1 Did You Get It? Presentación de gramática Level 2 p. 315 AVANZA! Goal: Learn how to form affirmative tú commands. UNIDAD 6 Lección 1 Affirmative Tú Commands Regular Verbs Read the indicative sentences in the left column. Then read the commands in the right column. Compare the boldfaced verbs in both. Are they the same or different? Él filma la escena. (He fi lms the scene.) Ella escribe el guión. (She writes the script.) Filma la escena! (Film the scene!) Escribe el guión! (Write the script!) EXPLANATION: You use an affirmative tú command to tell a friend, family member, or someone with whom you are familiar to do something. Note that regular affirmative tú commands are the same as the él/ella/usted form of the present indicative. Irregular Verbs Read the following sentences, paying attention to the boldfaced verbs. Él hace una película de aventuras. (He makes an adventure fi lm.) Ella va al cine. (She goes to the movies.) Usted es bueno. (You are good.) Haz una película de aventuras! (Make an adventure fi lm!) Vé al cine! (Go to the movies!) Sé bueno! (Be good!) EXPLANATION: Some verbs are irregular in the affirmative tú command form and need to be memorized. Study the list below. Verb decir (to say, to tell) poner (to put) salir (to leave) tener (to have) venir (to come) digo pongo salgo tengo vengo Yo form of the present indicative Affirmative tú command di pon sal ten ven Pronouns and tú commands Study the following sentences. Di las palabras! Dilas! Filma la película! Fílmala! (Say the words!) (Say them!) (Film the movie!) (Film it!) EXPLANATION: Pronouns are attached at the end of affirmative tú commands. Note that when the command has two or more syllables, an accent is used to show stress.

Negative Tú Commands Regular Verbs A negative tú command is used to tell a friend, family member, or someone with whom you are familiar not to do something. Read and study the chart. Infinitive Present Tense Negative tú Commands hablar yo hablo No hables tanto! (Don t talk so much!) correr yo corro No corras tanto! (Don t run so much!) dormir yo duermo No duermas tanto! (Don t sleep so much!) EXPLANATION: To form a negative tú command, drop the -o ending of the present indicative and add these endings: for -ar verbs, add -es; for -er and -ir verbs, add -as. Verbs with Spelling Changes Study the negative tú commands for -car, -gar, and -zar verbs. UNIDAD 6 Lección 1 Infinitive Present Tense Negative tú Commands tocar Yo toco la cámara. No la toques! (Don t touch it!) apagar Yo apago las luces. No las apagues! (Don t turn them off!) comenzar Yo comienzo la escena. No la comiences! (Don t start it!) EXPLANATION: Verbs that end in -car, -gar, and -zar have the same spelling changes as in the yo form of the preterite: the c changes to qu, the g to gu, and, the z to c. These changes are necessary to keep the correct pronunciation. Also note that pronouns with negative tú commands appear before the verb. Irregular Verbs Some verbs have irregular negative tú commands. Study these below. Infinitive Negative tú Command dar (to give) no des (don t give) ir (to go) no vayas (don t go) saber (to know) no sepas (don t know) estar (to be) no estés (don t be) ser (to be) no seas (don t be) EXPLANATION: Verbs whose yo form in the present indicative does not end in -o, such as doy, voy, sé, estoy, soy, have irregular negative tú commands. These must be memorized. 7

UNIDAD 7 Lección 1 Subjunctive with Impersonal Expressions You already know how to form the subjunctive and how to use it after expressions of hope with ojalá que. You also use the subjunctive after impersonal expressions, such as those below. Read and study the sentences in the chart, paying attention to the highlighted expressions and verbs. Es importante que comamos el desayuno. Es necesario que ella exprese su punto de vista. Es malo que él publique el periódico con errores. Es bueno que tengas la cámara. Es preferible que escriba tres artículos. (It is important that we eat breakfast) (It is necessary that she express her point of view.) (It s bad that he publish the newspaper with errors.) (It s good that you have the camera.) (It s preferable that he write three articles.) EXPLANATION: The subjunctive is used after impersonal expressions, such as es importante que, (it s important that), es necesario que (it s necessary that), es malo que (it s bad that), es preferible que (it s preferable that), and so on. In fact, it is used after all impersonal expressions except those that indicate certainty, such as es claro (it s clear), es cierto (it s certain), es evidente (it s evident), and so on. Read the following sentences, paying attention to the highlighted words. Es necesario que me dé el artículo. Es importante que nos expliques tu opinión. Es malo que no les presenten toda la información. (It s necessary that he give me the article.) (It s important that you explain to us your opinion.)
