1 Poinciana Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 1 0f 4 Si necessity traduccion de esta carta llamar a Mrs. Barreno August 24, 2015 Welcome to the School Year. What an outstanding opening of school this year. Thank you for attending the Meet and Greet or coming in the first few days of school. The start of the year was extremely calm and smooth. As you visit our campus you may notice some enhancements. We hope you enjoy our front entrance landscape remodel donated by Home Depot this summer and organized through PTO. Our main hallway also features a new Strategic Thinking area highlighting student and class work. In our front office we have hung a PES t-shirt quilt, donated by Mr. Saladino (Art Teacher) and made by one of our PES staff members, Mrs. Zullo, our Safe Schools Assistant. Our school garden is a work in progress by all the Poinciana students, through donations from Sports Club and the organization of Mrs. Campanile (Kindergarten Teacher). Last year our staff started reviewing our Mission and Vision to reflect our school. More information will be coming for parent feedback. WOW, lots of fun, new and exciting happenings this year for our Pelicans! Our theme this year is Lasso Your Learning. Spirit shirts are available through PTO in our front office. Western themes will be around our hallways and classrooms. The students are really excited for an amazing year with new Reading and PBS Incentives. You might even hear your child practicing our all-call, Pelican Pard ners, Yee-Haw! This newsletter will hopefully provide informational items with more to come during Curriculum Night on September 15 th. B-Fit: Poinciana is extremely excited to support the District s B-Fit Toolkit to promote nutrition, fitness and health. Poinciana is supporting: Be Healthy, Be Active, and Be Well! We want to work together as a district, school, and staff with parents and students to participate in healthy celebrations (including birthdays) at school. Please check with your child s classroom teacher to support our B-Fit initiative at Poinciana before you send food items to school because each teacher has some other creative and fun ideas. Please see the District B-Fit webpage in regards to this policy: Classroom and school-wide celebrations involving food have a healthy focus: crackers, pretzels, popcorn, fruit, yogurt, etc. Cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, etc. are not part of our healthy focus this year. Another idea would be to support literacy or content send in a book for the class, pencils, bookmarks, or stickers to celebrate special days or events. In order to also support healthy celebrations without food items, students might be the helper for the day, sit in a special chair, or visit the office for a special treat. Communication: Communication is extremely vital between school and home. Each quarter, administration sends home a newsletter highlighting school-wide events, procedures, and/or celebrations. Monthly calendars come home featuring PTO activities, SAC (School Advisory Committee), musicals, special school-wide events, and District and State assessments. We encourage parents, grandparents, friends and family to participate in as many events as possible. Each Thursday, your child brings home their Thursday Folder full of school work, school news and District information. Each classroom teacher works with your child to create a Student Data Notebook. The Student Data Notebook comes home at various times throughout the quarter for you to review with your child. The purpose of the notebook is for your child to track their own academic growth and progress in Reading, Writing, Math, and Science toward their goals and to share their progress with their parent(s). Throughout the school year, your phone will ring with messages from Poinciana. Please take a minute to listen to the entire message, as each message has important school-based and/or District information. For an additional way to stay connected, please visit our website, to help stay up-date. You can also download the CCPS app, join us on Facebook at PoincianaPTO or follow us on

2 Parent Involvement: Parent Involvement is a priority this year and we hope you will become active in our many school-based opportunities. We encourage you to join our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and support school-wide events, fundraisers, and celebrations. Feel free to attend our monthly SAC meetings to discuss educational information directly relating to our School Improvement Plan. Please contact our PTO President, Cathy Chickerell, poincianapto@gmail.com, or attend the first PTO meeting being held on September 8 at 6:30pm in our Media Center for more information. Reading Incentive from Mrs. Humberger, Media Specialist Welcome to the Reading Rodeo at the Media Center! This year, our PES Pard ners will be blazing new trails and trying to beat last year s record of reading over 117 million words! There s even a rumor that Ms. Daniel will dye her hair purple if we beat that number (don t tell her I spilled the beans!). The whole school is focused on literacy learning and becoming better readers. Activities for the year include the Reading Bookmark Rodeo, the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Program, Reading Counts Incentives, and Lunch with the Library Ladies. As always, we welcome parents and families into the Media Center. We can t wait for the Rodeo to begin! Sports Club: Sports Club and Poinciana will collaborate together on an after-school format focused on academics, technology, hands-on activities, and sports. Mr. Matt Gilbert, Sports Club Director, and our Poinciana certified teachers have created a unique schedule for the after-school program to support homework, Reading, Math, STEM and the Arts. For more information, as well as, scholarship opportunities, please contact Sports Club or pes@sportsclubnaples.org Uniform Policy: Poinciana has a unified dress code for students. Monday-Thursday students are to wear a solid colored polo shirt and Bermuda shorts or pants of any color. Jeans, denim shorts, leggings, athletic pants and boot-like shoes are not permitted. Friday is Spirit Day! Students can wear a PES spirit shirt on Fridays ONLY. Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes or sneakers are required each day. If you should need assistance with meeting the demands of the dress code, please contact our School Counselor, Mrs. Steffens. Thank you for your cooperation. Volunteer: Being a School Volunteer is another vital way to be involved. School volunteers help with many aspects of our community. Here are a few examples on how volunteers help around our school: Media Center, Book Fair, special PTO or school activities, building or grounds beautification, garden, and STEM or hands-on projects. Please join us on September 18th at 9:00am to learn more about volunteer opportunities, complete an Orientation Program packet and enjoy a light breakfast. We can t wait to meet you and start a year full of fun. Arrival Procedures: One-way traffic for arrival. Speed limit is 5mph. There is one lane open for morning drop off starting at 7:45am. If a student needs to be dropped off earlier, please contact Sports Club to register for before-school care. This program begins at 6:30am for a fee. This is extremely important for your child s safety. PES supervision is not available until 7:45am. Students enjoy the WPES morning news each day at 8:20am. The TARDY bell rings at 8:25am. Students are tardy if they re not in their classroom by the time the tardy bell rings. Students who arrive after 8:25am (tardy bell) need to be escorted into the building to assure supervision is provided at all times. Attendance is extremely important to ensure that all students are provided proper instructional time in each subject area. Each student that is at school EVERYDAY, ALL DAY will receive an attendance chip to be placed into a grade level drawing on Fridays. When a student s chip is drawn, they will visit the Celebration Closet to select a prize.

3 Dismissal Procedures: One-way traffic for dismissal. Speed limit is 5mph. There are two lanes open for dismissal starting at 2:15pm. The teachers are dedicated to maximizing the instructional time throughout the day. Students are actively engaged with instruction until the dismissal bell rings at 2:50pm. We encourage appointments for your child be made after 3:00pm, when possible. We ask that you send in a written note when there is a change to your child s transportation. Without a written note or phone call from parent/guardian, the school cannot make a transportation change. All changes to transportation must be communicated to the front office by 2:15pm. Car Riders: The PES staff requires each car to have a car rider sign (blue) in the front window of their car. This sign indicates the first and last name of your child and their teacher. Please hang the sign from the rearview mirror or angle it toward center white line, so the caller can see it clearly. The signs are available in the front office. The latest pick-up time for car riders is 3:10pm. The PES car signs (blue ) are the only ones that are allowed. Please note: When you pick up your child in the front office, we always require photo identification. Visitor Parking and Traffic Flow: All visitors need to park in the Visitor Parking Lot past the front office on the southeast side. There are designated signs posted for the Visitor Parking Lot and the speed limit is 5mph everywhere on school property. Starting at 8:45am, the traffic pattern changes from a one-way arrival and becomes two-way traffic into the Visitor Parking Lot during the school day from 8:45am-2:15pm this allows visitors to travel safely to and from the Visitor Parking Lot. At 2:15pm, the two-way traffic into the Visitor Parking is changed back to the one-way dismissal line. The car rider lanes that pass in front of the office are ONLY open for drop off from 7:45-8:45 and re-open at 2:15 for dismissal traffic. Our goal this year is to continue our communication and celebrate the successes and address challenges. We are working hard to keep each parent/guardian connected this year through our website, marquee, phone message system, monthly calendars and quarterly newsletters. Please visit our website, to help stay up-to-date. You can also download the CCPS app, join us on Facebook at Poinciana PTO or follow us on Our staff is dedicated to making an exciting, engaging, and meaningful school year focused on student achievement. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Curriculum Night on September 15 th to learn more about our school. If we can be of assistance anytime, please give us a call. Your child has many advocates ready to lead, support and encourage them in any manner: Your child s Classroom Teacher, (main number) School Counselor, Mrs. Steffens, Youth Relations Deputy, Deputy Soto, Media Specialist, Mrs. Humberger, Reading Coach, Mrs. Johnson, InSS, Mrs. Murray, Sincerely, Ms. Susan Daniel, Principal Mrs. Georgie Elgin, Assistant Principal
