3 June West Temple St. Los Angeles, CA FAREWELL FATHER FRANCIS MENDOZA Dear Cathedral Family For the past four years, Fr. Francis has graced the Cathedral s sacred spaces showing us the way to Jesus Christ. When he arrived on that first Sunday in July 2007, I presented him with a large towel, embroidered with the words, Foot Washer Francis. His ministry was to wash the feet of the Cathedral community. In his love and care for the liturgy of the Church, in his preparations as Presider, Homilist, Teacher, Confessor, in his outreach to Young Adults, RCIA, Faith Formation, Cathedral Volunteers, Parishioners and Pilgrims, Fr. Francis leaves a towel well used and very worn. I am also personally grateful to Fr. Francis for his priestly and brotherly care in welcoming Archbishop José Gomez and helping ease Cardinal Mahony into retirement. His gentle and kind spirit helped tremendously with these transitions. Fr. Francis last Sunday here at the Cathedral will be July 3rd, and a reception in his honor will be held after all the Masses. On July 4 th, Fr. Francis will commence his new ministry as Administrator Pro Tempore to the communities of St. Columbkille and Nativity Parishes in South Los Angeles. To Fr. Angel Castro was born in Guerrero, Mexico on October 1, He is the sixth of nine children. He began his seminary formation at the Semanario Hispano in Mexico City and completed his theological formation at St. John s Seminary in Camarillo. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 2008 in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. He has served the St. Columbkille and Nativity parishes in South Los Angeles as the Associate Pastor. DID YOU KNOW Know the Parent Warning Codes Text messaging is an increasingly integral part of the way young people communicate with their friends. But like other forms of communication, it can expose children to outside threats and unwanted contacts, even from sexual predators. That s why it is important for parents to monitor their child s use of text messaging. Young people are aware of their parents supervision and have developed text codes in response. These parent warning codes are codes that kids use to let whomever they are talking to know that it is not safe to talk. If you see these codes, you should instantly be suspicious. For more information or to request an application for CalFresh benefits, call , or visit CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS OUTREACH - A SUCCESS STORY Recently a call came in from the Los Angeles Pregnancy Center regarding a woman who was contemplating an abortion because of financial difficulties. The case worker asked if Cathedral Outreach could pay the woman s rent so she could avoid eviction. Deacon Gus Catipon, Director of Cathedral Outreach, asked the case worker to send the woman to the Cathedral Outreach Office for evaluation. The following day, the woman arrived and explained her difficult situation. After interviewing her and evaluating her situation, Deacon Gus was able to tell her that the Cathedral Outreach would help pay her rent for the month. Upon hearing the news, the woman wept with joy and gratitude as she realized she and her unborn child were not alone on their difficult journey. Through the resources of the Outreach Office, we were able to provide assistance at this difficult time. According to Deacon Gus, during challenging economic times more and more families with children seek assistance from the Cathedral Outreach Center. Most ask for help with rent, utilities, transportation, groceries and clothing. Without your generous support, the Cathedral Outreach could not assist them, and we thank you for your generous support.
