by Brady Hayes Build Background Read the title to children and ask them what they see in the cover photograph. Help children think about what the child is doing. Build interest with questions such as this: Qué cosas pueden hacer ustedes? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book tells about things children can do. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 2 del libro. Qué ven? Esta niña puede tocar el piano. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Help children understand the concept of a sentence as a group of words with ending punctuation. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Rhyming Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme and keep their hands in their laps if they don t. Say pairs of words, including: tocar and puedo; tocar and secar; cantar and atar; bailar and correr; leer and comer; pintar and comprar, etc. ABC Order Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children choose letters and put them in ABC order. Build Sentences Materials: index cards. Write the repeated words from on index cards: yo, puedo. Then write the content words on index cards: tocar, cantar, bailar, leer, tomar, pintar. Have children build sentences using the word cards. Have them read the sentences and illustrate them if they wish. 3 Lesson 26:

Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulario questions on Hoja reproducible 26.1. Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Things We Can Do Build on the action words in Suggested language: Pensemos en todo lo que pueden hacer los niños en. As children suggest different things they can do, write their words on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with: Yo puedo. (Possible suggestions: correr, saltar, escribir, construir, jugar al béisbol, hornear, escribir, etc.) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word.
