1 LESSON 6 THE FUTURE TENSE Introduction Objectives Prerequisites Vocabulary Building Decision Table The future tense is used to describe an action that is going to take place at a later time. Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to: 1. conjugate regular verbs in the future tense 2. use the future tense according to context 3. conjugate irregular verbs in the future tense You should be already familiar with: Lessons 1-5 You are encouraged to use a dictionary to expand your vocabulary. If you are already familiar with the objectives, proceed to Lesson 7 on page
2 THE FUTURE TENSE Introduction The future tense is used to describe an action that is going to take place at a later time. Conjugation -AR. ER, -IR Ending verbs Take the infinitive and add the following endings: Example Yo amaré Tú amarás Él/Ella/Usted amará Nosotros amaremos Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes amarán 108

4 MEANING OF THE FUTURE TENSE Introduction The future tense is used to describe an action that will take place at a later time or to express probability with respect to the present. Uses The future is used: 1. to express an action that is going to take place at a later time 2. to indicate probability with respect to the present. Yo iré al cine maňana. (I will go to the movies tomorrow.) Serán las tres. (It is probably three o clock.) With adverbs of time Common expressions signaling the need for the future tense include: o maňana (tomorrow) o más tarde (later) o luego (later) o pasado maňana (day after tomorrow) o el domingo (any other day of the week or month) que viene (next Sunday ) 110
