1 Bear Tracks Brewster School District April The Brewster School District would like to thank the Community of Brewster for their support. Passing a four year Education and Maintenance Levy replaces the previous two levy at a lower rate. A four year levy is a first for us and we believe it will be better for you, it will provide consistency for a longer period of time and as it turns out, at a better rate. Passing the levy also means State matching funds of $812,079. The Levy and State match will be used to maintain our current programs. These funds would not be possible without the support of our voting community. We are now able to continue moving in a positive direction for our students and community. Thank You. As you browse through this newsletter, remember you are an important part of allowing these types of activities to take place, your support helped make them happen. We have an amazing community and staff here in Brewster. Our staff is willing to go above and beyond to support our students and push them to be their best. Our community is beside them supporting the programs and volunteering to assist them in their work. The Chamber is doing amazing work to bring people into town, providing activities that are engaging everyone, and building unity and strength as a community. I believe our schools and our community are moving in a positive direction. I think we all want a great community to live in and great schools for our children to attend. It will continue to require all of our involvement in our community and our schools to maintain this positive direction. It is said, You can have the results you say you want, or you can have the reasons why you can t have them. But you can t have both. Reasons or results. We get to choose. Being involved helps us all get the results we want. A bumper sticker put out by the School District says Not just a Zip Code, It is an Attitude! This attitude is one of determination, hard work, team work and success. I think it provides a sense of pride in our Schools and Community. As a District we know we have work to do. Some students do not graduate on time and a few have dropped out completely. The addition of the Alternative school has helped many students in these types of circumstances and many more are graduating. Our State test scores are not where we want them to be, we are improving and continue to put programs in place to help students be successful. We now have about 80% of our 10th graders passing the Language Arts HSPE on the first attempt and our math scores are climbing. We are offering 10 College University classes that about 119 students are taking advantage of and will earn over 400 college credits, saving families over $40,000 in college expenses. Our focus is on learning and not just improving test scores. We are never satisfied, we are constantly striving to improve. As a member of this community and/or school system, you can be proud of the work that we are doing together. As cliché as it sounds, Together Everyone Achieves More or T.E.A.M., is something we believe in and this is one team (community and schools) that is willing to do whatever it takes to improve the learning and lives of our students! Haber pasado nuestro Impuesto Escolar de Educación y Mantenimiento de cuatro años cual sustituye al previo impuesto de los últimos dos años, y además este nuevo impuesto viene con una tarifa más baja que el impuesto anterior. Es la primera vez que nosotros tenemos un Impuesto Escolar de cuatro años y creemos que será mejor para usted, este impuesto va a proporcionar la consistencia durante un período de tiempo más largo y, como resultado, a una mejor tarifa. Pasando el impuesto escolar significa también fondos correspondientes del Estado de $812,079. Se dice, Usted puede tener los resultados que usted quiere, o puede tener las razones por las que no puede tener los resultados. Pero no se puede tener ambas cosas. Razones o resultados. Tenemos la oportunidad de elegir. Estando todos involucrados nos ayuda a obtener los resultados que queremos. Una estampa de imán que es difundida por el Distrito Escolar dice No es sólo un código postal, es una actitud Esta actitud es una de determinación, trabajo duro, trabajo en equipo y el éxito. Creo que proporciona un sentido de orgullo en nuestras escuelas y la comunidad. Como Distrito sabemos que tenemos trabajo por hacer. Algunos estudiantes no se gradúan a tiempo y algunos han abandonado por completo. La adición de la escuela alternativa ha ayudado a muchos estudiantes en este tipo de circunstancias, y muchos más se están graduando. Nuestros resultados de las pruebas estatales no están donde queremos que sean, estamos mejorando y seguimos poniendo en marcha programas para ayudar a los estudiantes a tener éxito. Ahora tenemos alrededor del 80% de nuestros alumnos del grado 10 que están pasando las pruebas del HSPE de lenguaje y literatura en el primer intento y nuestras calificaciones de matemáticas están subiendo. Estamos ofreciendo 10 cursos universitarios que alrededor de 119 estudiantes están actualmente aprovechando la oportunidad, y en total se lograran más de 400 créditos universitarios, esto ahorrara a las familias más de $40,000 en gastos universitarios. Nuestro enfoque esta centrado en el aprendizaje y no sólo en la mejoría de los resultados de las pruebas. Nunca estamos satisfechos, nos esforzamos constantemente por mejorar. 3 Teaching Our Parents Music! Enseñando a nuestros padres la Música! Ms. Potter s 1st grade students got the opportunity to teach their parents what they were learning in music last month. They have been learning about beat, rhythm, and how to read and compose music. Their parents were able to learn right alongside them for one day; they participated in different activities and even took part in a fun rhythm game. We had close to 12 parents join in the fun, and the kids were delighted that they were there. Thank you to those parents that were able to come learn with our students! We love having you involved in our school, and the kids absolutely LOVED watching you take part in the fun! Los estudiantes de 1 º grado de la Sra. Potter tuvieron la oportunidad de enseñar a sus padres lo que estaban aprendiendo en la clase de música el mes pasado. Ellos han estado aprendiendo sobre el compás, el ritmo y la forma de leer y componer música. Sus padres también fueron capaces de aprender junto a ellos por un día, de hecho todos participaron en distintas actividades e incluso participaron en un juego de ritmo divertido. Nos encanta tenerlos involucrados en nuestra escuela, ya que a los niños les encanta ver que tomen parte en la diversión! 3 Brewster Elementary Primaria de Brewster The Brewster Elementary Associated Student Body greeted the Mason s Bill Harris, Don McNett, and Ron Allard at their assembly Friday morning. The ASB officers and reps thanked these gentlemen for donating bikes to the Bikes for Books program. They have been donating bikes for years, and it really gives our students incentive to read. The students who have met their reading goal had their name entered into the drawing in the hope that they would be the winner of one of our two bikes. This year, kindergarten student Makaya Huff, and sixth grade ASB rep Ubaldo Arellano won the bikes. Our third grade teachers Margo Peck, Abbie Gebbers, Paula Spurr and Principal Lynnette Blackburn would like to thank the Mason s for sponsoring our 3rd grade pizza party this year as well. We really appreciate all that the Mason s do to support our school. 4 4 GEAR-UP Happenings... Acontecimientos de GEAR-UP... Super Study Saturday s In the month of March, GEARUP will be hosting two Super Study Saturday s for students to have some extra study time before the end of the 3rd quarter. Saturday March 15th and Saturday March 22nd the high school library will be open from 9am to 1pm. Students are encouraged to bring any and all assignments they may need help with; there will be tutors available to help in all subjects! Look forward to seeing your student there! AVID Student s Trip The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students are planning a visit to the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) Hanford in Richland WA. This observatory trip is going to help our students explore the world of science, by providing students with hands-on exhibits and STEM experiences. The 7th, 8th and 9th grade AVID students will go to visit LIGO on Thursday March 20th. AVID is a class that teaches students to reach their goals. GEARUP is excited to be a part of trips like this as we are always striving to help students reach their full potential. Kid Wind Challenge What is the: Kid Wind Challenge; it s the ultimate hands-on wind turbine design competition for students. And this year GEARUP is excited to be sending two teams to the challenge. We have our Jr. High science class and the High school Science club competing for the title of creating the best wind turbine, along with scholarship prize money up for grabs as well! This challenge is taking place at Central Washington University, on Saturday April 12th. Y este año GEARUP se complace en enviar a dos equipos para el desafío. Mandaremos a nuestra clase de ciencia y al Club de Ciencias quien ambos son de la escuela secundaria, van a competir por el título de la creación de la mejor turbina eólica, también estarán compitiendo por becas de dinero! Este desafío se llevará a cabo en la Universidad Central de Washington, el sábado 12 de abril. 5 Math Competitions Competiciones de Matemáticas On Monday, February 7, Brewster Elementary sent a team of 6th graders to compete in the regional Math is Cool competition. The competition consisted of an individual test and several different types of team tests where the team got to work together. The kids who competed were Maria Orozco, Carlos Garcia, Bryan Talavera, Giselle Aparicio, Daisy Perez, and Orlando Medina. They all did a wonderful job, and have been practicing after school for the competition since October. The team ranked 8th out of 20 teams, and Maria Orozco received the highest score on the individual test, placing 25th in our division of about 100 students. El día lunes 7 de febrero la Primaria de Brewster envió un equipo de estudiantes de 6to grado para competir en una competencia regional de matemáticas muy divertida. La competición consistió en una prueba individual y varios tipos de diferentes pruebas en equipo, donde requirió que el equipo trabajara junto. Los niños que compitieron fueron 5 María Orozco, Carlos García, Bryan Talavera, Giselle Aparicio, Margarita Pérez y Orlando Medina. Todos ellos hicieron un trabajo maravilloso, y han estado practicando después de la escuela para la competición desde octubre. Nuestro equipo logro el octavo lugar entre 20 equipos, y María Orozco recibió la puntuación más alta en la prueba individual, la colocación de 25 en nuestra división de cerca de 100 estudiantes. The Brewster Counseling Team This month the Brewster Counseling Team was able to attend the WSCA (Washington School Counselors Association) conference. This event is an excellent opportunity to learn about new trends in the school counseling field as well as brushing up on programs or ideas you may have heard in the past. The conference was held at the Seattle Airport Hilton and Conference Center and was brimming with people to meet and presenter booths to visit. There were many seminars dealing with varying arrays of topics from dealing with bullies and substance abuse to developing grit and unlocking potential. I know that after leaving the conference I was flush with new ideas to beef up the elementary schools PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system. I look forward to building up the counseling program here at Brewster Elementary School and continuing to foster an environment that cultivates student success. Kyle State, Counselor, Brewster Elementary School Este El Equipo de Consejería de Brewster mes el Equipo de Consejería de Brewster fue capaz de asistir a la conferencia WSCA (Asociación de Consejeros de las Escuelas de Washington). Este evento es una excelente oportunidad para aprender acerca de las nuevas tendencias en el campo de la orientación escolar y también fue un recordatorio sobre programas o ideas que ya aviamos aprendido en el pasado. La conferencia se celebró en el Centro de Conferencias del Hilton en Seattle, el lugar rebosaba de gente con exposiciones y presentadores a quienes acudir. Había muchos seminarios sobre diferentes conjuntos de temas que variaban desde cómo hacer frente a un agresor, el abuso de sustancias y sobre el desbloqueo de la potencial. Después de haber asistido a esta conferencia me siento renovado con nuevas ideas para reforzar el uso del sistema PBIS (Comportamiento Positivo intervenciones y apoyos) que actualmente se practica en la escuela primaria. Espero poder incrementar la construcción del programa de asesoramiento aquí en la Escuela Primaria de Brewster y continuar fomentando un ambiente que cultive el éxito de cada estudiante.

6 6 History Club Day is a regional, History state, and national event. The students attending these competitions have the choice of making a website, composing a documentary, creating an exhibit, or writing a paper that fits a given theme. This year s theme is Rights and Responsibilities. Dressing and acting in a professional manner is a must. Research is the main part of this project and accurately citing your sources. The judging criteria includes historical quality, relation to theme, clarity of presentation, and compliance to the rules. On February 22, 2014 thirteen Brewster Students traveled to Eastern Washington University, in Cheney. Two students will be advancing to state in May to Green River Community College in Auburn. The students advancing include Danny Carrillo placed first in the documentary competition and Kole Webster third place in the documentary competition. The following are quotes from this year s competitors: It was a great experience; I encourage all students to join History Club next year. Yolanda Olvera I enjoyed my history day experience and learned a lot about people and websites. Brenna Busching It was a fun experience. Edgar Huerta It was an awesome experience, I enjoyed being on the EWU campus-it opened my mind to college possibilities. Marla Banda It was exciting to place and compete against tough competition, I am excited for state. Kole Webster Historial es un Día evento regional, estatal y nacional. Los estudiantes que asisten a estas competiciones tienen la opción de hacer un sitio web, componer un documental, la creación de una exposición, o escribir un documento que se ajuste a un tema determinado. El tema de este año es de Derechos y Responsabilidades. Vestirse y actuar de una manera profesional fue un requisito. 7 Teachers Teaching Teachers Joy Wilson Mrs. recently spent a week in Vancouver and Wenatchee, Washington sharing with other teachers her experiences in Science. STEM, the integrated curriculum of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math has been taught to our 8th graders by Joy for 5 years. Our 8th grade science is a CTE (Career and Technical Education) STEM class that Joy has been revising for 5 years. This summer, Joy and Margaret Templeton, (Also a CTE teacher) were contracted to write 40 lessons to supplement the Family and Consumer Science Framework for STEM. They both shared these lessons and ideas at the Family and Consumer Science Conference in Vancouver on October Joy then shared with over 60 teachers, Science-Take Out a company that provides Science kits that are cost effective and easy to use. Teachers completed a lab about diagnosing diabetes. Most found it to be an informative lab and enjoyed doing it. The company offers kits that are helpful Biology, and Family and Consumer Science Classes such as: cell communication, Hand on a Hot stove, Disease Detectives, Life support for a Developing Baby and many more. From Vancouver Joy traveled to North Central ESD in Wenatchee to teach a 2 day class to other Junior High Science teachers about one of the SLC science kits, Earth in Space. In Brewster Earth in Space is taught in the spring with a STEM unit of Recycle and Redesign. This unit teaches students to take care of this earth and recycle items. The 8th grade students learn sewing skills and create a recycled item for their bedroom. This project is then presented with a scaled drawing of their bedroom, the skills used, the process of creating it and a picture of the item in the room. This is considered the 8th grade version of the senior project. La Sra. Joy Wilson pasó recientemente una semana en Vancouver y Wenatchee, Washington compartiendo con otros Maestros sus experiencias en la materia de Ciencia. STEM, el currículo integrado de Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas se ha enseñado a nuestros estudiantes del grado 8 de Joy durante los últimos 5 años. Nuestra ciencia del octavo grado es una clase STEM CTE (Educación Profesional y Técnica) que Joy ha estado revisando durante 5 años. Este verano, Joy y Margaret Templeton, (también un maestro CTE) fueron contratados para escribir 40 lecciones como complemento a la Familia y Ciencias del Consumidor marco de STEM. Desde Vancouver Joy viajó a Norte ESD Central de Wenatchee a enseñar una clase de 2 días a otros maestros de secundaria de uno de los kits de la ciencia SLC, Tierra en el espacio. En Brewster Tierra en el espacio que se enseña en la primavera con una unidad de STEM de reciclaje y rediseño. Esta unidad se enseña a los estudiantes a cuidar de esta tierra y elementos reciclados. Los estudiantes del octavo grado aprenden habilidades de costura y crear un elemento de reciclado para su dormitorio. Este proyecto se presentó a continuación con un dibujo a escala de su dormitorio, las habilidades utilizadas, el proceso de creación y una imagen del elemento de la habitación. Esto se considera la versión octavo grado del proyecto culminante de los estudiantes del grado doce. 7

8 8 FBLA Brewster s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter traveled to Wenatchee Valley College, November 6, 2013 for the North Central Region Fall Conference. The conference consisted of two keynote speakers and three workshop sessions. The keynote speakers were gave inspiring speeches. The first was John McQuaig, the founder of North Cascades National Bank. He spoke to us using an analogy about climbing high mountains in regards to teamwork and overcoming obstacles in real life. The second was Sandy Wheeler, the founder of Bowflex, he spoke to us about perseverance and effective communication. According to one of Brewster s FBLA members the keynote speakers and workshops were amazing. Then, on February 11, 2014, Brewster s FBLA chapter traveled to Wenatchee Valley College once again; this time to compete at the North Central Fall Regional conference. Twelve members competed and five will advance to state. Washington FBLA State will be held in Seattle, at the Westin in April. The students advancing to state include Margie Brammer, Cade Smith, Victor Chacon, Mitch Boesel, and Drew Dezellem. Danny Carrillo, Margie Brammer, Kris Ramirez, Kim Ramirez, Cade Smith, Chandler Smith, Brette Boesel, Mitch Boesel, Victor Chacon, Drew Dezellem Margie Brammer placed 3rd in Business Communication. Cade Smith, Victor Chacon, and Mitch Boesel placed 2nd in Banking and Financial Systems and Drew Dezellem place 2nd in Client Service. Futuros Líderes Los del Comercio de América (FBLA) capítulo de Brewster viajaron al Colegio del Valle de Wenatchee, el 6 de noviembre de 2013 para la Conferencia de Otoño Región Norte Central. La conferencia consistió en dos presentadores principales y tres sesiones de taller. Los presentadores principales dieron discursos inspiradores. El primero fue John McQuaig, el fundador del Banco Nacional Cascadas del Norte. 9 Pacific Science Center This year the Pacific Science Center staff came to Brewster Elementary. The PSC staff provided information about Engineering during an assembly, the students enjoyed their humor immensely. After the assembly students went to the library to do some investigative learning by playing at different engineering stations. Lastly, the PSC staff conducted lessons for the classrooms which were very fun and motivating. Este año, el personal del Centro Pacífico de Ciencia visito a la Escuela Primaria de Brewster. Kids were able to work with the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife in learning about water, land, and how they are connected. It is a time when they can see our science kit, Land and Water, in action. In the class room kids are using stream tables to see how land is affected by water. In Leavenworth, they get to test the temperature of water, see the animals that count on the rivers and streams in our area, and see the plants that help the animals find shade, food, and shelter for their habitats. The classes kids went to included Riparian Ramble, Watershed Detectives, What s Hatchin Tour, Web of Life, and Rolling Rivers. They also saw a King-Sized Aquarium, raptors from Washington State, and did A-Mazing- Salmon trivia. It was a great day with a ton of learning! Estudiantes del quinto grado tuvieron la oportunidad el 19 de septiembre de 2013 de ir a Leavenworth, WA y visitar el Festival de Salmon. 10 10 Rooters Bus of Brewster Basketball fans Hundreds recently rode big yellow school buses to Spokane, Wenatchee and Yakima to follow the boys and girls teams in regional and state competition. A total of five full buses were used: two to Spokane; two to Wenatchee; and one to Yakima for the Thursday game against Kings High School. Each time, Brewster Bears fans showed their spirit and character, paying to ride the bus, showing up on time, communicating with the chaperones, taking care of the bus and cheering like crazy for the boys and girls no matter what. Even though some of those rides were long and riders returned late, it was one of the best years for district support of fans and fan support for their teams. Owl Masks In February, Bruce Morrison from the Methow Valley Arts program spent two hours with the third grade classes teaching mask making. Each student constructed and painted an owl mask. Before the students actually made the masks Bruce shared some of his knowledge related to owls. This tied in well with the third grade science unit which involves dissecting owl pellets. The purpose of examining owl pellets was to compare the bones of mammals to humans which are similar in number and shape, but differ in size. Students were able to compare rodent bones, found in owl pellets, examine bone structure and function. The masks were a great success and allowed each student to use their own artistic expression when painting them. They are displayed in the hallway of the elementary building. Please stop to admire them if you have an opportunity! In addition to the art project each third grader wrote a letter in Spanish which will be delivered to third grade students in La Manzanilla, Mexico. Bruce is spending a month there and will be working with students in the elementary school. When he returns in April he will bring letters from the students in La Manzanilla. This is a nice opportunity for our students to practice their writing and Spanish skills as well as communicating with the students in Mexico and sharing experiences. Esta es una buena oportunidad para que nuestros estudiantes practiquen su escritura y habilidades en español, así como la comunicación con los estudiantes en México y poder compartir experiencias LEAP Education Conference Conferencia Educativa LEAP 2014 Five Students represented the Brewster School District on January 16th 18th during the 14th Annual LEAP Education Conference and Legislative Day in Tacoma/Olympia this year. Seniors Diana Garcia and Maria Lopez, Juniors Ana Vargas and Alma Ruiz, and Sophomore Dulce Ruiz attended the 2014 Latino Educational Achievement Project and Legislative Day Conference. Each year LEAP aims to provoke the minds and aspirations of students who attend the conference, and this year was no different. The 14th annual conference was able to connect students to valuable resources through the educational workshops. Students took the opportunity to learn from the many experienced educators and community leaders present at this conference. Students learned why college is important for their future. Students also learned that they are not alone on this journey and that there s many other students experiencing the same challenges as them. There is help available, but students also have to be ready to do their part. So the question is Are you ready? Challenges remain. In 2003, due in large part to the work of LEAP, Washington s Legislature approved House Bill This changed Washington law to allow undocumented students to pay instate tuition to attend college. A full decade later it remains our job to convince our elected officials to allow the same students to qualify for financial assistance, just as others do whose families cannot afford to pay for college. On Friday January 17th during LEAP Legislative Day, students had the opportunity to make this possible. Students had the chance to meet and speak with our state representatives in our state s Capitol, to let them know: I m Ready! to work hard to get a good education. I m Ready! for ALL students who are educated in our state to be given the same opportunity to succeed. I m Ready! for our elected officials to do the right thing. For the past several decades, Latinos have been growing at a much faster rate than other populations in Washington state. Therefore, increasingly, how well Latinos are educated beyond high school whether in community, technical colleges, trade schools, or universities will significantly shape the overall health and well-being of our state for generations to come. Together, let s show everyone WE ARE READY! Cinco estudiantes representaron el Distrito Escolar de Brewster durante la décimo cuarta Conferencia Anual de Educación LEAP y Día Legislativo en Tacoma / Olympia este año. La Conferencia se llevó a cabo del 16 al 18 de Enero. Diana García, María López, Ana Vargas, Alma Ruiz y Dulce Ruiz fueron las estudiantes que asistieron a la Conferencia y Día Legislativo. LEAP significa (Un proyecto de Logro Educativo para Latinos). Cada año LEAP pretende provocar a las mentes y las aspiraciones de los estudiantes que asisten a la conferencia, y este año no fue diferente. 12 12 HOSTS isn t just about reading! HOSTS no se trata sólo de la lectura! I admit I don t come from an education background. My degree is in Business Administration. But I have to say, what I ve learned so far this year as coordinator in the HOSTS room is that HOSTS isn t just about reading! Yes, it is a joy to watch our students improve their reading skills and for some, even catch up to grade level and leave our HOSTS program. That is our goal! But what I personally find most rewarding is the relationships formed between our students and our community. I am humbled as I sit and watch and listen to our dedicated community members interact with our students. The relationships that have been built over the course of the past five months are meaningful and reciprocal. Students enter our room excited to see their mentors and excited to become better readers. That s not to say we don t have the occasional, This is too hard and the dreaded, I can t. This is when, in my opinion, I witness the most important seeds for a successful life being planted by our mentors. A mentor is each student s very own cheerleader sitting beside them, encouraging the student to give their best effort and reassuring the student that it is alright to be in a place of struggle. Accountability, personal responsibility, and perseverance are all qualities modeled by our mentors and taught to our students. Each of these qualities is necessary to live a productive, successful life. On my way to work this morning I heard this statement on the radio, The best investment we can make in our society is to work with our young people. I am witnessing first hand the impact that 45 minutes a week can make in a child s life. Please, come to Brewster Elementary School and check out our HOSTS room! We would love to show you what our program is all about. Admito que no vengo de un fondo de educación. Mi título es en Administración de Empresas. Pero tengo que decir, lo que he aprendido hasta ahora este año como coordinadora en la sala de HOSTS es que HOSTS no es sólo acerca de la lectura! Cada mentor es un propio animador de cada estudiante que se sienta a su lado, apoyando al estudiante a dar su mejor esfuerzo y tranquilizar al estudiante que teme al estar en un lugar de lucha. Rendición de cuentas, la responsabilidad personal y la perseverancia son cualidades modeladas por nuestros mentores y enseñan a nuestros estudiantes. Cada una de estas cualidades es necesaria para vivir una vida de éxito productivo. En mi camino al trabajo esta mañana escuché esta declaración en la radio, La mejor inversión que podemos hacer en nuestra sociedad es trabajar con nuestros jóvenes. 13 Brewster Parent Advisory Committee 13 Brewster School District s Parent Advisory Committee has been working very hard all school year bringing in a variety of Guest Speakers to present during each monthly meeting. Just this last meeting on March 3rd, 2014 our Brewster PAC was delighted with the visit of Judi Jensen, North Central Educational Service District Title I Director, who was present to speak to our parents about our Title I program and Parent Involvement. She also covered the areas of Student Services, Funding Sources and Parent Involvement Plans and Strategies for the Brewster School District. At the end of her presentation she allowed time for parents to discuss any questions, concerns or suggestions they had about our Title I program. Our parents also had the opportunity to fill out a Parent Survey which focused on evaluating the student services we offer and how well our parents feel we are doing to accomplish our goal each year! Following, that same evening, we had two presenters from Northwest Justice Projects Lola Velasquez, Attorney at law and Caitlin Cervenka, Jesuit Volunteer/Coordinator, they spoke to our parents about the services they provide and the types of cases they handle throughout the year. In general, priority cases involve complex legal problems or issues that generally will not be handled by private attorneys such as: disputed custody cases involving domestic violence or children at risk of harm subsidized or public housing evictions involving disability issues and discrimination home mortgage foreclosure or lending abuses access to government subsistence benefits such as TANF, GAU, SSI or veteran s benefits access to medical care or benefits such as Medicaid, Basic Health, Medicare Part D, home health or other similar benefits education rights such as special education, transitional language assistance, or disciplinary proceedings employment issues primarily for agricultural workers related to lost wages, discrimination or workplace health and safety conditions and consumer issues related to fraud, predatory lending, medical debt, and other similar issues. Lola also covered the topic Human Trafficking, it s an issue happening to people who don t even realize they are victims until something happens and they seek for help. It s important to understand that victims have rights and they need to be educated so they can stop these vicious cycles. Our parents also had the opportunity to meet individually with our presenters at the end of the meeting and discuss any personal issues currently happening to them. Our next PAC meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2014 at 6:00pm at the Brewster High school Library (During this meeting parents and community meet with our board members and administrators to provide feedback about Brewster Schools.)
