University of California, Berkeley Department of Spanish and Portuguese Spanish 3 - FALL 2015 Instructor: E- mail: Office # : Office hours: Course Description The primary goal of Spanish 3 is the development of written and oral skills beyond the level attained in Spanish 2 in order to fully prepare you for the requirements of higher- level Spanish courses. In beginning- intermediate Spanish you will gain and deepen your formal knowledge of grammatical structures and increase your active vocabulary, as well your ability to recognize words on sight, so that you are able to communicate orally and in writing at a more sophisticated and complex level. In addition, you will increase your ability to understand and read critically by summarizing and analyzing both literary and non- literary prose. Grammar is not taught explicitly in the classroom. Students are expected to study the grammar topics on their own and come prepared to class. Class time is to be used primarily for oral communication practice and Spanish will be spoken 99% of the time. PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS REQUIRES TEN OUTSIDE HOURS OF PREPARATION EACH WEEK (IN ADDITION TO THE FIVE WEEKLY IN- CLASS HOURS). IF YOU DO NOT ANTICIPATE HAVING TEN OUTSIDE HOURS TO DEVOTE TO THIS CLASS THIS SEMESTER, PLAN TO TAKE IT AT ANOTHER TIME. Materials Required: Gallego Smith, Olga. et al. Más allá de las palabras. 2nd ed. Gallego Smith, Olga. et al. Más allá de las palabras: Activities Manual, 2nd ed. We strongly recommend you purchase the custom version of the textbook, which contains the Activities Manual, all in one shrink- wrapped package. The custom version is available at the Student Store at 2480 Bancroft (no to be confused with the Cal Student Store at 2560 Bancroft, which does not carry the custom version). Additional readings and activities on bcourses. Recommended: Harper Collins Spanish Concise Dictionary Spanish/Spanish Dictionary (Any edition) 1

Policies and Requirements A. Accommodations Any student who feels that s/he may need an accommodation based on a disability should bring the proper documentation from the DSP Office (César Chávez Student Center) and discuss his or her specific needs privately with the instructor within the first 15 days of class. B. Attendance This course meets five days a week and strict attendance is required. Absences and tardiness will adversely affect your grade. If you miss one class during the first two weeks you will be dropped from the course. If necessary, after the second week of classes, you may be absent three times during the semester with no effect on your grade. Each absence beyond the three allowed absences will result in a 2% deduction from your final grade. Two tardies will count as one absence. A student with twelve or more absences will receive an F in the course. If you are sick, you must submit a doctor s note the day you return to class. If you are an athlete or musician, you must present an official letter written by your coach during the second week of classes with the dates you expect to be absent. C. Participation Your participation/oral proficiency grade is worth 10% of the final grade. Oral proficiency (5%) means accuracy in language use: pronunciation, syntax, variety of grammatical structures and vocabulary. Your instructor will assign this grade at the end of the semester, based on your progress. Participation (5%) means not just attending class, but also being prepared and on task, speaking only Spanish in class, volunteering answers, engaging in pair and group discussions, listening to what other students have to say, making informal mini- presentations. You will evaluate your own participation every day on a form called the Hoja de participación, using the Self- Evaluation Guide reproduced below. Your instructor will collect this form on the days indicated in the syllabus (usually Fridays) and return it to you the following Monday. Your instructor will lower or raise your participation grade if s/he considers your self- evaluation inaccurate. It follows that tardiness and absences will negatively affect your participation grade, as will a lack of preparation. Self- Evaluation Guide 0 Absent or in class, but speaks English 1 In class for entire period, but falls asleep or is otherwise inattentive 2 In class, but does not participate; or arrives late or leaves early 3 In class for 100% of class time, participates in small group activities, but does not participate voluntarily in class discussions 4 In class 100% of class time, preparation is evident, participates voluntarily in small group activities and class discussions 2

5 In class for 100% of class time, preparation is evident, participates voluntarily in small group activites and class discussions, language use is of very good quality, clear communication of ideas. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, as they are part of the process of learning a foreign language. D. Homework This category includes studying the grammar topics and completing the readings and exercises from the text and Activities Manual. Each day s assignments are indicated in the syllabus and should be completed before class that day, unless otherwise indicated by your instructor. You should also complete any other activities assigned in class by your instructor. There are two types of assignments: 1. Más allá de las palabras () In this course you are required to study grammar on your own. All grammatical topics in your textbook are indicated in the syllabus and should be studied before class. You should also study the vocabulary for every chapter, complete readings and assigned exercises. During class you will work on communicative activities: discussions, conversations, pair and group work. You will be expected to apply the grammar topics and vocabulary to all classroom activities and writing assignments. 2. Activities Manual You are required to complete all the assigned grammar and audio activities from Activities Manual before class, as indicated in the syllabus. The audio activities may be completed either at the BLC (Berkeley Language Center, in the basement of Dwinelle Hall) or online at home. Instructions for accessing the audio activities online: Click on Go to For Students: Online Language Lessons. Enter the Username (Berkeley) Enter Passphrase (BLC=languages) (case- sensitive, no spaces) Instructions for completing the Activities Manual: Complete all activities assigned in the syllabus, unless otherwise indicated by your instructor. One Redacción activity, indicated in the syllabus, is assigned per chapter. It must by typed, at least 10 lines long, turned in on a separate page, stapled to the top of your chapter packet. Self- correct all activities (except the Redacción ) in a different color ink. You will find the Answer Key on bcourses. On the menu at the left, click on Files and Activities Manual. Grading scale is 1-10 for each chapter packet, based on the completion of assigned activities, self- correction and careful development of the "Redacción." The Redacción is worth 0-3 points. If you do not hand it in you will receive a 0. The self- corrected activities are worth 0-7 points. If you do not hand them, do not correct your work, or do not use a different color ink for your corrections, you will receive 0 points. See syllabus for due dates. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. 3

3. Grammar Review (Repaso) There will be three days of grammar review at the beginning of the course: Día 1: usos de SER/ESTAR en presente y pasado y conjugación de pretérito e imperfecto Día 2: contraste entre pretérito e imperfecto Día 3: comparativos (Semana 7, viernes) Documents are on bcourses in the folder entitled Repaso Study the grammar topics for each day and do the exercises assigned by your instructor. Jot down any questions you might have and be sure to ask them in class. You are expected to master these grammatical concepts before starting with the new material. E. Quizzes In addition to the unit exams (see G), there will be five quizzes during the semester, focusing on discrete grammar points. These quizzes will evaluate grammar accuracy based on the grammar topics studied in your textbook. See syllabus for dates. Quizzes will take place during the first 10 minutes of class. YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN MORE TIME IF YOU ARRIVE LATE; THERE WILL BE NO MAKE- UP QUIZZES. F. Writing Workshops and Assignments There will be three writing workshops designed to develop and practice skills that will help you better express yourself in written Spanish. On each scheduled Writing Workshop day you will use the material provided by your instructor to practice a particular skill. Your writing workshop grade for each session will be either 1 point or 0 points, based on attendance and preparation. To earn the writing workshop point, you must attend AND come prepared. Your instructor will then present you with written instructions for a short writing assignment, which will allow you to practice the skills you learned in class; you will have at least three days to complete the writing assignments listed below. 1. Description vs. Critical Analysis: Mural chicano (1 page, 50 pts.) 2. Summary vs. Critical Analysis: cuento No Speak English (1 ½ pages, 50 pts.) 3. Comparative Essay: (2 ½ - 3 pages, 100 pts.) película También la lluvia. Version 1 (2 ½ - 3 pages, 50 pts.) Version 2 (2 ½ - 3 pages, 50 pts.) Please note that the third essay has two versions, each worth 50 points. If you receive points on the first version, you will have the OPTION of not turning in the second version. In this case, the same grade will be entered for the second version. YOUR SECOND VERSION MAY NOT EARN MORE THAN THREE POINTS MORE THAN THE ORIGINAL GRADE. THEREFORE, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU WORK HARD ON THE FIRST VERSION. PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT REVISED VERSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT THE FIRST VERSION GRADED BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR. TURN IN THE REVISED VERSION, STAPLED TO THE TOP OF THE ORIGINAL VERSION IF YOU DO NOT TURN IN THE FIRST VERSION WHEN IT IS DUE, YOU WILL RECEIVE 0/100 POINTS FOR THIS ESSAY. Please read and follow these instructions regarding the Spanish department s policy on academic integrity: Students are not allowed to seek outside help in any form for writing assignments. Students may not use electronic translators. A bilingual dictionary is permissible. 4

Published material produced by another person may be used, as long as the author is cited. Students must read the University's policy regarding academic dishonesty, provided by the instructor. Students must sign the academic honesty pledge and turn in it to the instructor at the first Writing Workshop. Turning in any work that is not entirely the student s own will result in an F for that assignment and possibly an F in the course. A student engaging in academic dishonesty may also be reported to The Center for Student Conduct, which may impose additional sanctions. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. G. Unit Exams There will be three unit exams. THERE ARE NO EARLY OR MAKE- UP EXAMS. The dates are announced in advance and noted in the Syllabus. Exams are both discrete point and performance based. They will include vocabulary, composition writing, and grammar topics selected from those covered in the current or past units. In preparation you should review your work each day and not wait until the night before the exam. All unit tests are comprehensive, although each one will emphasize the material covered since the previous exam. H. Mini oral presentations and Final Oral Presentation Will be required to prepare one or more informal oral group presentations to help prepare you for your Final Oral Presentation (8 minutes), which will be individual (see syllabus for exact days). Your presentation will be based on an interview of a Hispanic person, in which your objective will be to find out about this person's experience in the U.S. and relate it, wherever possible, to the topics covered in class. You will receive written instructions for the interview and presentation during Week 5. In the meantime, you should be thinking about the person you would like to interview. I. Written Final Exam The final exam, like the unit exams, will be comprehensive and will include material from all assigned sources. The final exam requires you to apply the grammar, vocabulary and concepts studied throughout the semester in specific contexts. If you require special accommodation for the final exam it is your responsibility to talk to your instructor during the first week of classes. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS COURSE IF YOU HAVE COMMITMENTS THAT CONFLICT WITH THE FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE. THE DEPARTMENT DOES NOT GIVE EARLY FINAL EXAMINATIONS. NO EXCEPTIONS. Final Exam Group 10: WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16 11:30-2:30 PM 5

Verification in the form of a hard copy of your final exam schedule will be required and you will have to present a picture ID on the day of the conflict exam. Please keep the above information in mind when enrolling in your course and when making your vacation or travel plans. NO EARLY EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN FOR ANY REASON.
