1 Dear Family, Today my class started the Add and Subtract Decimals chapter. I will explore addition and subtraction problems that contain decimals. I will also learn how to estimate sums and differences. Below are my vocabulary words for this chapter. Love, P.S. Look on the back of this letter to find activities we can do at home or in the car. There is also a list of books for us to read. Vocabulary Associative Property of Addition: the way in which numbers are grouped does not change the sum (3 + 4) + 5 = 3 + (4 + 5) Commutative Property of Addition: the order in which numbers are added does not change the sum = decimal: a number that has digits in the tenths place, hundreths place, and beyond difference: the result of a subtraction problem 18-6 = 12 difference estimate: to make an approximate calculation by using numbers that are easier to solve mentally = 14-6 = 8 So, is about 8. Identity Property of Addition: the sum of any number and 0 equals the number = 4 or = 4 sum: the result of an addition problem = 30 sum

2 At Home Activity Materials: grocery store advertisement, paper, pencil Give your student a grocery store advertisement. Tell your student to make a grocery list with a budget of $20. The grocery list must include each item and its price. Have your student add the prices of each item to find a total. If the total is greater than $20, remove items from the list until the total is less than $20. Then calculate how much money is left of the $20 budget. Travel Talk While driving in the car, look for signs that indicate the cost of a gallon of unleaded gasoline and a gallon of diesel fuel. Ask your student to calculate the difference between the two costs. Lay down matches : a problem card and its correct answer card. Have the first player randomly choose a card from the player to his or her left. If the card creates a match, the first player lays the match down. If not, the card remains in his or her hand. Continue to play until all matches have been laid down. The person left holding the Shasta! card is the loser.
