2 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 28, 2014 THE THEME TODAY IS THE TWO SONS: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAYING AND DOING We have the freedom to say yes or no to God. But this means we are responsible for our actions. We sometimes abuse our freedom. But God in his goodness calls us to repentance. Many of the greatest saints in the history of the Church were sinners who initially said no to God, and who later changed their minds and said yes. St. Augustine is perhaps the most obvious example, but there are many others. A person will be judged not by a single act or stage in his life, but by his entire life. Ezekiel 18: Each of us is responsible for his or her own conduct, and will be judged accordingly. Philippians 2:1-5. Self-seeking and rivalry have no place in the Christian community. We must imitate the humility of Christ. Matthew 2: Actions speak louder than words. The parable of the two sons was addressed in the chief priests and elders of the people. Its purpose was to defend Jesus invitation of sinners and outcasts to the Kingdom, in the face of the sneers of the religious establishment. The parable outraged the religious people. The first son represents sinners. Like him they originally chose to go their own way, but then repented and took God s way. In this way they gained entry into the Kingdom. The second son represents the chief priests and elders. Like him they promised to work for God, but failed to do so. In this way they excluded themselves from the Kingdom. Repentance is a necessary disposition for entry into the Kingdom. (The theme of sin and repentance is also dealt with in the First Reading.) The parable also echoes a favorite theme of Matthew: the split in the religious person between saying and doing. For this reason the parable has continued relevance for religious people in every age. The parable teaches us that promises can never take the place of performance, and fine words can never be a substitute for fine deeds. Faithfulness is one of the greatest and most necessary things in life. But faithfulness is costly. It is not an easy road. It demands unselfishness and a spirit of sacrifice. But even here on earth it brings great rewards in terms of growth, serenity and joy. EL TEMA DE HOY ES LOS DOS HIJOS: LA DIFERENCIA ENTRE DECIR Y HACER Nosotros tenemos la libertad de decir "sí" o "no" a Dios. Pero esto significa que somos responsables de nuestras acciones. A veces nosotros abusamos nuestra libertad. Pero Dios, en su bondad, nos llama al arrepentimiento. 4 Vigésimo sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 28 de septiembre de 2014 FROM MY HEART (not from my Desk) I would like continue to express my gratitude to all of the parishioners of Saint Joseph. First of all, thank you to our Bishop Kevin Vann for celebrating and sharing with us the Eucharist last Sunday. He is a close and wonderful Shepherd. Today in a special way I would like to say THANK YOU to all the volunteers and families who brought food to the Parish Hall for the reception for Bishop Kevin Vann last weekend. My heart is also filled with gratitude for all of you who came to share in this gathering. It was so beautiful to have the parents and students from Saint Joseph School in the Mass with our Bishop. The Samoan community and both choirs gave of their time and talent to make the Mass especially beautiful. I offer a heart full of gratitude to Mrs. Nive Brown and Mrs. Betty Spanel for their generous sharing of time and talent during this wonderful occasion. My second highlight of this week was the beginning of Faith Formation classes. I am very grateful to all the catechists, all the parents and all the students in our Faith Formation program. Fr. Philip told me we had wonderful attendance at the first day of classes. I am very happy and grateful for this wonderful beginning. Your participation is a very positive sign of your love and interest in this important part of our Catholic life. Please remember that all of you are welcome here at St. Joseph; this is your home, and our parish and school are one family in faith, love and hope. My third expression of special gratitude is for all the ministries in Saint Joseph. Thank you for your generous gifts of time, treasure and talent every single week. Efrain Blessing of the Animals/Bendición de los animals Come and have your pets blessed on Saturday, October 4, at 12:00 p.m., celebrating the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. We will gather in the front yard of the rectory (to the side of the church). This will be both a prayerful and fun-filled family event. All pets need to be leashed or in a cage or carrier, with current required vaccination, and owners need to have control of their pets at all times.
