1 Welcome to 5th Grade IP Kristy Johnson and Jennifer Miranda Course Goals and Objectives o The basis of our education in 5 th Grade is the Utah Common Core, which can be found at uen.org. In writing, we will focus on the 6 traits of writing to make our writing more organized and interesting with an emphasis in expository writing. We will also progress in our ability to speak, read, listen and understand and write in Spanish as we explore learn all core subjects in Spanish. o We will also be focusing on skills that will help us succeed; including following the ME in Emerson rules, the five scholarly habits and becoming organized, responsible students in attending to in school tasks and homework. o Every instructional day will be divided in half- with half of instruction and work being done in English and the other half in Spanish. Students will be with in Mrs. Miranda in the morning for Spanish instruction and Mrs. Johnson in the afternoon for English instruction. Students are expected to try their best to stay in the language of the classroom and teacher. Instructional Materials o Math- Houghton Mifflin Expressions In Mathematics, 5th grade, edition 2013 (in English and Spanish) Kendall Hunt Project M 5 Mathematics, Math Exemplars, and Everyday Math will be utilized to supplement Math Expressions as it is more rigorous. o Language Arts- The Great Books Foundation Junior Great Books 6 Traits Writing, William and Mary Jacob s Ladder Reading Comprehension Program, Words their Way will be used for spelling and Spanish language arts will primary come from Calle de Lectura o Science and Social Studies- The Full Option Science System Kits, William and Mary units, Interconnections Science/Social Studies (Spanish) and U.S. Studies Weekly will be integrated into Language Arts as much as possible. Instructional Practices o Science, Social Studies and Health o Students will participate in a combination of activities as well as researching and learning on their own. (experiments/discussions/observations etc.) o All students will be expected to participate in the Science Fair.

2 o Language Arts o Students will participate in whole group, small group and individual reading and writing. o Jr. Great Books and other literature study/comprehension in both languages o Spelling, Grammar, Writing and Literature will be taught in Spanish through Calle de Lectura o Spelling Tests given weekly in both languages. o 6 Trait Writing with expository emphasis. o Math o The student will participate in lecture, class discussion, individual and group work as they learn key concepts and use this information to solve more difficult problems. o Math homework will be given as needed. o All students will be given the opportunity to compete in Math Olympiads. o Course Requirements/Discipline o Homework Folder and Planner o Each student should use a durable homework folder to transport homework and other papers from home to school. o Parents and students should daily review folder so parents can review student work and be aware of homework and any other important news! o The homework folder and planner need to go back and forth from school to home every day. o If your child is working on homework for longer than 45 minutes (reading excluded) on a regular basis please LET US KNOW. We need to be informed so we can make adjustments in what we are doing. Behavior Plan o Schoolwide Here at Emerson, we focus on Positive Behavior as much as we can! The Me in Emerson are the school rules. I will be respectful, be responsible and be safe! I will listen, learn and care! These are to be followed at all places on the school campus. Golden Eagle Tickets are passed out in and out of the classroom for good behavior and 5 names are drawn every day to be called down to the office for a prize. Please see the attached Behavior Identification Chart to see the school wide consequences and protocol for negative behavior management. o Classroom Management We will be using an online system called Class Dojo. Class Dojo is a web-based classroom management tool that allows you to monitor student behavior via the computer or on your smart phone.

3 Within the app, each child has his or her own monster avatar. Throughout the day, we can reward and reinforce specific behaviors by awarding points or deducting points. We will be sending home more information on how to sign up for class dojo. We will also use Class Dojo to send out reminders through-out the year. Grading Procedures o Clear standards and expectations are established for all students at each grade level. To be on grade level, students are expected to be able to demonstrate knowledge for the information that has been taught with minimal assistance from the teacher. These are the Utah Core standards. o Some coursework will be graded on completion, other on accuracy. o Late work will be accepted, but we will penalize it 10% each day it is late. o We will be using power grade book and parents are encouraged to sign up and check grades weekly. More information will be coming home soon. Teacher Contact Information o You are welcome to any concerns. Please call after school has been dismissed to talk with a teacher individually, or call the office during the school day if it is an urgent matter. 4 Keys to Success in 5th grade!- Helping your child get in the habit of these key things will ensure success! o Get in the habit of always using the homework folder and planner properly. These 2 items should go from school to home each day and back the next morning. o Parents please check planner and classroom dojo. Please check to see that written homework in planner is found in homework folder daily. o Reading homework-30 minutes of reading is expected 5 nights a week. Read equally in Spanish and English Please! o Read, read, read at home in both languages and talk about what you are reading as a family Please sign, cut and return upon reading this document. 6 Requerimientos del curso/ Disciplina o Carpeta para las tareas y agenda o Cada estudiante deberá utilizar una carpeta duradera para transportar los deberes y otros papeles de la escuela al colegio. o Tanto padres como estudiantes deberán revisar diariamente el trabajo del niño y estar al tanto de las tareas y otras noticias importantes. o La carpeta de tareas y la agenda tiene que ir y venir cada día del colegio a la escuela y de la escuela al colegio. o Si su hijo está haciendo las tareas por más de 45 minutos (sin leer) normalmente por favor déjenos saber.
