A report detailing our progress from our 2007 accreditation visit is also included. The visiting team will report its findings at the end of its visit on Wednesday, March 20, in the PAC cafeteria at 3 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Snacks will be provided. 5 Testing Update The spring testing season for our students begins in March with the High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) being given to all sophomores on Tuesday, March 12 (English), and Wednesday, March 13 (math). The school schedule will change slightly for CAHSEE testing, as Wednesday, March 13, will not be a block day. Instead, all periods from 0 through 6 will meet that day, with 0 period starting at 7:50 and period 1 at 8:45. The normal Wednesday block schedule will take place on Friday, March 15, with school beginning at 9:25 and periods 1, 3, and 5 meeting. Please make a note of this on your calendar. For CAHSEE testing, all sophomores will be assigned a room where they will report by 8:45 am on both testing days. They will be notified of room assignments the week before testing, and they will go to the same room on both days. Teachers of sophomores will proctor the tests. Because many classes have mixed grade levels, the impact of testing will be felt throughout the school. Non-sophomore students whose teachers will be proctoring the test will have to report to different rooms during the testing days. The affected students will be notified in the weeks before testing. The federal No Child Left Behind legislation establishes testing standards that all schools must meet, including a minimum attendance requirement of 95%. We therefore expect all sophomores to be at school on March 12 and 13. For the past few years we have been very successful in this we ve hit a 99% attendance mark and we know we can do the same this year. In addition, the state imposes performance standards that require over 80% of the students to perform at levels defined as proficient or advanced. Teachers and students are working hard to prepare for the test, and we need students to do their best on every question to validate this work. A letter will be sent to parents of all sophomores explaining CAHSEE testing in more detail, but if there are specific questions, please contact me at (650) , ext Once we finish the March CAHSEE, we begin gearing up for STAR testing in April. We have refined the schedule a bit, and testing will take place over two weeks only: the weeks of April 22 and 29. More detailed information will be provided in the April issue of TriVocis, but please note that during these two weeks on Wednesday and Thursday, April 24 and 25 and May 1 and 2 freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will begin testing at 8:45 am. There will be no late starts during these weeks. Seniors do not take STAR tests and will have different starting times on these days: 12:30 pm on April 24, 11 am on April 25 (senior meeting day), and 11 am on May 1 and 2. Other important testing dates to keep in mind for the spring include: Ø Physical fitness testing during March for all freshmen. Ø The Early Assessment Program essay test to determine readiness for the California State University system will be given to all juniors in English classes during March. Ø AP testing will take place during the weeks of May 6 and May 13. Ø Final exams for nonseniors will take place the week of June 3. Steve Lippi, instructional vice principal TriVocis March

Steve Lippi, sub-director educativo 6 March 2013 TriVocis

8 From the Guidance Office registration for classes Guidance counselors have met with most of their students to register for classes for the academic year. Spring registration is very important for the following reasons: Ø The master schedule is largely determined by this registration. Ø Some classes fill up quickly. There will be less flexibility to make schedule changes later on. Ø Your student may be assigned to certain intervention classes to support him or her academically next year. Please note that in order for students to be placed in AS algebra II or AS chemistry, they must complete both semesters of geometry by August 5, Summer school Please remember to visit the Infinite Campus portal site at to check your student s academic progress. If necessary, use this time to consider the options available to students who need to make up an F or a D grade. Each quarter M-A staff and students honor students who have been nominated by staff members for going above and beyond what is expected in and out of the classroom. Although they are nominated for a wide variety of reasons, all the students share one quality: they are positive role models for their fellow classmates. We are enrolling students for the second spring session to prep for the May or June SAT. The first session this semester has already begun. We offer a fiveweek class, on campus, from 3:30 to 5 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, with a likely starting date of April 1. Our fee, based on the number enrolled, ranges from $100 to $225 and includes all necessary materials. (We have charged the top fee only once in our history dating back to 1980.) Once a student is seated in the class, the parent or guardian is responsible for the fee. We will also have a waiting list for sophomores who have a fall sport that precludes their taking a PSAT prep just before the PSAT is given next fall. The PSAT happens only once a year, in October, and all juniors ought to take it as it is aimed at juniors, not sophomores. 10 Career Center Winter and early spring are the height of the scholarship season. One incredibly rewarding part of my job is to connect students with scholarships for college. What are these scholarships, and who receives them? In addition to federal, state, and institutional funds (financial aid), our students receive scholarships from state and national organizations, foundations, and corporations (McDonald s, PG&E, Comcast, etc.), from local organizations, foundations, and corporations (Rotary, Kiwanis, Atherton Police, AAUW, Peninsula College Fund, Pursuit of Excellence, etc.), and even from individuals. Local scholarship opportunities provide the most fertile ground, because our students compete with fewer other applicants. I am especially excited about scholarships donated by generous individuals within our community. The donors are not necessarily wealthy people just people who would like to make a difference. One M-A grad funded two students with an $8,000 gift; her father s company matched it! Another M-A grad offers scholarships each year to students who are committed to social justice. A local couple decided to give back to the community where the husband has built a successful business; that couple has helped M-A grads now for quite a few years with $5,000 scholarships. Yet another local individual designates $500 every year for a student who plans to become a teacher. Generous local donors offer several $1,000 and $2,000 scholarships to students who will attend local community colleges. The M-A Alumni Association offers a scholarship for graduating seniors. Some scholarships come with mentors and follow-up as part of the deal! Who ends up with the money? The ideal scholarship recipient has the magic combination of low income and high achievement, but students at any point on the family income and GPA spectrum can end up with scholarships if they are assertive and willing to put in time and energy. Seniors are aware that I update a list of scholarships each week. The list is posted in the Career Center and all senior English classrooms as well as on my Web site, and a weekly through Naviance reminds students about scholarships on the list. Smart seniors check the list weekly. Seniors also know that I m glad to review their scholarship applications before they send them. Students can also be nominated for scholarships by M-A s Scholarship Committee, which consists of our six guidance counselors plus teachers from each department and me. This eighteen-person group meets once a year and confers by frequently to determine recipients for scholarships that require school nomination. Scholarship winners are proudly acknowledged on Awards Night just before graduation. Alice Kleeman 10 March 2013 TriVocis

16 Boosters grant record amount Thanks to the generosity of the supporters of the Menlo-Atherton Athletic Boosters, the group was able to grant more than $120,000 in coaching stipends, uniforms, and sports equipment to our athletic teams. The Boosters met in January and approved more than $50,000 in requests, including seven coaches, uniforms for two teams, and additional equipment for eight teams. As always, these grants are possible through generous donations and sponsorship of the Big Bear Run. This year s run will take place May 5, and you still have time to have your family or company included in our list of sponsors. See the article on the next page. Visit m-aboosters.org/donor-level-and-benefits for more information. M-A athletes commit to colleges Menlo-Atherton had its share of athletes announcing their college commitments on Letter-of-Intent Day, Wednesday, February 6. Those Bears included Dana Gornick (Cal Poly SLO, soccer), Evan Perkins (Princeton, football), Ali Spindt (UCSB, volleyball), Laura May (Cal, crew), Emily Carlson (Claremont McKenna, lacrosse), Brian Kelley (Trinity College, soccer), and Katelyn Doherty (Bowdoin, volleyball). Congratulations to these and the many other athletes who will continue their athletic careers after they graduate. Winter sports wrap-up Congratulations to the hard-working athletes on all the winter sports teams! The season ended with several teams qualifying for the PAL and CCS playoffs: Ø Boys basketball qualified for both the PAL and the CCS tournaments. They fell to eventual PAL champion Westmoor in the first round and fought hard before coming up short to Wilcox in the first round of the CCS. Ø Girls basketball defeated Independence in the first round of the CCS before falling to Milpitas. They finished fifth in the PAL. Ø After finishing fourth in the PAL, the girls soccer team hosted a CCS game for the first time in eighteen years. They defeated Leland and will meet Woodside in the next round. Ø The boys soccer team also finished fourth in the PAL. They entered the CCS ranked twelfth and lost to Mountain View in round one. Ø The wrestling team sent seven teammates to the PAL finals, and five qualified for CCS, with one qualifying as an alternate. Congratulations to Austin Wilson (who finished first in his weight class), Sam Stroud (second), James Smith (third), Josh Buttram, (third), Donald LaHaye (third), and Hector Santana (fourth). Winter Sports Awards Night, March 6 The Menlo-Atherton Athletic Boosters cordially invites all winter sports athletes, their families, and fans to the Winter Sports Awards Night on Wednesday, March 6, in the Performing Arts Center beginning at 7 pm. This entertaining event honors all winter sports athletes for their season accomplishments and is highlighted by the popular M-A sports slide show. Don t miss it! 16 March 2013 TriVocis

17 8th Annual Big Bear Run Sunday, May 5, 2013, 9:00 am Last Call for Sponsors! March 15 Deadline to Be on Banners and T-Shirts The Big Bear Run is more than a 5k race. It is a fun-filled community event and the core fundraiser for Menlo-Atherton athletics. Gathering families, neighbors, students, athletes, and businesses together, the race focuses on our common goal of supporting our school and sending the word out to the community that the Bears mean business! Celebrating our eighth annual race this year on Sunday, May 5, we anticipate well over 1,200 registered participants, making the Big Bear Run one of the community s most popular events. Every year, M-A Athletic Boosters grants over $90,000 to fund the basic needs of teams and support more than nine hundred committed student-athletes. This effort ensures that our diverse student body benefits from an excellent education in and out of the classroom. Last year, the Big Bear Run raised enough money to purchase $36,000 in uniforms, $30,000 in basic equipment and training supplies, and $62,000 in coaches stipends. Without this baseline support, the continuity of these enriching athletic programs will be compromised. The Big Bear Run fills the gap between basic state funding and the reality of our athletes promise. Please join the Boosters and go to m-aboosters.org to make a donation and become a Big Bear Run Sponsor. We are currently looking for corporate and family sponsors, with a March 15 deadline for sponsors names to be on banners and T-shirts. Details on sponsorship levels are outlined on the next page. Contact Marci Coggins at cogginshouse@aol.com for more sponsorship information. Contact Big Bear Run cochairs Dana Hayse (dana_hayse@me.com) and Diana Holliday (dianaholliday@me.com) for event questions Thank you to all the families who have already generously donated! Any contributions made from August 1, 2012, to May 5, 2013, will be counted as donations to the 2013 Big Bear Run with full sponsorship benefits. TriVocis March
