FMPS News & Science Symposium FMPS 101: Intro to Investing in Our Schools Once again September has arrived and with it those changes from sunscreen to packing lunches, from family vacations to homework help. As busy parents, you may not have heard of the Foundation for Madison s Public Schools (FMPS). Maybe you have but just aren t sure how it helps your school. FMPS brings alumni, parents, friends, corporations and even other foundations together to create opportunities that privately support our schools, inspiring every student to excel. Through the Foundation s work, we have invested millions in our schools to support students in all of Madison s public schools. From academics to athletics and field trips to scholarships, FMPS funds opportunities to create a brighter future for every student in our public schools. Through our numerous grants and school endowments, we provide resources to support quality education through innovative programs and imaginative approaches. Through our passthrough funds, FMPS has helped build school playgrounds, ensure students have access to dental care, and provided free breakfasts to students in need. As we embark on the new school year, FMPS commitment to enriching the educational experiences of all students continues, and we are eager to expand our efforts by building even stronger partnerships. To learn more about FMPS and our many programs, visit www.fmps.org, email fmps@fmps.org, or call any of the Foundation staff at (608) 232-7820. Middle School Science Symposium The Madison Middle School Science Symposium, established during the 2010-11 school year, has been designed to give all students at each of the 12 Madison middle schools the chance to participate in an authentic science research symposium. As individuals, pairs, or groups of three, with the guide of a mentor, students follow the inquiry process, conducting a science research project of their choosing, over a period of several months. On the day of the symposium, students meet, share, and discover the joys and challenges of conducting independent, scientific, research. This year, the Symposium will be held on April 25, 2013. Students can apply to this program from October 1-19, 2012. A link to the application, a video about the event, and additional information on the program can be found on the MMSD s website: https://scienceweb.madison.k12.wi.us/node/1038. - 8 -

Misc. News.. All Call for Two or Preferably Three-Inch-Ring Binders! Cherokee School is continuing to create a school-wide system for all students to be school-ready. Although teachers still have the prerogative to ask students to purchase a three-ring binder or other supplies for their class, many teachers in all three grades are using the one binder approach: one-binder (one two-inch binder or even better three-inch binder with subject dividers labeled for each class.) A pencil pouch at the front of the binder completes the school-ready ensemble. Voila! Students are good to go! Here s our request: that if there are any two- or three-inch binders lying around your house or basement that are not being used, that you consider donating them to Cherokee s school-ready efforts. Just get them to one of your child s teachers, a homebase teacher would be great, and know that you have helped our school in its efforts to lessen the achievement gap. Donations of all school supplies are always appreciated, but in this case, we know that the large two- or three-inch binders that are going unused at your house could seriously aid our efforts. Lightly used binders or zippered trapper keepers NOT BEING USED by your family are what we are after. Please consider donating today! Thank you! Call Ms. Hamann at 204-1285 with any questions. Art Room Help Wanted Got any extra time to volunteer at Cherokee Middle School? We need you. Always looking for an extra set of hands to come in, volunteer and help out. No art skills necessary. Contact Ms. Mietzel, amietzel@madison.k12.wi.us if you are interested. Picture Retakes Retakes for school pictures will be taken on Wednesday, October 17 between 10:00 1:00 pm. Students who would like to order a different picture packet, missed the previous picture days, or enrolled after the start of the school year need to get their pictures taken. The pictures will be used: (1) for the student's school picture (purchasing a package is optional), and (2) for the yearbook. Order forms, which contain prices, and picture and package options, are available in the Cherokee Main Office. Please have your child come prepared with payment and an order form. There is no charge for retakes; however, the student needs to bring the previous packet in with him/her at the time the new picture is taken. - 11 -

I m seeking volunteers to help with the following tasks: Check in and shelve books Receive in new magazines Repair materials Process new books Create displays Work on special projects The time you give will keep the LMC running smoothly and contribute positively to the learning environment for staff and students. Please call me or email me if you have questions or would like to volunteer. Your help will be greatly appreciated by all of us! Focus on Reading: Reading Enrichment Opportunities Newbery Discussion Group is open to sixth-graders who are interested in reading and discussing the best and the newest in children s books. In January, we will vote on which of the books we believe is most deserving of the Newbery Award for Outstanding Children s Books. We don t have any influence on the real Newbery Committee, but we have lots of fun making a case for our favorites. (October January 2009) Battle of the Books, open to students in grades 6-8, is a reading enrichment program that will begin in late November. Students read a wide selection of books over a three-month period, and then test their knowledge of them in a friendly trivia competition with other teams. The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to read, to get them talking about books, and to expose them to books from different genres. I will be visiting classrooms in November to talk to students about the program. (November March) Laura Holt Librarian lholt@madison.k12.wi.us 204-1260 - 12 -

Dear Cherokee Families, Cherokee PTO YOUR School, YOUR Students, YOUR Teachers, and YOUR PTO Need your Help! Please Contribute to the Cherokee PTO Every year the Cherokee PTO provides invaluable financial support to our school. Examples of this support include: Grants to facilitate creative learning opportunities in classrooms. Examples: West African drumming performance group, white boards, violins, JobSmart workshops for staff, the Garden Gallery, Project R2M (Read to Me) and Literary/arts magazine. These are things that would have gone unfunded if it weren't for the PTO. Funds to help teachers supply their classrooms. Funds to subsidize enrichment and social programs such as the school directory, Math Fest and the 8 th grade celebration. Our teachers work so hard for our students AND spend their own money in their classrooms. We would like to continue this high level of financial support to our teachers, so we need everyone's participation! The PTO generates funds through fundraising and through direct contributions. We are trying to focus our fundraisers around products that you would already buy in your day-to-day lives. If you have a different idea for fundraising, your PTO would love to hear it! Listed below are a few of the fundraising events planned for 2012-13: Magazine Sales - $2,000 goal Bucky Books - $500 goal Cookie Dough Sale (Spring) - $1,000 goal Box Tops for Education - $500 goal In the coming weeks and months, you will be receiving separate information explaining more details about each fundraiser. Thank you for supporting these efforts through your participation. Some families prefer to bypass participation in Cherokee PTO fundraisers and simply choose to make a generous donation. Please use the form below to contribute to reach our goals! Thank you for your support!
