1 News May 2016 Dear Valverde Community: It is amazing that May is here and the school-year is coming to a close! There have been so many exciting things that have happened this year and the school is positioned to build on the strong foundation that our staff, students, and families have created. A few highlights from the year include: Our redesign committee created a strong plan to be implemented next year. It includes extended learning time for 1 st through 5 th grade, a partnership with City Year, new curriculum in numerous subject areas, and the introduction of a Project- Based Learning Model. We have seen growth in our literacy and math data. While this is only the beginning and we have a long way to go, it is important because it shows that our efforts are starting to take hold. We gave the school a facelift and are continuing to create a learning environment that is engaging and fosters a sense of pride among our community. We have had increased after-school opportunities for our students, including Engineering, for Success,, Girls On The Run, and Ju-Jitsu. We have had numerous community nights and celebrations. These included Literacy Night, Science Night, and Multicultural night. And don t forget about our Cinco de Mayo celebration which is coming up next week! The Parent Corner Learning at Home Tips of how you can support your child s academic success at home this month. Prevent the summer learning gap! When students do not practice their Reading, Writing, and Math skills over the three summer months, they start the next school year already behind. What will you do to prevent your child from falling behind in his academic skills this summer? Sign them up for a summer program. Check with your local Rec. Centers and libraries for program information and schedule of free summer activities. Ask the library about free museum passes! Trips to the museum are fun and educational. Have your student come home and write about their 3 favorite exhibits. Make sure your child reads for minutes EVERY day and writes about it. Make it a routine before they get out of bed in the morning or before they go to sleep. Once a week, explore a new place you ve never been to. Ask your child to research it, make a plan for what you should do when you get there, and then write about the experience in a journal afterwards. Check your folders over the next weeks for information on end of the year activities. Check in with your students teacher on summer assignments/homework to keep them focused over the next few months. Thank you to everyone that participated and attended Valverde s Culture night! Valverde led the district in Parent-Teacher Home Visits! We have much work to do, but these things represent the exciting beginning of a new chapter for Valverde. I know I speak for the staff when I say that we are ready and eager to continue the work next year, and appreciate your partnership in helping all of our students succeed! All the best, Drew Schutz

3 Noticias May 2016 Estimada comunidad de Valverde: Es sorprendente que mayo este aquí, y que el año escolar este llegando a su fin! Ha habido tantas cosas emocionantes que han ocurrido este año. Nuestra escuela está ahora en condiciones de construir sobre la base sólida que nuestro personal, estudiantes y familias han creado. Algunos aspectos destacados del año incluyen: Nuestro comité de rediseño creó un plan fuerte para ser implementado el próximo año. Incluyendo el tiempo de aprendizaje extendido de 1 a 5 grado, una asociación con el programa City Year, un nuevo plan de estudios en numerosas áreas de conocimiento, y la introducción de un modelo de aprendizaje basado en proyectos. Hemos visto un crecimiento en nuestros datos de lectura, escritura y matemáticas. Si bien esto es sólo el comienzo, tenemos un largo camino por recorrer, esto es importante porque demuestra que nuestros esfuerzos están empezando a afianzarse. Dimos a la escuela una cara nueva, y seguimos creando un ambiente de aprendizaje atractivo que fomenta un sentido de orgullo entre nuestra comunidad. Hemos tenido más opciones después de clases para los estudiantes, incluyendo s, Ingeniería, fútbol para el éxito, Boy Scouts,, y Ju-Jitsu. Hemos tenido numerosas noches de la comunidad y celebraciones. Estos incluyen Noche de Lectura, Noche de Ciencia, y la noche multicultural.
