At Highline Community School we are focusing on two main topics right now. The first topic is implementing a school-wide learning schedule that ensures every student engaging in reading, writing, math, science and social studies that matches their grade level every day. The second main topic is students learning content that is appropriate to the grade level. To define what is appropriate to the grade level all Cherry Creek Schools are using Common Core. Common Core is a national set of learning expectations for each grade. Please talk to your child s teacher to learn specifics about current learning. As we start this school year, we also look at how we have done in meeting our achievement and growth goals in ensuring every child grows academically and personally. One source that we use is the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) results for third, fourth and fifth grade students. An Improvement assignment is the second highest rating that a school can obtain. This is the same as last year. All Cherry Creek Schools have either an Improvement assignment or the highest assignment of Performance. This year we will sustain our work in reading, math and science. We will emphasize our work in writing. Common Core and TCAP requires students to Persevere and Sustain academic work. At Highline Community School, we talk with students frequently about the E in C.A.R.E.S. which is Excellence. As you work with your children on their daily homework, please talk with them about your vision of them doing Excellence on their homework and in the classroom. 3 Emergency Response and Crisis Management in the Cherry Creek Schools As a result of funds received from an Emergency Response and Crisis Management (ERCM) grant from the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, all leadership and school safety/crisis teams in the Cherry Creek Schools have been receiving ERCM. We have developed updated and effective emergency response plans and procedures that align with state and federal Homeland Security Emergency Management and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Cherry Creek Schools has improved communications with our community agencies, trained key staff to provide for the emotional impact of a crisis on students and staff, and developed sustainable training materials and crisis response kits for our schools. In 2011 the ERCM process has changed to Readiness Emergency Management for Schools (REMS). We are committed to continuing this effort with REMS training. We would also like to take this opportunity to inform parents about recent changes to the Cherry Creek Website that now give parents needed information about school safety and related issues. The website explains the district s efforts to provide for both the physical and psychological safety of our children, and gives parents links to excellent on-line resources. This section of the district website continues to be under construction and materials will be updated as needed. You can view the information by going to and selecting the Safety & Security Quick Links. 5 Individual Picture Day Individual student pictures will be taken on October, 1 st for K, 1 st, and 2 nd grade and October 2 nd, for 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th grades. All students will have their picture taken, but ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE PRE-PAID WILL RECEIVE PICTURES. Please complete and return to your child s teacher the order form with payment for the packet you wish to receive. FOTOS INDIVIDUALES! The State Count period is September 25 October 4, 2013 with the count day of October 1st. School funding by the state is determined on a per student attendance ratio during this time. This funding amounts to about $6,000 per student so absences during this time will have a dramatic impact. Please make every attempt for your child to attend school every day during this time. We also ask that students arrive on time and that appointments during school hours be kept to a minimum.
