The deadline for submissions is posted each month in the! Dates to Know" above. Dear Parents and Families, As I write this letter we are on our way to spring break! It has been a great few months and we are really looking forward to spring time and nicer weather. Starting in April, the year tends to fly by. Be sure to keep up with the school website under! meet our teams" for our monthly/bimonthly newsletters from teacher teams as well as all the Eagle Eyes and Eagle Extras. Our calendar of events is also updated as frequently as possible. Glenn Stephens PTO has a Facebook page and the school district has a created a Glenn Stephens Facebook Page as well. We are going to try and get some new pictures and updates on there as well. Go ahead and! friend" Glenn Stephens and Glenn Stephens PTO. This is the time of year we work on allocations and budget for next year. It looks like due to budget cuts that we will likely not be able to continue our STEAM program; where all students are introduced to the lego curriculum and we will be looking for other ways for our teachers to receive their instructional coaching from the Instructional Resource Teacher. There will be more information to come. Our Kindergarten and first grade classrooms will be a bit larger next year with approximately 22 students. Our bilingual programming will continue to grow and we will have kindergarten thru fourth grades. (Principal s Desk continues on p. 2) Eagle Eye Page 1

2 Principal s Desk (continued from p. 1) We have two teachers retiring including Nancy Bach and Peggy Williams. We have others going on leave including Ms. Kelly who is moving to Colorado for the year. I will try and keep you up to date on all the changes as we know. The Smarter Balanced Assessment or Badger Exam is planned for mid-april for 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th grade students and then those students will also take the MAP test as well starting in the beginning of May. We hope to make it as painless as possible for students. Please let me know if you need any more information regarding testing ( ). We have a very generous grandparent who has been making donations for our music, art, library and physical education programs in addition to our classrooms. This same grandparent has just purchased risers so we can have safe risers for all our music performances. We also had several families, as well as the PTO, respond to the music teachers wish list that was in the Eagle Extra! All of this support is so wonderful and much appreciated! Thank you to all the parents who participate in our school! It is such a great place to work. We hope you and your children are making friends, having fun, and learning at Glenn Stephens this year! Han sido unos meses muy buenos y realmente estamos deseando que llegue la primavera y mejore el clima. A partir de abril el año tiende a volar. Asegúrense de seguir entrando a nuestra página de la red donde podrán encontrar las noticias de los diferentes equipos de maestros/as por medio de sus boletines mensuales/ bimensuales, así como también nuestras noticias en Eagle Eye y Eagle Extra. Nuestro calendario de eventos se actualiza frecuentemente. El PTO de Glenn Stephens tiene una página en Facebook igualmente el distrito escolar creó una página en Facebook para Glenn Stephens. Colocaremos actualizaciones y fotos nuevas en ella. Entre a Facebook y vuélvase "amigo/a" de Glenn Stephens y de Glenn Stephens PTO. Esta es la época del año, cuando trabajamos en las asignaciones y en el presupuesto para el próximo año. Parece que debido a los recortes presupuestarios probablemente no nos será posible continuar con nuestro programa STEAM donde todos los estudiantes se introducen al plan de estudios de lego. Buscaremos otras maneras para que nuestros maestros/as puedan recibir entrenamiento, sobre este currículo, del maestro de recursos didácticos. Se enviará más información en el futuro. Nuestros salones de Kindergarten y primer grado serán un poco más grandes el próximo año, tendrán aproximadamente 22 estudiantes. Nuestro programa bilingüe continuará creciendo tendremos desde Kindergarten hasta cuarto grado. Este año dos maestros se jubilan, Nancy Bach y Peggy Williams. Tendremos otros maestros/as que comenzarán licencias, entre ellos la Sra. Kelly quien se trasladará a Colorado por un año. Trataré de mantenerlos al tanto de todos los cambios que tengamos. El examen Smarter Balanced o Badger está previsto para mediados de abril para los estudiantes de 3ro, 4to y 5to grado, luego estos estudiantes tomarán el examen MAP a principios de mayo. Esperamos que sea lo menos doloroso posible para los estudiantes. Por favor, déjenme saber si ustedes necesitan más información sobre estos exámenes ( ). Tenemos una abuela muy generosa que ha estado haciendo donaciones para nuestros salones de clases y programas de música, arte, biblioteca y educación física. Ahora ella acaba de comprar tarimas para todos nuestros conciertos de música, para que así podamos tener presentaciones seguras. También tuvimos varias familias, así como el PTO respondiendo a la lista de deseos de los profesores de música, que pusimos en el Águila Extra! Todo este apoyo es maravilloso y muy apreciado! 3 PTO 101 By the time you receive this newsletter there will be about 55 days left of school! Time flies and with time comes DEADLINES. We all have them in some form or another. Think about how many books and websites there are about organizing your life? There are a lot of school things coming up this spring that have very specific deadlines. It may mean that a form or payment is due on a certain date or there is an event that starts at a specific time. For example: The Talent Show participation form T-shirt fundraiser Field trip forms A 4/5 concert that starts on 4/29 at 8:15 a.m. We know it$ s hard to keep track of all these school papers and due dates. If you$ re like me, you may not even see some papers that come home. My point is, if there$ s a deadline for something - there is a reason. Sometimes there can be some wiggle room, but when orders for a fundraiser have to be submitted by a certain date it$ s not possible to keep adding orders that come in after the deadline. If you$ re not a friend of the PTO Facebook page, you may want to follow us to get these important deadline reminders. The FUN FAIR was fun and highly successful! The FUN FAIR supports the general budget of the PTO, but this year we will be able to provide a lot of extra support to our music program as a result of the awesome attendance and generosity of Stephens families. The music program will receive a keyboard, keyboard stand, 3 instrument cables, drums, a drum set cover, and drum sticks! Thank you to everyone who supported the FUN FAIR! It was such a whole school effort. Thank you FUN FAIR committee for sacrificing your time and resources. The result was the highest earning FUN FAIR in school history. Thank you to Mr. Sullivan who was Duck Taped and to Ms. GG who survived many, many cans of silly string being sprayed at her. Thank you Mr. Huggins for highly suggesting Ms. GG wear safety goggles. PTO also recently funded an algebra program called GROUNDWORKS requested by Ms. Bach. We purchased 3-6 th grade curriculum for advanced math learning. Many kids will benefit by this opportunity to learn math at a higher level. Check the calendar on the front page for upcoming events. Don$ t miss the dance this year! Start planning your acts for the Talent Show. If you need a spirit wear t-shirt, forms will come home mid-april. This is not a fundraising event, but an opportunity for everyone that needs a Stephens t-shirt to get one at an affordable price. There are board positions available. 9 BOX TOPS UPDATE Thank you to all the families and staff who saved up, counted and submitted their Box Tops over the past few months. Our turn-in deadline was March 2 nd, and we$ re pleased to report that your efforts earned $545 for Glenn Stephens! GREAT JOB EVERYONE! Special thanks to Ben, Aliya, and Maya Walter and Valerie Freer for hours of counting! Q: What products participate in the program? A: Lots of them, and the list is not limited to processed foods. Look for the hot pink Box Tops rectangle. A sampling includes Ziplock, Hefty, General Mills, Land O$ Lakes, Scott paper products, Horizon Organic milk, Yoplait, and Avery office products. You can get a complete list at Remember, each Box Top is worth ten cents! Q: What do I do with them? A: Just cut them out and deposit bundles of them in the plastic folder hanging outside the main office. We$ ll take them any way you want to send them, but ultimately we count them into small baggies of 50 box tops each (bonus certificates are counted separately). So if you do count your Box Tops, please be sure to keep the bonus certificates separate, and use a marker to indicate! 50" on the bags that you$ ve counted, to save us from recounting. 10 Glenn Stephens Talent Show 2015 The 2015 Talent Show will take place on Friday, May 15th, There will be two performances - an afternoon performance and an evening performance at 6:00 p.m. in the Glenn Stephens Elementary Gym. Talents might include (but are not limited to) singing, dancing, instrumental music, skits, magic, juggling, comedy, tumbling, or dramatic prose. Students 4K through 5th can participate. 4th or 5th grade students can be Stage Crew or a Master of Ceremonies (MC). We encourage all of our performers to have fun and show off their true talents! It is our goal this year to keep the entire show under 2.5 hours long. The act time has been reduced to 90 seconds per act. If you re not sure what you d like to do for an act, please consider participating in the group act coordinated by our music teacher, Ms. Haugen. We also encourage kids to form their own group acts to help with time considerations. There are a few important changes this year For singers, music must be instrumental only. No lip-synching is allowed. If there are words being sung by an artist in the song being played, we consider that lip-sync. There will be group acts your child can participate in if they would like to be in the talent show but do not want to perform individually. There will be three groups: a Kindergarten- 1st, 2nd/3rd and 4th/5th grade act. The Talent Show Committee will be limiting the use of any one song across multiple acts. Timeline: Tuesday, April 7th Friday, April 17th Monday, April 20th Week of April 27th Friday, May 15th Participation Forms go home Singing acts must use a karaoke version of the music. There is a box to check on the sign-up form if you need help with getting your music on a CD or flash drive. Participation forms due Review times will be communicated to participants Review week *see below Talent show - afternoon school show and an audience show 6:00 p.m. note: There will be a run through of the show on Friday morning, May 15th. The acts will only talk to Stage crew about their needs; acts do not perform Friday morning. Participation Forms Extra forms can be found as a link in the Eagle Extra or in the school office. All participants must have submitted a form signed by a parent to participate. The signature indicates that parents have read and understand all information and agree to abide by the guidelines and rules. Forms are due before 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17th. * Review Week The review will be held during the week of April 27th during the school day and a review is mandatory. You should have your music ready at your review. 11 2015 Talent Show Guidelines and Rules Please read these guidelines and rules carefully. The Talent Show Committee (consisting of three parent volunteers, the music teacher and the Principal & Assistant Principal) will screen acts for appropriateness, quality and safety. 1. The Talent Show will be held on Friday, May 15, 2015 in the afternoon and 6:00p.m. 2. All participants must have submitted a form signed by a parent. 3. The Talent Show is not a competitive talent show. No actual judging or prioritizing of acts will occur. 4. All acts must be reviewed by the Talent Show Committee and be approved. If your act involves significant set-up or equipment that is difficult to get to school for the audition, a video audition will be accepted by the talent show committee. 5. Total act time should be no longer than 90 seconds. 6. A person may only perform in one act. Stage Crew and MCs cannot be in an act and vice-versa. 7. For singers, music must be instrumental only. No lipsynching is allowed. If there are words being sung by an artist in the song being played, we consider that lip-sync. 8. Acts should have their music ready and with them at their review. If you need help getting your music on a CD or flash drive before your review tell your music teacher or contact the Talent Show Committee at least 1 week before your review. 9. All music CDs or flash drives must be labeled with the performer s name, title of the piece, track number and given to the Talent Show committee at your review. 10. The Talent Show Committee will be limiting the use of any one song across multiple acts. If more than one act has selected the same song, the Talent Show Committee will work with those groups to combine or help them make other choices. A lottery system may also be used if more than one group would like to use the same song. 11. A stage, microphone/sound system/dj, and piano will be made available for performers to use. 12. Inappropriate music, dance or language/lyrics will not be permitted. 13. All acts are responsible for rehearsing and polishing their act on their own. 14. All acts are final after the Review. Type of act and content cannot be changed without notifying the Talent Show Committee. 15. These rules are subject to change at the discretion of the Talent Show Organizing Committee; and enforcement of these rules is subject to the Committee s discretion and judgment. Decisions by the Talent Show Committee and Principal are final. News from the Advanced Learner Department Haiku Contest: Stephens was fortunate enough to have two winning entries in the Greater Dan County Haiku contest. These 4 th grade students had their work selected from many schools and many entries to be part of an anthology of work. They will attend a special evening on April 27 with their families to celebrate their achievements. Yahara Writer s Contest: After reaching the finals of the Yahara Writer$ s contest, I am excited to announce, that one of our 5 th grade students at Stephens won 1 st place for the poetry event for 5 th grade in this prestigious writing competition. This is a huge feat given that thousands of students from all over southern Wisconsin participated. She will attend the top 10 Conference and Awards Ceremony on May 13 at the Union South UW together with the other finalists. This should be a wonderful opportunity for our talented young poet. MathCON Competition: 700 finalists have qualified out of almost 45,000 students, from more than 330 schools in 42 states to compete at the University of Illinois in Chicago on April 25, 2015 in the second round of the MathCON contest. Out of all these students, Stephens School had 7 who were invited to the finals. Do the math! Stephen$ s school represented 1% of all finalists invited to the MathCON 2 nd round. 5 of our families have confirmed that they will be making the trip to Chicago for the event. We wish the finalist good luck and hope that they have an enjoyable experience. Eagle Eye Page 11

12 Show de Talentos de Glenn Stephens 2015 El Show de Talentos, 2015 se llevará a cabo el viernes 15 de mayo, Habrá dos actuaciones - una actuación por la tarde y un espectáculo nocturno a las 6:00 p.m. en el Gimnasio de la Escuela Primaria Glenn Stephens. El Talento puede incluir (pero no se limita a) canto, baile, música instrumental, obras de teatro, magia, malabares, comedia, acrobacia o prosa dramática. Los estudiantes de 4K hasta 5to pueden participar. Los estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado pueden ser parte del equipo de tramoyistas o Maestros de Ceremonia (MC). Animamos a todos nuestros artistas para mostrar sus verdaderos talentos y divertirse! Es nuestra meta para este año que el espectáculo tenga una duración de alrededor de 2.5 horas. El tiempo de actuación se ha reducido a 90 segundos por acto. Si no está seguro de lo que desea hacer para un acto, por favor considere participar en un acto en grupo, coordinado por nuestra profesora de música, la Sra. Haugen. También estamos animando a los niños a formar sus propios actos en grupo para ayudar con el tiempo de duración del evento. Hay algunos cambios importantes este año & Para los cantantes, la música debe ser sólo instrumental. No se permite la sincronización de labios. Si hay palabras que son cantadas por un artista en la canción que se está presentando, consideraremos incluir la sincronización de labios. & Habrá actuaciones en grupo por si su hijo/a desea participar en el Show de Talentos, pero no desea presentarse en forma individual. Tiempos: Martes, abril 7 Viernes, abril 17 Lunes, abril 20 Semana de abril 27 Viernes, mayo 15 Las Formas de Inscripción serán enviadas a la casa La presentación de una canción debe utilizar una versión karaoke de la música. Hay un sitio en el formulario de inscripción que puede marcar por si necesita ayuda consiguiendo su música, colocándola en un CD o en una memoria. Se deben regresar las formas de inscripción debidamente llenadas. Los horarios se les comunicarán a los participantes Semana de práctica * ver más abajo Show de Talentos # habrá un programa en la tarde en la escuela para los estudiantes y el espectáculo para el público será a las 6:00 p.m. nota: Habrá práctica en la mañana del viernes, 15 de marzo. Los artistas que necesiten algo se lo deberán comunicar al personal tramoyista; no habrá presentaciones el viernes en la mañana. Formas de Participación ބ Todos los participantes deben presentar un formulario firmado por uno de los padres en el que los autorizan a participar.
