1 AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Spanish Literature and Culture and Dual Credit Spanish Syllabus Mrs. Ruiz-Brown Morning Tutoring: All week from 8:00 8:40 am Afternoon Tutoring: All week from 4:05 4:30 pm Room: Portable 7A Conference period: 1 st Period Teacher s Web Page: COURSE DESCRIPTION The AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Spanish Literature and Culture and Dual Credit Spanish are rigorous courses, and they are taught entirely in Spanish. Both courses are approximately equivalent to a 5 th or 6 th semester university course. The course requires students to improve their intermediate level proficiency towards the advance level of proficiency across the three modes of communication (interpretative, interpersonal and presentational). The course focuses on the integration of authentic resources including online print, audio, and audiovisual resources, newspaper articles, literature, and essays with the goal of providing a rich, diverse learning experience. ORGANIZATION These courses are organized into thematic units. Each unit topic is viewed through the lens of two or more AP Themes. In each unit, all communicative modes are implemented; particular emphasis is made in the communicative mode in the summative assessment. Unit activities provide opportunities for formative assessment of developing skills, the teacher uses the information to provide feedback to students and to adjust instruction to ensure student progress. Activities are designed to allow for differentiation based on readiness, interest and learning style, accommodating a variety of learners. (Mar 2017). CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS 1. Be POLITE - courteous and respectful. Respect other s rights and property. Know and observe all rules as stated in the NEISD Student Handbook. 2. Be PROMPT - Be in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
2 3. Be PREPARED - Be mentally prepared for class; bring all necessary materials for class; be ready to learn. 4. Be PRODUCTIVE Participation is a KEY point in learning a foreign language. Participation includes: contributing to class discussion, asking questions, responding to questions, sharing your opinion, comments, etc. 5. Be POSITIVE Enter the room with pride and ready to learn. GENERAL 1. Food and/or beverages are NOT allowed in the classroom. 2. Students are to make restroom and/or water fountain visits BEFORE class. 3. Once the tardy bell rings, students will not be allowed to return to lockers. 4. Personal grooming not allowed during class. 5. In the case of a substitute teacher, EXEMPLARY behavior is expected. 6. Students will be disciplined in accordance to the Madison discipline plan. 7. Students are expected to complete the daily work. Remind 101 and the use of the calendar will be a daily resource for the student. REQUIRED CLASSROOM MATERIALS The following is a list of mandatory materials needed for class: 1. Binder and paper. 2. Black or blue pens 3. POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!!!! GRADING POLICY Formative Assessment (60%) -Interpersonal communication 15% (3-4 acts./9wks.) -Presentational communication 15% -Interpretative communication 15% -Facilitating Knowledge Skills 15% Summative Assessment (40%) -Interpretative -Presentational -Interpretative ATTENDANCE / ABSENCE / TARDIES A seating chart will be used to take attendance. Absences and tardies will follow the guidelines set forth in the Madison Handbook. Students are strongly encouraged to call a classmate to find out what took place in class during their absence. If student is absent on the test/quiz day, the student is expected to take the test/quiz on the day he/she returns to class. Student is
3 always welcome to take care of missing assignments during tutoring hours. (Morning tutoring 8:00 8:40 am and afternoon tutoring 4:05 4:30 pm). LATE WORK and MAKE-UP POLICY Late work is defined as any assignment that is not submitted on the due date and class period with the exception of make-up work for absences or approved school activities. A 20% deduction from the total grade earned will be taken for late assignments. Late assignments will be accepted until the day of the test covering that particular topic (District Policy) has been covered or within a three-week grading period. Due dates to make-up work will be determined by the number of days absent and will follow district policy. You are REQUIRED TO MAKE UP QUIZZES AND EXAMS. In order to take quizzes and exams, it is your responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher to reschedule. NO EXTRA CREDIT WORK RE-TEACH/RE-TEST Failure on an assessment: If a student fails a test, they can come in during tutoring times for a re-teach session and re-test. (70% max on re-test). RESTROOM/WATER FOUNTAIN/NURSE There will be times when one will need to leave the room for emergencies. Please do not ask to leave during the first and last 10 minutes of class. Only 1 person at a time will be allowed to leave the classroom. To keep this privilege, do not take advantage of time, and return as soon as you can. A BATHROOM PASS will be issued. CONCERNS & TUTORIAL If there is a concern about grades, conduct, assignments, or you want to discuss specific problems that involve you, please make arrangements to speak with me privately rather than during class.
