1 Pierson Patriot News MARCH 2014 Principal News: Greetings to our Pierson Patriot friends and families, This school year seems to be flying by. It seems incredible to be sharing news and events for March, but here we are! Our 3th, 4th, and 5 th grade students have been working diligently with their academics and are now getting ready to take FCAT tests for the 2013 ~ 2014 school year. Our fabulous 4 th graders completed the FCAT Writing assessment on February 25 th and are to be applauded for their hard work. As we move forward in the school year, we would like to call your attention to some important and newsworthy events. Summer School and Voluntary Prekindergarten: Summer School for recommended students will be held at McGinnis Elementary School this year. Information about the summer session of VPK is included in this newsletter. Information about the school year VPK program at Pierson Elementary is not available at this time. Spring Fling, sponsored by PTA is now in the planning stages and looking for volunteers. At press time, the date was still to be determined, however, we will need lots of help for this big event. Can you help? If so, please contact Mrs. Hogan or Mrs. Bakker in the front office for more information. Yearbook: Do you have a graduating 5 th grader this year? The yearbook still has pages available to create that special dedication for your child. 5 th grade parents should have received an order form from Mrs. Sheppard with details. If not, please call the school and we will provide information. Lastly, it will soon be time to enjoy our spring and summer weather with school sponsored class field trips. If you would like to chaperone for a school field trip, you must have an approved volunteer application on file. If you are unsure of your volunteer status, please contact Mrs. Hogan in the front office. It can take up to 4 weeks for application approval. All chaperones must be approved to accompany students, so check your status or file an application today. As always, thank you for all you do to support Pierson Elementary School. 2 Noticias del Principal: Saludos a familias y amigos de nuestros Patriotas de Pierson, Noticias Patriotas de Pierson MARZO 2014 Este año escolar parece que está volando. Es increíble el estar compartiendo noticias y eventos de marzo, pero aquí vamos! Nuestros estudiantes del 3ro, 4to, y 5to grado han estado trabando diligentemente con sus estudios académicos y ahora nos estamos preparando para los examines del FCAT para el año escolar 2013 ~ Nuestros estudiantes fabulosos del 4to grado completaron el examen de escritura del FCAT el 25 de febrero y aplaudimos su trabajo duro. Así como seguimos adelante en el año escolar, nos gustaría llamar su atención a algunos eventos muy importantes. Escuela de Verano y Jardín de Niños Voluntario: La escuela de verano para estudiantes recomendados se estará llevando a cabo este año en la Escuela Elemental McGinnis. En este periódico estamos incluyendo información acerca del programa VPK en la Escuela Elemental de Pierson que a este tiempo no está a la disposición. Chispazo de Primavera, patrocinado por el PTA están por ahora planeando y buscando voluntarios. 3 KINDERGARTEN This month in Kindergarten we are doing some really exciting things. We will be continuing to understand addition and subtraction in Math. Your child should still be practicing counting to 100, by 1 s and 10 s and understand how to make 10 in several different ways. In Science, we are learning about the day and night sky, and we are starting to learn about plants and animals. In Reading, we will be studying the themes of Weather and Plants. Thank you to those of you who helped to fund our field trip to the Jacksonville Zoo by purchasing doughnuts in our last fundraiser. We appreciate your support! We will be going to the zoo on Wednesday, March 19 th. If you would like to go as a chaperone, please check to make sure you are approved through the front office. Spring Break will be here before we know it. Make sure to keep reading and practicing your sight words every day, even on vacation! FIRST GRADE We can t believe how much time has flown by! Recently in math we have begun working on place value and we will continue doing so for the next few weeks. Please help your child the best you can with their homework and if you have any questions, please ask your child s teacher. In Reading, we have been reading many wonderful stories and learning many reading skills and comprehension strategies. Please see the monthly calendar for the weekly word list and the monthly sight words. We are still working on making our stories more interesting by adding adjectives and more descriptive sentences. In Science, we have been studying about fast and slow changes that happen to Earth s surface. In Social Studies, we have been learning about symbols, monuments, and studying about famous presidents in honor of President s Day. Please continue to read with your child each night and sign their reading log. We cannot stress enough how important reading is for your child s further progress. Also help them with their homework. 4 KINDER Este mes en el Kinder estamos haciendo unas cosas muy excitantes. Vamos a continuar estudiando suma y resta en Matemáticas. Su niño debe de seguir practicando el contar hasta el 100, de 1 en 1, 10 en 10 y el entender de cómo hacer un 10 de diferentes maneras. En Ciencia, estamos aprendiendo acerca del cielo, de día y de noche y estamos empezando aprender acerca de plantas y animales. En Lectura, estaremos estudiando los temas de Clima y Plantas. Gracias a todos aquellos quienes nos ayudaron a recaudar fondos con la venta de donas para nuestro paseo al Zoológico de Jacksonville. Nosotros agradecemos su ayuda! Vamos ir al zoológico el miércoles, 19 de marzo. Si a usted le gustaría ir como acompañante, por favor de asegurarse que está aprobado en la oficina principal. En Estudios Sociales hemos estado aprendiendo acerca de símbolos, monumentos y estudiando acerca de presidentes famosos en honor al Día de Presidentes. Por favor continúe leyendo con su niño todas las noches y firmando la lista de lectura. No podemos expresar lo suficiente lo importante que es la lectura para que su niño continúe progresando. 5 SECOND GRADE Spring is right around the corner and that means so is our Spring Fling! Please contact our PTA if you are willing to volunteer any time for this. Any help is greatly appreciated. We continue to work hard in all areas, spending extra time for reading each day. Your child will take their Reading Unit 4 assessment in the next few weeks, and practice with questioning at home will greatly help them succeed. You can also have them ask you questions about a story or listen to you or an older sibling read. In Math, we have just finished our unit on Addition and Subtraction and taken our test. We move onto Geometry next! Practice for math fluency at home will help your child. This means practicing math facts, both subtraction and addition (without using their fingers to count). In Science, we have moved onto Energy. Talk with your child about the different types of energy you see around you. We ask for your continued support in making sure that your student is here by 8:00 a.m. every morning. We start Walk to Intervention promptly at 8:10 and begin our SIPPS program each day at that time. Missing even one lesson is hard to catch up on. Please make sure each day as your child leaves the house that they are following the dress code procedures and are coming prepared for their special area. It is very important that your student is either wearing or bringing shoes that can be worn during P.E. Lastly, it is still extremely important for your child to read every night and complete any homework assignments. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child s teacher. We thank you for your help and support, THIRD GRADE Wow! Is it really March already? Time is going by so quickly! We have been working hard to prepare for the FCAT test that is just around the corner. Third grade is learning so much and we are so excited! Please remember to get your child to school by 8AM each day so they do not miss out on the fun! In Reading, third grade will be continuing to focus on questioning in both fiction and nonfiction texts. We will focus on context clues and looking back into a story or text to find proof when answering questions. Please make sure you are reading at home with your child each night. In Math, we just finished a unit on Geometry. We will be learning measurement next. This unit will include measuring objects, as well as, finding perimeter. We will continue reviewing and getting ready for FCAT. Please continue reviewing multiplication facts at home with your child. In Science, we have just wrapped up heat and light energy, and are now exploring the wonderful world of plants! We have learned all about the different parts of a plant, and how they help plants to make food, stay anchored to the ground, and help the plant survive. We will continue learning about plants and the differences between flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Please do not hesitate to contact your child s teacher if you have any questions or concerns about their academic progress or the upcoming FCAT. 6 SEGUNDO GRADO La primavera ya se nos acerca y eso quiere decir que también el Chispazo de Primavera! Por favor póngase en contacto con el PTA si desea ser voluntario para este evento. Apreciamos toda la ayuda. Continuamos trabajando duro en todas nuestras áreas todos los días poniendo tiempo extra en nuestra lectura. En pocas semanas su niño estará tomando el examen de Lectura Unidad 4 y la práctica de las preguntas en casa será de mucha ayuda para que tengan éxito. Ellos también le pueden hacer preguntas acerca de lo que usted está escuchando o escucharlo a usted leer o algún hermano(a) mayor. En Matemáticas, acabamos de terminar con nuestra unidad de Suma y Resta y hemos tomado nuestro examen. Muy pronto estaremos practicando Geometría. Practique para más fluidez matemática en casa con su niño. Esto quiere decir practicar los factores de matemáticas, ambos resta y suma (Sin usar los dedos para contar). En Ciencia, estamos estudiando la Energía. Hable con su niño acerca de los diferentes tipos de energía que mira a su alrededor. Le seguimos pidiendo que se asegúrese que su niño este aquí a las 8:00 a.m. todas las mañanas. Empezamos a caminar a intervención a las 8:10 y empezamos con nuestro programa SIPPS todos los días a esa hora. Cuando fallan una lección es bien duro el reponerla. Por favor asegúrese que su niño venga vestido adecuadamente y preparado para sus clases especiales. Es muy importante que los niños vengan o traigan zapatos apropiados para Educación Física. Y últimamente es de suma importancia que su niño lea todas las noches y que complete sus asignaturas de tarea. Si tiene alguna pregunta o duda por favor de comunicarse con el maestro de su niño. TERCER GRADO Wow! Ya se nos llego marzo. El tiempo se nos está pasando bien rápido! Hemos estado trabajando muy duro preparándonos para el examen FCAT que ya se nos acerca. El tercer grado está aprendiendo mucho y estamos muy emocionados! Por favor de traer a su niño a las 8:00 am todos los días para que no se pierdan nada de la diversión. En Lectura, el tercer grado continuara con preguntas de textos de ficción y reales. Nos estaremos enfocando en claves y estudiando de nuevo lo que hemos leído en la historia para asegurarnos cuando contestamos las preguntas. Por favor asegúrese de leer con su niño todas las noches. En Matemáticas, acabamos de terminar con la unidad de Geometría. Estamos empezando ahora con medida, y estaremos aprendiendo acerca de medidas. Esta unidad incluirá objetos de medidas así como también encontrando el perímetro. Continuaremos revisando y alistándonos para el FCAT. Por favor continúe estudiando los factores de multiplicación en casa con su niño. En Ciencia, acabamos de terminar con la energía de calor y luz y ahora estamos explorando el grandioso mundo de plantas. Hemos aprendido acerca de las partes de la planta y como las plantas nos ayudan hacer comida, mantenerlas en la tierra, y como ayudar a mantener la planta viva. Continuaremos aprendiendo acerca de las plantas y la diferencia entre plantas que tienen flores y las que no tienen flores. Por favor no vacile en ponerse en contacto con la maestra de su niño si tiene alguna pregunta o preocupación acerca del progreso de su niño o con el FCAT. 7 FOURTH GRADE Fourth grade ROCKS!!!! Our students sold over five hundred donuts from Krispy Kreme. Our parents played a big part in helping sell these scrumptious treats. This fundraiser will be a big help in paying for most of our 4 th grade fieldtrip to the Orlando Science Center. We have been working on becoming amazing authors. On February 11, 2014, all 4 th grade classes participated in a Write In. Students spent the day rotating from classroom to classroom where they were involved in different writing activities. Some included a Survivor writing challenge (who could name the writing prompts the fastest), scoring actual FCAT essays, and sentence add-ons to make a story. The students and their teachers had a great time, and it was good way to review before FCAT Writes. Thank you to Mrs. Hinson for coordinating all of the activities! (We are so lucky to have Mrs. Hinson) Our 4 th grade students are doing fantastic things in the classroom. They are working so hard and we are proud of their accomplishments. We will continue to work hard in the classroom and ask that at home you continue to read with them and make sure they know they fluently recall multiplication facts. 7 Pierson Patriot News

8 CUARTO GRADO Los del cuarto grado se la saben! Nuestros estudiantes vendieron más de quinientas donas de Krispy Kreme. Nuestros padres tomaron una gran parte ayudando a vender estos suculentos bocadillos. Los fondos de esta venta serán de gran ayuda para pagar por la mayoría del paseo al Centro de Ciencia de Orlando. Hemos estado trabajando muy duro en ser grandes autores. El 11 de febrero, 2014, todas las clases del cuarto grado participaron en un Write In. Los estudiantes pasaron el día de clase en clase donde se involucraron en diferentes actividades de escritura. Algunos incluyeron reto de escritura de Sobrevivir (quien podría poner el nombre de las escrituras lo más rápido), puntos actúales de ensayos de FCAT, y agregándole a las oraciones para hacer una historia. Los estudiantes y sus maestros la pasaron muy bien y fue una buena forma de revisar antes del FCAT Writes. Gracias a la Sra. Hinson por coordinar todas las actividades ( tenemos una gran suerte el tener a la Sra. Hinson!) Nuestros estudiantes del 4to grado están haciendo cosas fantásticas en el salón de clase. Ellos están trabajando bien duro y estamos muy orgullosos de sus logros. 9 5 th Grade Ms. Hernandez s 5 th grade class & Ms. Perry s 2 nd grade class are working together to create Reading Buddies. The fifth grade students visit the 2 nd grade class and read out loud with their Reading Buddies. Reading Buddies can enhance and improve a student s reading and fluency skills. The students are excited about the program, reading, and can t wait to visit their buddies each month! 9 Pierson Patriot News

10 QUINTO GRADO La Clase del 5to grado de la Sra. Hernández y la clase del 2do grado de la Sra. Perry están trabajando juntos para crear Compañeros de Lectura. Los estudiantes del 5to grado visitan la clase del 2do grado y leen en voz alta con sus compañeros de lectura. Los Compañeros de Lectura enriquecen y mejoran las destrezas de fluidez de lectura. 11 ART March is Youth Art Month! Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual observance to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Pierson Elementary will be celebrating Youth Art Month with our students beautiful art works displayed throughout the school. Here are some excerpts from our YAM news letter titled Art Shapes the World This is a most important time in our nation s history, and, in fact, the world s. And it s a time for us to deepen the knowledge and understanding of the value of visual arts education in developing the human potential of our nation s youth if we are to prepare our students for success in the 21 st century. Yes- Art Shapes the World! We must realize that the visual arts are essential to a high-quality and balanced education. Deborah B. Reeve, EdD and Deborah M. Fanning, CAE Congratulations Jose Torres! Jose s artwork, Harvest Still Life, has been selected for display at this year s 42 nd Annual Volusia Students Create K-12 Art Exhibit. Jose s art work will be on display at the Gateway Center of the Arts, Debary, with an opening reception on March 2 nd - April 7 th from 2:00-4:00pm. Presentations to celebrate this special occasion will take place at 3:00PM. Family and friends are invited to attend and support Jose with his first Art Exhibition. Congratulations again Jose. 12 ARTE Marzo es el Mes de Arte Juvenil! Mes de Arte de Jóvenes (YAM) esta es una celebración anual para dar énfasis a lo valorable que es la educación de arte para todos los niños y animar para apoyar la calidad de programas de arte escolares. La Escuela Elemental de Pierson estará celebrando el Mes de Arte Juvenil con los trabajos bellísimos de arte de nuestros estudiantes los cuales están en exhibición en varias partes en nuestra escuela. Aquí hay algunos fragmentos de nuestra carta de noticias titulado Art Shapes the World (Arte Forma el Mundo) Este es el tiempo más importante en la historia de nuestra nación, mejor dicho de los mundos. Y también es un tiempo para que nosotros ampliemos nuestro conocimiento y entendimiento del valor de la educación de artes visuales desarrollando el potencial humano de nuestros jóvenes en nuestra nación y preparar a nuestros estudiantes para tener éxito en el siglo 21. 13 ESOL The ESOL Team and classroom teachers will be administering the CELLA on March 3-April 4 th. The ESOL teachers will continue to meet with their ESOL students when testing is completed. Summer 2014 Voluntary Prekindergarten! Families of incoming kindergartners who have not taken advantage of the state s free Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Program should consider enrolling their child in this summer s program. Studies have shown that students who attend VPK generally do significantly better in kindergarten than students who did not participate in VPK. The summer program will operate 4-days per week, generally Monday through Thursday, beginning Monday, June 16, to Thursday, August 7. School hours are scheduled for 7:37 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be free. Transportation will not be provided To participate, a child must: be 5 years-old on or before September 1, 2014; be a resident of Volusia County; and have a current, valid summer 2014 certificate of eligibility from the Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia Counties (386) , (386) or (386) or Contact the school s office to schedule an appointment to complete a registration. 14 ESOL El Equipo de ESOL y maestros del aula estarán dando el examen CELLA del 3 de marzo al 4 de abril. 15 Young leaders helping others In K-Kids clubs worldwide, more than 36,000 elementary children are learning leadership through service. Pierson Elementary K-Kids are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Astor. The K-Kids at Pierson Elementary raised $ in February, through a Valentine candy gram fundraiser. The funds will be donated back into the community to charities and organizations Pierson K-Kids choose to support. In big and small ways, K-Kids are changing the world around them. 16 Lideres Jovenes ayudando a otros Los grupos a nivel mundial de K-Kids, mas de 36,000 estudiantes de escuela elementaría están aprendiendo a ser líderes por medio de su servicio. Los K-Kids de la Escuela Elemental de Pierson son patrocinados por el Kiwanis Club de Astor. Los K-Kids de la Escuela Elemental de Pierson recaudaron $ en febrero, durante su venta de dulce gramas del día de San Valentín. Los fondos serán donados en la comunidad a organizaciones de caridad que el K-Kids de Pierson decidan dar apoyo. De maneras grandes y pequeñas, K-Kids estan cambiando el mundo alrededor de ellos.
