1 AP SPANISH CURRICULUM The goal of the course is to prepare the students to present proficiency in interactive communication, productive communication and receptive communication. The four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) will be developed and integrated daily in classroom activities, after school enrichment, and language laboratory practices. This daily implementation will familiarize students of general differences and variations in accent in register of Spanish speakers in formal and informal settings. These can be achieved by emphasizing the five goal areas of the Standards for Foreign Language in the 21 st Century, Communication, Communities, Connections and Cultures. Students should strive to speak and write in Spanish at a level equivalent to fifth or sixth year university or college courses. The student should show communicative ability by exhibiting strength in linguistic skills, such as fluency and accuracy. Many of the sources used in instruction will be authentic in order to allow students to function at a skill similar to a heritage speaker. The variation of sources will consist of regional settings, registers, styles, topics and types of disclosures. Cultural and academic views can also be attained. The content of these sources should reflect arts, current events, history, literature, sports etc. The students can demonstrate evidence of their aural and verbal skill development through many assessments. Student should practice impromptu speech as well as prepared oral presentations, role playing, discussed groups. Students will strive to convey meaningful messages employing use of adequate vocabulary, ways to address different social settings and audiences. Upon listening to Spanish spoken sources related to social or cultural topics, such as everyday conversation, dialogues, media broadcasts, or interviews, students can: Predict or make inferences by identifying and summarizing major ideas and important details. Synthesize the source and express opinions. Infer social relationships by interpreting linguistics cues. Initiate, maintain and close a conversation. Create questions in order to clarify or obtain additional information. Communicate with proper semantics grammar. Recognize cultural elements. Demonstrate grammar control and good pronunciation in two to three minute oral presentations while describing, narrating and presenting information or persuasive arguments. Reading and writing skills can be developed with recordings and films as well as magazines, newspapers, literary excerpts, on line publications and other written sources that integrate academic, cultural, personal, social aspects. Reading comprehension can be tested through multiple choice questions similar to the AP Exam, discussions and projects. Students should practice formal and informal writing tasks. Essay practice should involve planning, pre writing, proofing. In demonstrating these proficiencies students can:

2 Identify and summarize main points and important details and make appropriate inferences and predictions. Write a coherent and cohesive persuasive or analytical essay with good syntactical and grammatical control. There are presently sixty one students in the 4 th year Spanish. The make up of is about 45% Heritage Speakers and 55% Non Heritage students. While there are some juniors that are Non Heritage students most of them are seniors. Seniors in 4 th year are encouraged to take the AP Language test so they can prepare for the Literature Exam as seniors. In the past three years, most student with a Hispanic heritage or daily experience with Hispanics have received a 4 or 5 on the AP Language test, while the Non Hispanics range from 1 3. The lessons will revolve around themes connecting readings from the AP Literature list. Students advancing to 5 th year can continue readings the following year and attempt the Literature AP exam. Any GRAMMAR topics that appear in parenthesis signify that they are review activities that connect with a particular reading. Most test will be given in the AP Language Test format. Listening activities will correlate with the audio ancillaries provided with the texts used as well as AP Spanish, preparing for the Language exam, by Diaz, Leicher Prieto, Nadelbach, authentic materials including periodicals, passages from the Internet, visual realia, films, and radio broadcasts. Each individual unit will include taking practices tests from the same source as well as Barron s How to prepare for the AP Spanish advanced placement examination. First semester There will be a cultural activity once a month revolving around Latin American independence days, Día de los muertos, and posadas and Navidad.
