1 Descripción Circle Leader Usted tiene la oportunidad de llevar su propio camino en aumentar sus ingresos y la de disminuir la necesidad de prestaciones de servicios sociales. Un líder del círculo es una familia o individuo dispuesto y listo para trabajar en sus metas personales para salir de la pobreza. Círculos de Skagit no es un programa de servicio social, sino una oportunidad para que usted pueda desarrollar habilidades de liderazgo. Los líderes del Círculo son seleccionados porque están dispuestos a hacer grandes cambios en sus vidas. El LÍDER del Círculo tiene tres objetivos principales: 1. Crear cambios de vida que conducen a la autosuficiencia permanente. 2. Desarrollar sus dones y habilidades de liderazgo para dar a la comunidad. 3. Utilizar sus experiencias para ayudar a romper el ciclo de la pobreza en su comunidad. El compromiso de LÍDER del Círculo: 1. Completar 10 semanas de la clase Getting Ahead (salir adelante), centrado en la autosuficiencia. 2. Comprometerse para 18 meses, a ser parte de la iniciativa del Círculo después de la clase, Getting Ahead. 3. Asistir a las cenas / reuniones semanales con otros líderes o aliados del Círculo. 4. Reúnirse mensualmente con su Círculo. 5. Avanzar en los objetivos que se identifican en su progreso hacia la autosuficiencia. 6. Un personal disponible para responder preguntas, ofrecer tutoría, y ayudar con la resolución de conflictos. Proceso de Selección para Líder de Círculo: 1. Llene la encuesta de interés. 2. El administrador de su caso lo refiere a los Círculos Skagit. 3. Usted será contactado para una entrevista informal para ver si usted sería un buen candidato. 4. Si es seleccionado, usted asistirá a las reuniones semanales cada jueves por las noches. 5. Completar 10 semanas de la clase Getting Ahead. 6. Ser asignado 2-3 voluntarios aliados. 7. 5 Circles Orientation Invitation Skagit Circles Initiative Circles Orientation Dates: August 15, 1:30-2:30 pm August 22, 3-4 pm August 30, am Location: Family Resource Center at Catholic Community Services, 320 Pacific Place, Mount Vernon Washington For more information: Jan Hamilton, ext 1155 The Skagit Circles Campaign is part of a bold new strategy to engage the community in helping families move out of poverty, children to succeed in school and for community to work together to come up with solutions to systemic barriers that keep people in poverty. This is a high-impact strategy to alleviate poverty that is working in communities across the United States. The Skagit Circles Initiative is part of a national campaign to end poverty in our lifetime developed by Move the Mountain Leadership Center ( Skagit Circles links volunteer community members with families who are experiencing poverty. The reciprocal relationships built in these groups helps break down the isolation many low income families experience, adds meaning to the lives of all the people involved, and strengthens the entire community. Families living in poverty (also know as CIRCLE LEADERS) are screened for their commitment to discovering their path toward self sufficiency and their willingness to be candid about their financial situation with their 2-3 middle or upper income volunteer ALLIES from the community. Allies and Circle families get together once per month. With the help and friendship of the allies, each Circle Leader sets their own goals unique to the family s needs. Allies help families achieve these goals by supporting whatever feels right to that particular circle. Sometimes just having a few people in your corner, coaching you and believing in you is enough to build self esteem you need to change your life. Led by a Guiding Coalition of community members, Skagit Community Action is the lead organization for the Skagit Circles Initiative.

6 HOW TO VOLUNTEER for the CIRCLES INITIATIVE It is the goal of Skagit County Community Action and the Circles Initiative, to empower people in poverty to help solve community problems while transitioning out of poverty themselves. There are many ways to become involved and volunteer. The following volunteer opportunities are some ideas to be active in this initiative, but other opportunities are also available. If you have the skills to help motivate and coach an individual through their journey out of poverty, please consider volunteering. Child Care This initiative includes weekly meetings for families. Each weekly meeting brings together families to share a meal in the evening. Children attend and while the parent(s) are attending trainings, child care support is needed on-site. If you can provide child care assistance, please consider volunteering your time for three hours at a weekly meeting. Meal Preparation Volunteers are needed to commit to providing one meal a week in each county for Circle Leaders and volunteers. If you have the ability to provide a meal, or a portion of a meal for one week, or a series of weeks, please consider volunteering in this capacity. If you would like to assist, but are unable to prepare a meal, consider providing a gift certificate to a local restaurant for a weekly meal. Peer Relationships A critical aspect of this initiative is helping a Circle Leader build positive peer relationships. If you are interested in working with a Circle Leader to build a positive relationship, please consider becoming an Ally. Marketing The program is in need of an individual that can help create a public relations and outreach strategy to create a greater awareness of poverty issues and the Circles Initiative. If you have experience in this area, please consider assisting the program to help create press releases and develop an outreach and marketing strategy in the community. Guest Speakers Each weekly community meeting is intended to assist a Circle Leader in their journey out of poverty. Special featured guest speakers are needed to provide information on the following topics: budgeting, public assistance benefits, tax assistance, nutrition, health topics, prevention, career exploration, art, car repair, and networking. If you can provide a comprehensive training in any of these areas, please consider volunteering your time. Community Guiding Coalition While Skagit County Community Action Agency is the lead agency for the Circles Initiative, it is truly a community model. A critical planning and implementation piece of the initiative is led by the Guiding Coalition. The Guiding Coalition is composed of community leaders, families who are striving to get out of poverty, elected and appointed officials and volunteers. The group works to change the mindset and policies of its community with respect to poverty. In addition to regular meetings of Circles, the Circle Leaders, Circle Allies and other interested community members come together at Weekly Community Meetings to provide support and networking for each other. The Guiding Coalition is responsible not only for the implementation of the initiative, but helps to ensure that the high impact strategy changes the mindset of the community. Guiding Coalition members attend an orientation on the Circles Campaign and a series of workshops through the training of the Bridges Out of Poverty.
