It can be a noun or a pronoun (a word that replaces a noun such as él or ella). El señor Garza es profesor de español. Él es de España. Mr. Garza is a Spanish teacher. He is from Spain. The verb is the action the subject is performing or the word that connects the subject to a description (a word like soy/eres/es). Alicia es estudiante. Yo soy de México. Alicia is a student.
