be registered and will be asked to complete homework, quizzes, examinations, and peer work activities assigned to students enrolled for A- F credit. Makeup examinations. The dates for all exams are clearly marked and highlighted in your syllabus. Only legitimate and verifiable reasons will be considered for a make up exam. According to the University of Minnesota guidelines legitimate excuses or excused absences for missing class or a test are the following: participation in a scheduled activity of an official University student organization, observance of a religious holiday, verified confining illness, serious verifiable family emergencies, subpoenas, jury duty, and military service. It is the student s responsibility to notify his/her instructor of any excused absence as far in advance as possible. (CLA Classroom Grading and Examination Procedures) If the student has a legitimate excuse, s/he will complete the Excused Absence Form. The student needs to fill it out and include a photocopy of the pertaining documentation. Your instructor will keep the form and documentation on file. Turning in the absence form will not automatically excuse the student s absence. Attendance Attendance is expected and required every day during the entire class period. Being late is not acceptable and it is disruptive. First day: According to university policy, any student who is absent the first day of class can be denied admission to the class. All students, both registered and non-registered, will lose their place in class and move to the bottom of the waiting list after any absence during the first five days of class. Unexcused absences/ Personal Days. You are allowed a limited number personal days. Exceeding the allowed absences will result in the lowering of your course grade. Students are allowed FOUR unexcused absences or personal days in the Tech Enhanced and Intensive classes; TWO unexcused absences/personal days in evening sections, and THREE in Hybrid day sections. If you miss more than this number of days your grade will be lowered one step for each additional day missed. For example, this means that if your overall course grade was a B-, yet you missed one day over the limit, your grade would be lowered to a C+.
