3 Dear Parents, I understand that in the past, the students would bring home packets of pages to cut, color and write on to practice what they are learning in class for their homework. I am going to change the homework procedure. I am attaching a list of activity ideas for all three areas of study: reading, math, and writing from which you and your child can choose together to practice their skills. There are several reasons I would like you to choose from a menu of activities instead of doing packets. It is developmentally appropriate: First of all, research has clearly shown that children (especially young children like kindergarteners) are able to learn and remember information better when interacting with another person, especially a caring adult. It gives flexibility for families: Many of these activities can be done at any moment; in the car, while cooking dinner, right before bed, etc. Homework at the kindergarten level should not take a long time or cause stress within the family. It can become a predictable routine: Soon, you and your child will know all the activities well and will be able to complete them quickly and meaningfully. You will be able to know when your child needs more practice with something and choose to work on that skill. Thus becoming a more empowered educational partner with me (the teacher) and the other support staff in the school to enable your child to reach grade level standards. How to complete the homework: It is your choice on what you want to do, and how much you want to do! Just write down the number of activities completed each night (worth 1 star each) on the homework page that goes home each week. At the end of the week, write the total number of stars earned for homework that week. Your child will be able to put his or her name and their number on a star to put up on the classroom chart. That s it! I will post links on our class website for videos (like the count to 100 exercise song we like to do in class) or other websites with great ideas for how to make those activities new and interesting. If you have any questions or comments, there will be a space for you to write those on the homework page each week. But you can always contact me via , phone or in person. Sincerely, Brianne Yorlang
Gracias! Atentamente: Brianne Yorlang
