On behalf of the FCCANYS Board of Directors, we welcome you to our 23rd Annual Conference. Our Board, managed by volunteers, has been working tirelessly for the last several months to make this year s conference rewarding, educational & inspiring for all of you! We are proud to offer so many high caliber training opportunities, giving you the tools you need to grow and succeed as a provider. I encourage you to seek out members of FCCANYS s Board and share your thoughts and ideas with them. Your input is valued and helps us continue to represent you in the work of FCCANYS. The Board is continuously working to bring new benefits and strengthen the professionalism of providers through quality trainings and conferences. We look forward to sharing with you, where we have been and the great things to come in the future. In closing, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for the hard work you do every day. 3 2 INFORMATION General Information Name Badges Wear your conference name badges all day, every day! You will not be allowed into workshops or meals without your name badge. Meals You have received meal tickets in your conference registration packet. These tickets will allow you admittance into the dining room. The Conference Package you registered for determines which meals are included with your conference registration. Place all meals tickets in the plastic holder behind your name badge for easy access. Surrender the corresponding meal ticket (for each meal) upon entering the dining room. There will be NO admittance without a meal ticket. Child Care Training Credit for Providers This conference is offering 15 hours of family child care training that qualify towards the required 30 hours OCFS training every two years. Stickers will be given at the end of each session to document attendance. Please retain your certificate & conference program in your professional portfolio to document/verify the training you attended at this conference. Lost or misplaced certificates will not be replaced by FCCANYS. Certificate of Attendance Information Your Certificate of Attendance for your professional portfolio is printed on the last page of your conference program. Please write your name on your certificate before your first workshop. At the end of each workshop please present your Certificate of Attendance to the FCCANYS Board Member/Hostess as you leave and the appropriate sticker will be attached for that workshop session. You must be present for the ENTIRE workshop to receive a sticker. Workshops will be closed fifteen (15) minutes after the start time of the session. When a workshop has reached maximum capacity of participants the door to the room will be closed. Please respect a closed door Do not enter! EIP Recipients Please Note: EIP requires documentation of successful course completion for all EIP recipients. Your Conference Certificate of Participation will provide the necessary documentation required by EIP verifying attendance at sessions from the stickers attached to your certificate. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) If you are interested in obtaining low cost CEU s for this training be sure to grab the CEU application at the Registration Table. You will be required to write a brief reflection after each session. Submit your application, workshop reflections & CEU payment (cash or check) at the Registration Table at the end of the conference. Be sure to sign the CEU attendance sheet in each session. Workshop Sign in Sheets All participants must sign the workshop attendance sheet at each session attended. Only the CEU participants are required to sign both the workshop attendance sheet AND the CEU attendance sheet at each session. Ask me! 4 INFORMATION 3 QUALITYstarsNY Standards Alignment FCCANYS worked with QUALITYstarsNY to designate which workshops offered at this year s conference are aligned with the QUALITYstarsNY Standards for Family Child Care Providers. The aligned workshops could assist you (and your staff) in meeting Relevant QSNY Topic Areas & Standards. The QUALITYstarsNY aligned workshops are denoted by QSNY on the charts on pages 8 & 9 and with the workshops descriptions. Multilingual Translation Service We are offering two multilingual workshops each session. Workshops will be simultaneously translated into Spanish. The translators & Spanish speaking providers will utilize headsets for this service. The workshops that will be simultaneously translated into Spanish are denoted with the symbol on pages 8 & 9. See workshop listing/descriptions in Spanish on pages 19, 20 & 21. Exhibit Information The Exhibit area is more than a simple marketplace. It is an atmosphere for interaction, surprises, and fun! We have kept in mind the varied needs of providers and agencies, by mixing a few nontraditional booths in among conference regulars. With so many old favorites and new possibilities, there will be something for everyone. Spend some time interacting with the Exhibitors and other participants. What a great place to network, enjoy others expertise, and truly appreciate the spirit of the conference. Exhibits will be open Friday 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM & Saturday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM. These hours will allow plenty of opportunites to explore and shop. Conference participation by an exhibitor does not constitute an endorsement of products or services by FCCANYS. As with everything, we may have different ideas about what is appropriate to sell or display at a conference of this type. Please share any concerns & applause directly with the exhibitors. Changes or Additions Any changes or additions to workshops will be posted at the Registration area. Conference Evaluations Suggestions from participants have always played a critical part in improving the conference each year. Please share your thoughts on the evaluation form. Leave your Evaluation Form in the box near the registration table before the end of the conference. Children Child care is not provided at the conference. While our careers and this conference are devoted to providing and promoting quality child care, workshops are not an appropriate setting for children. Children ARE NOT permitted in workshops, keynote sessions, or meals. Please respect this decision and make alternative arrangements for your children. Sensitivities Because of the nature of a conference, we ask that you be considerate of those who have asthma, allergies and and/or are extremely sensitive to scents. We ask that you minimize your use of perfumes and other fragrant beauty products. Cell Phones We require that all cell phone ringers are turned off (use vibrate mode only) during ALL workshops and keynotes. Smoking is restricted to designated smoking areas only. Teaching Strategies GOLD can be used with any developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum and is based on 38 research-based objectives that include predictors of school success and are aligned with the Common Core State Standards, State Early Learning Guidelines & QUALITYstarsNY. In this 1-day session, participants will be introduced to the components and structure of Teaching Strategies GOLD. Through video clips and large-group discussions, providers will explore the progressions of development and learning for children from birth through kindergarten. Participants will practice using the tools of the assessment system as they follow the four-step assessment cycle. That includes evaluating a child s portfolio and developing a conference form to share with families. There will be opportunity to explore and practice using Teaching Strategies GOLD online. The Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care is a comprehensive curriculum that addresses the specific needs of the family child care community. It is a framework based on sound research, theory, and developmentally appropriate goals and objectives for learning that address how children learn, multiple types of environments, the provider s role in caring and teaching, how to build family partnerships, and responsive daily routines and experiences. This curriculum is unique in that it addresses how to include all children in the program, birth through school-age, the provider s own children in the program, and sibling enrollment. This curriculum is also aligned with the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC) Accreditation standards and QUALITYstarsNY standards. FCCANYS Conference 2014

We do not always have control over what happens around us but we can do things to prepare. We will discuss general preparedness and lessons learned. Everyone has been impacted by tragedy on some level and there are always lesson learned. This workshop will also include discussion on SIDS, Shaken Baby Syndrome, death, illness, and other life altering events. OCFS Training Topics: 6, 8, 9 EAST 1 What s New with CACFP: Program Changes and Updates Josie Ennist, RD Public Health Nutritionist, CACFP Homes Administration Unit, Division of Nutrition Marc Barron, MA, RD, CDN, NYS Dept. of Health - Child and Adult Food Program This interactive workshop will review new resources and regulations for Family Child Care Providers who participate in CACFP. Participants will be given an overview of the new guidance on infant feeding requirements, breast feeding friendly training material, Crediting Foods in CACFP, Civil Rights Training requirements and Team Nutrition s Recipes for Healthy Kids Cookbook. A review of CACFP new meal pattern requirements is tentatively planned pending USDA s release of this guidance material. This workshop is for CACFP participants. OCFS Training Topics: 1, 2, 7 QSNY: PH 4 EAST 2 Portfolio 2.0: Using Technology to Communicate Children s Development Elizabeth Carlson, Hollingsworth Preschool, Teachers College, Columbia University In this workshop, we will explore the use of digital/ cloud technology as a means of documenting and sharing children s development with families. Participants will examine ways in which their current systems of documentation can be augmented by digital/cloud technology. Matters of cost and security will also be discussed. STEM, Social/ Emotional Wellness and Literacy themes will be covered. This workshop will provide ideas for family child care providers to plan educational television viewing experiences to comply with the upcoming new regulations. Providers gave us valuable feedback and ideas at the conference workshop. Since then, we have revised, added, and transformed those ideas into contemporary health and safety regulations that go into effect May 1, Come test your knowledge of the new regulatory changes in the OCFS adaptation of the famous TV game show. OCFS Training Topics: 1, 5 QSNY: PP 8, 9 & 10 EAST 2 Mandated Reporter Responsibilities: Roles, Values & Indicators Sue Kowaleski, Coordinator, Southern Adirondack Child Care Network Mandated reporters must regularly participate in workshops and this one's a little different from the many you've already attended. After a quick review of the responsibilities & indicators, we will take an active look at how values influence your report, the roles that the different players have in the process and a little policy development, too.
