10 Voter Bill of Rights 1. You have the right to cast a ballot if you are a valid registered voter. 16 STATEMENT OF RODOLFO RUDY E. CRUZ CANDIDATE FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF HUNTINGTON PARK GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION I am a Huntington Park resident for last 36 years. My wife and I have raised three children. I have been working for 36 years in the private sector in the capacity of Business Manager. I started participating in City issues since early 2012 when the Council approved a 30% increase of water. I vigorously opposed this water bill increase publicly as well as the termination of programs for our children and elderly at the park or high fees for participation in park activities like AYSO, Tiny Tots, etc. With your support I will demand: 1. To reinstate programs essential to our youth, seniors and City residents 2. Transparency in all City business affairs not just talk about it 3. Members of Council who receive campaign donations not be allowed to vote on contracts for these same contractors or from special interest third parties 4. Better and timely police service needed to all City communities 5. Opposed to increase of revenues by squeezing residents with higher taxes and higher cost of City services instead of practicing better financial management, planning, and competitive contracting 6. 17 STATEMENT OF LETICIA MARTINEZ CANDIDATE FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF HUNTINGTON PARK GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION Age: 42 Occupation: Executive Director/CEO Foremost, I want to thank you for your consideration to voting for me as a Member of the City Council. My life s work has been dedicated only to the community of Huntington Park. As a graduate of the local schools, my career began as a Records Intern Clerk with our Police Department. I then proceeded to my profession with the Huntington Park Chamber of Commerce and have made my daily commitment to fulfill the mission of promoting the businesses and resources of our community. I have experience in managing budgets, reviewing and negotiating contracts with corporations and reviewing operation financial reports. My expertise is building business relationships and creating projects and programs that generate revenue. My years of commitment have also been volunteering in organizations that provide worthy services. I m proud to be a supporter of youth scholarship programs, assist small business with matters that may affect their prosperity, support quality housing for low-income families and seniors, plus advocate to legislators on continuing the funding for the cure against cancer. As a CEO, law enforcement officer, veteran and union rep. I have led the fight to keeping small businesses open, the opening of new businesses, cleaning up our communities, keeping criminals behind bars, our communities safe, and our children out of gangs and drugs. 23 STATEMENT OF ELBA ROMO CANDIDATE FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF HUNTINGTON PARK GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION Age: 39 Occupation: Teacher/Businessowner/Advocate Elba Romo is the proud daughter of immigrants with the honesty, integrity, and passion to help Huntington Park. She is a life-long resident, attending local public schools and churches. Elba Romo is the best qualified candidate with the following credentials: -Bachelors and Masters Degrees with honors, Stanford University -Over twelve years as a Biology/Physics Teacher and a University Professor -Successful business owner -Former City Clerk and Councilmember of Huntington Park ( ) -Founder and volunteer Board member of various community organizations As councilmember, she fought against corruption, consistently opposed tax increases, and voted against wasteful spending. Elba Romo was beholden only to the voters, not to corporate interest. She protected senior services and park programs. 24 STATEMENT OF MARILYN SANABRIA CANDIDATE FOR MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL CITY OF HUNTINGTON PARK GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION Occupation: Supportive Services Coordinator I am a product of Huntington Park. I grew up in this community, attended local schools and graduated from Huntington Park High School. I went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach, becoming the first in my family to graduate college. My work in the Los Angeles Superior Court helping individuals and families understand the legal system inspired me to continue working to improving the quality of life of those around me. In my current job, I help homeless individuals and families find permanent housing and other resources. This election is an opportunity for our community to elect the effective and ethical representation it deserves. As your councilmember I will work very hard to keep our streets clean, our neighborhoods safe, and bring new jobs and opportunities to the city. And, in a professional manor, I will promote better communications in our community. The City of Huntington Park needs to find more money to assist youth, seniors and the unemployed. Not by raising taxes but by fundraising and searching for new resources and grants. During the early seventies, I became the most influential leader for the Mexican American Civil Rights movement, and was able to get the Border Patrol to stop shooting people at the US/Mexico Border. I was also the main leader in the Schools Reform movement to hire more Latino teachers. Today, I am interested in reforming government to work for the people first. As a college professor, I taught Mexican and Mexican American History for 12 years for the Community Colleges. It was also my pleasure to work for L.A. County Government as an Aid to the County Supervisor and as a Representative for L.A. County Health Services, and former Parks Commissioner. 26 CITY OF LOS ANGELES CHARTER AMENDMENT 2 TITLE: NEW ELECTION DATES AND SCHEDULES FOR THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (LAUSD); ONE-TIME ADJUSTMENT TO ALIGN TERMS WITH NEW ELECTION DATES BY THE ISSUE: Shall the City Charter be amended to: 1) change the LAUSD Board of Education's primary and general election dates to June and November of even numbered years beginning in 2020 so that LAUSD elections are held on the same dates as Federal and State elections; 2) provide that, in 2015 and 2017 only, candidates be elected for a term of 5½ years to transition to the new election dates; and 3) adjust vacancy election schedules and allow temporary appointments to fill vacant offices until an election is held?
