1 Friday Letter January 11, 2013 Dear ECP families, Happy New Year! We have had a wonderful first week back from winter vacation and are excited about the rest of this school year. Several start-of-year announcements: As you know, the teachers and I met for professional development during your child s first week of Winter Break. During this week, we did a lot of reflection and analysis of what is working well at our school and also made several plans to improve our school. This included some movement of teaching assignments to better meet our student needs. Please talk with your child about if any changes were made to his/her homeroom teachers, and please come to next Family Night on Thursday to get to know your child s teachers better. We ve attached an updated version of our teacher s qualifications and contact information for your convenience. If you have concerns about your child s class, please reach out to the teachers directly to discuss, and call the office if you need additional information. Next Thursday s Family Night is a bit different than previous nights because different grade levels are focusing on different topics: Fourth and fifth grade will write stories and learn about our grammar program at Family Writing Night. Sixth grade families will enjoy map games, a timeline challenge and will be looking at how we study cultures during Family Social Studies Night. Seventh and eighth grade families are invited to ECP s first High School Fair, with representatives from many local schools participating. Many people have gone far above and beyond in the last month in support of our school, and we would like to publicly thank: Julie Zuniga for organizing our Fresh & Easy $hop for Schools Night and all of the families who volunteered at the event and sent in receipts. Ms. Sussman for coordinating with the BookEnds organization to receive a donation of more than 5,000 books for our classroom libraries and also all of the students and parents who have been helping to sort and label these books. Several of our seventh and eighth graders Ashley Valle, Alexis Guerrero, and Viviana Zuniga who organized a holiday food drive at our Ann Street campus and the SCU homeroom for collecting the largest amount of donations. The Los Angeles Police Department and LAUSD School Police who have provided extra security at both of our campuses and all of the public school campuses this week to ensure a safe arrival and dismissal. As always, please contact us with any questions, suggestions, or concerns. Sincerely, Upcoming Dates Every Friday early dismissal Thursday, January 17 Family Night You are welcome to bring a picnic-style lunch to enjoy on campus between dismissal and the start of the program Friday, January 18 Progress Report #3 Monday, January 21 st Martin Luther King Day No School Thursday, January 24 th 7:45 Ann Street School Director Friday, January 25 th College Shirt Day Endeavor College Preparatory Charter School prepares our students with the academic skills, character traits, and intellectual discipline to excel as leaders in high school, college, and their community I have read and understood the January 11, 2013, Friday letter. 3 Friday Letter January 18, 2013 Dear ECP families, Several announcements this week: January Family Night We had an incredible turnout at all of last night s family events. Fourth and fifth grade parents practiced the Question Answer Flow with their children and told stories during their Writing Night, sixth graders and their families played map games during their Social Studies Night, and our older students and families met with representatives from ten local high schools to learn more about some of their options for ninth grade. Mark your calendar now for next month Thursday, February 7 th! Progress Reports The first progress report for trimester two is being sent with your child today. This means we have completed about 1/3 of this trimester. We hope you and your child are pleased with his/her current progress, and we would like to remind all of our families to continue to check your child s completed homework before signing the agenda each night. If you have questions about your child s homework or progress, please contact his/her teachers. Independent Reading As discussed at your report card conferences before break, the teachers are pushing harder than ever to help your child grow as a reader. In order to achieve our reading goals, it is critical that your child reads at home for 30 minutes or more every single night. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING you can do to support your child s future academic success. As always, please contact us with any questions, suggestions, or concerns. Sincerely, Upcoming Dates Every Friday early dismissal Friday, January 18 th Progress Report #3 Monday, January 21 st Martin Luther King Day No School Thursday, January 24 th 7:45 Ann Street Friday, January 25 th College Shirt Day Wednesday, January 30 th Board of Directors Meeting Thursday, February 7 th Family Night School Director Friday, February 22 nd Family Shakey s Night Endeavor College Preparatory Charter School prepares our students with the academic skills, character traits, and intellectual discipline to excel as leaders in high school, college, and their community I have read and understood the January 18, 2013, Friday letter. 5 Friday Letter January 25, 2013 Dear ECP families, At yesterday s, parents again expressed concern for student safety during our arrival and dismissal times. As reminders: Families should pull cars all the way forward to drop off students in the morning and let students out quickly. At dismissal, we ask that you have your child remain on campus until you pick them up, rather than make plans to pick him/her up a block or two away. This, of course, is your family s choice, but we need you to be aware that the school does not provide any supervision of the walking routes, bus stops, or corner store. We believe your child is safer with you meeting him/her at school than waiting for you off campus. Next week, our ECP Board of Directors will be meeting with the Futuro Prep Board to discuss plans of merging into a single charter school. This will allow the younger students from Futuro s elementary grades to automatically become ECP 4 th graders. We have been discussing this plan with excited families for years and are excited to be moving forward with the creation of an extraordinary college prep school that begins in kindergarten and continues seamlessly through eighth grade. If you are interested in learning more details or asking questions about the merger process, please join us next Wednesday evening for a joint board meeting at Futuro s campus in Boyle Heights. As our students look ahead at February, we often begin to get calls about what children are allowed to bring for classmates. To celebrate Valentine s Day, students are invited to bring a valentine card and/or a treat for each of their classmates. We ask that families show respect for every member of the homeroom by bringing the same thing for every classmate or not bringing anything at all. A list of names for each homeroom will be sent home with your child next Friday. As always, please contact us with any questions, suggestions, or concerns.
