The Brewster School District would like to thank the community members, businesses and parents for their continued support. Without that support, many of the articles in this issue of Bear Tracks would not be possible due to programs being unfunded. We would like to thank Rick Miller for putting together this first-class newsletter. Lastly, the staff and students of the Brewster School District. Even with finances tight, State and Federal requirements growing, they continue to work hard to prepare students and themselves for college, work, and life. Go Bears!! Microsoft IT Academy Career and Tech Grant The Microsoft IT Academy Grant includes training and certification in a number of Microsoft products, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as advanced topics, including programming, Web development and database development. The Career and Technical Education staff of Brewster High School attended training in August to prepare for a new state-sponsored program in the Business area. The district is now a member of the Microsoft IT Academy which will allow students to be trained using Windows 7 and Microsoft Office Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) is the world-recognized standards-based certification - the premier credential chosen by students seeking to validate their skills using the full features and functionality of the Microsoft Office system. MOS promotes academic preparedness and workforce readiness for students, optimizes course effectiveness and classroom efficiency for the teacher, and strengthens the programs, curricula, relevance and stature of the institution. The business department is utilizing the IT Academy program through its Computer Applications course. The goal of the program is to have all of the 27 enrolled students become MOS certified in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint before the end of the school year. Students will also have the opportunity to become certified in Outlook, Access, SharePoint, and OneNote. In addition to the Specialist certification, advanced students will also be able to gain Expert status in Word and Excel. Brewster High School is also a testing site and students will be tested at no charge. 1

Mariachi Performance Friday, October 14 - The Brewster School District was treated to a performance by Mariachi Huenachi of Wenatchee High School. Brewster students danced and clapped along as the Mariachi band, under the direction of Ramon Rivera, entertained the crowd with a variety of traditional and modern songs. Thanks to a musical exchange between the school districts, the concert was provided free of charge and plans have been made to make this a yearly tradition. Salmon Fest 5th grade was able to attend the Salmonfest festival in Leavenworth, WA. The kids start learning about salmon, raptors, macro invertebrates, the riparian zone, and what salmon need to survive the life they lead in September. After a month of non stop learning, we then go to Salmonfest. Volunteers from the department of fish and wildlife teach the kids more about the salmon, it s predators, and all the things necessary to have a healthy salmon environment. It is always a fun and educational trip that the kids really enjoy. Festival del Salmon Alumnos de 5o grado asistieron al festival del Salmon en Leavenworth, WA. 3 Mission Accomplished!! After many years of dreaming, researching, fundraising, and planning, our new playground station is now in full swing. For the last two years our cookie dough fundraisers have been undertaken with the explicit goal of purchasing a playground structure that all of our 520 students could access and enjoy. Our Brewster Elementary student council representatives narrowed the choice to a play system that fit both our needs and our budget. We have been very happy with our choice of the Pacific Outdoor Products for the purchase and installation. The remaining task before the students could actually play on it was the chore of laying landscape cloth and spreading gravel. This was quite a project that deserves a number of special THANKS. Our grounds maintenance crew was essential, although the majority of our outstanding work crew was a group of sixth grade students. I appreciate Ms. Goulet loaning Tessa Orozco, Meret Miller, Yvette Sanchez, Caiden Riggan, Naydelin Arevelo, Ricardo Torres, and Damian Median for the majority of the day. They were awesome! Their relief team consisted of Melisa Corrales, Marlisa Garcia, Marta Martinez, and Felix Nava. Lastly, Mrs. Shelton brought one of her classes to put the finishing touches on. As usual, David Freels and Godbey s were dependable and went aboveand- beyond to complete our project successfully. The BES staff and students would also like to thank Mrs. Blackburn and Mr. Driessen for their consistent attention to improving our facilities for our students. Mrs. K. Urgent Repair Grant Awarded Brewster was awarded $100,000 grant to begin roof replacement. Early this fall Brewster submitted a competitive grant to begin replacing the aging roof on the elementary building. The roof on the elementary and high school range from 15 to 20 years old and are in need of replacement. Financial difficulties in the past prevented the proper maintenance plan to be in place, as a result, there is a need to begin replacing the roof on both buildings. Receiving this grant is a big boost to properly maintaining our facilities and allows a good start on the much needed project. 4 Levy Year This year the Brewster School District will be running a replacement levy. The current levy expires in This replacement Levy maintains current educational programs and school operations. Local school levies are the means used by public school districts around the state to pay for programs and activities which are not adequately funded by the State or Federal Government. The State does not fully fund educational programs and districts are required to run local levies to pay for the unfunded programs. Our Levy and Levy Equalization provides about 19% of the total budget This levy will replace the current levy and fund programs such as; Ag Program, Academic Programs, Electives, College in the Classroom, Textbooks, School Safety, Art, Music, PE, Technology, Outdoor Education, Transportation, School Nurse, Extra-Curricular, Clubs, Maintenance, Communication, Reading Specialist, and more. Your support for our students and the programs that they enjoy is appreciated. It will be once again the time where we call on you for your support. In February we will be running the replacement Levy. We all know the difficult economic times that we all are facing, education is no exception. Our children, our students, are also affected by these difficult times. Their education is positively or negatively impacted by the actions of adults. While we can t control the decisions made at the state level, we are the only advocates our children have at the community level, they depend on us and our community to continue to have the education choices and programs they are now experiencing. If you would like to drop off donations for the Food Bank you can do so at the District Office of the school. Kids Day Día de Niños The CWP seniors will be holding Kids Day on December 17 th at the Brewster High School Commons and gyms. All the children in 6 th the grade and younger are welcome to attend Kids Day this fun filled day. There will be carnival type activities for the children and a visit from Santa. Children are encouraged to bring a drawing of the meaning of Christmas to have a chance to win a sled. 5 Art Arte Imagine Learning Did you ever imagine that an elementary student could receive instruction that is just right for them at their own learning level, on a computer? Well Brewster Elementary is using such a program called Imagine Learning! Imagine Learning is a new language and literacy software program. 145 students at Brewster Elementary and Jr. High are having the opportunity to receive one on one instruction specifically designed to meet their individuals needs in reading. Students as young as 1 st grade are having this opportunity to learn on the computer. The kids are excited and motivated! They are engaged for minutes every day depending on age. Come visit Brewster Elementary and see what kids are doing when they are working with Imagine Learning! Arts and Crafts have just finished repeated pattern designs up in the library. Fantastic colors and patterns! Currently they are building paper airplanes. Adv Art students are working on a research project of an artist of their choice. They write a short biography of the artist, then reproduce a painting of the artist. Currently the paintings look fantastic! Drawing and Painting students finished an upside down drawing of a Vincent Van Gogh painting. All of my students do fantastic work! These are in the library if you re interested. I will try to get a photographer from the paper to take pictures. Los alumnos en las clases de Artes y Artesanías acaban de terminar diseños de figuras repetidas en la biblioteca. Figuras y Colores fantásticos! Actualmente están construyendo aviones de papel. Late Start Mondays Comienzo Tardío los Lunes Staff have been using the Monday Late Starts to review assessment data to find strengths and weakness in our curriculum and instruction, in addition, looking at individual student work to help determine the needs of students. This information is important in assisting staff in adjusting their instruction to meet the needs of the students. Additionally, training in Professional Learning Communities, Formative Assessments, and working on aligning new state standards to current curriculum has been done. 6 Strategic Plan A committee of staff, students, and community members spent numerous hours developing a new three year Strategic Plan addressing academic and school climate needs. Using surveys from staff, students, parents and community members the committee put together this plan. The committee analyzed state and local assessment data to develop a plan for improving student achievement. The Vision of the School District is We will provide a healthy learning environment, in partnership with the community, where all students are prepared to be college and workforce ready, while honoring staff commitment, the celebration of student success, and the modeling and expectation of responsible citizenship. The Strategic Plan expresses three overall goals or initiatives, they are as follows: (A complete plan can be obtained at the District Office.) Initiative #1 Increase the academic challenge and ensure the continuous improvement of learning and performance for all students. Key Actions: Student Learning 1.1 Curriculum 1.2 Instruction 1.3 Focus on Student Learning 1.4 Assessment 1.5 Quality Staff Initiative #2 Promote meaningful partnerships with our families and our community to support student learning. Key Actions: Collaborative Relationships and School-community Partnerships 2.1 Families 2.2 Community 2.3 Schools Initiative #3 Utilize public funds and resources in a wise and efficient manner. Key Actions: Resource Management 3.1 Strategic and Appropriate Allocation of Resources The Plan also includes Core Beliefs of the District; We believe our highest priority is to ensure all students learn and succeed. We believe in high expectations for all students and staff. We believe every child should be provided opportunities to learn and should be educated in a safe and caring environment. We believe diversity is an asset to our school and community and traditions should be respected. We believe students should be active participants in their education. We believe professional development is essential for staff and enhances student learning. We believe our schools are an essential part of the community and help foster civic pride and alliance within the community. We believe all students should be provided every opportunity to reach their full potential development: academically, socially and emotionally. 6

7 Plan Estratégico Un comité formado por miembros del personal, alumnos, y miembros de la comunidad pasaron numerosas horas desarrollando un nuevo Plan Estratégico de tres años señalando el clima de necesidades académicas y escolares. Utilizando encuestas del personal, alumnos, padres y miembros de la comunidad fue como el comité formo este plan. El comité analizo datos de evaluaciones estatales y locales para desarrollar un plan para mejorar el logro estudiantil. La Visión del Distrito Escolar es Proporcionaremos un medio ambiente saludable para el aprendizaje, en asociación con la comunidad, donde todos los alumnos son preparados para la Universidad y para la fuerza laboral, mientras honoramos el compromiso del personal, la celebración del éxito estudiantil, y la modelación y expectativa de responsabilidad ciudadana. 8 Technology Technologia What s new with technology here in Brewster? There are several classrooms full of new computers and a major upgrade for the elementary school teachers. Both computer labs in the junior senior high school and one in the elementary school received new computers. Because the instructors, Mr. Miller and Ms. Crenshaw are taking part in Microsoft s IT Academy we are able to install Microsoft Office 2010 in their classrooms at no cost. And their students are able to receive training with Microsoft course material, on-line classes and the opportunity to become Microsoft certified which can create real employment possibilities. Another benefit of the IT Academy is the ability to install Windows 7 on any computer in the district. This option became very useful as we received 33 computers from the Computers 4 Kids program. The C4K program provides schools with computers that come from state agencies as they upgrade to newer models. The towers that we received arrived without operating systems but were capable of running Windows 7. This allowed us to replace the aging elementary teacher s computers with ones running the current operating system and office software. In our current economy it would be easy to question why we updated three labs. The Carl Perkins Grant which provides the funding for what used to be called vocational education is to be used in part to ensure that the equipment students use is the latest technology. This ensures that the career and technical education students can experience a real world work experience. Both of the labs were filled with computers that were not able to meet this requirement, were starting to fail and need to be replaced. The old computers are being reconditioned and are going to be placed in classrooms that do not have any student computers or replace ones that no longer function. In the elementary school both of the labs have been filled with C4K computers for many years. While this has been our primary source of computers they are still used and sometimes they just quit working. We needed a more stable set of computers and having them be both new and all the same model makes teaching and testing much easier. Testing has become one of the major uses of the labs as they are used in state level testing as well standardized testing for reading, mathematics and language arts. We have also started using a new program called Imagine Learning which uses the computers to help students improve their language skills. Computers are not the only new technology being used here at school. Interactive white boards are becoming more popular and we have at two here that received at no cost to the district and some others that were part of grants. The interactive white board uses a computer, a projector and a white board together to create a new tool for teachers. The system is able to sense when a special pen is used on the white board and is able to project the digital ink onto the white board even though there is no actual ink. This allows the computer to capture everything that is being written or drawn and it can be saved for later use or printed. This same pen can control the computer the white board is attached to. The projector displays the computer screen onto the white board and the pen then acts as the mouse. The teacher can then demonstrate any program on the computer while standing in front of the class and maintaining eye contact. Students can also come up and demonstrate how to use a program or use tools that are part of the white board software. Another key piece of classroom technology is the document camera. A document camera used with a projector allows teachers to display student work, art work, or an actual object onto the large screen in the front of the room. This allows the class to follow along as a paper is corrected, or watch as the teacher displays something too small for the whole class to see without having to crowd around the table hoping to actually catch a glimpse of what is being shown. It has taken a fairly long period of time but all of the elementary classrooms now have a document camera, a projector and a computer. These are the tools of the 21 st century classroom that are used to engage the learners and draw them in as they interact with their classmates and the technology that helps make this possible. 9 Technologia Los procesadores de computadoras que recibimos llegaron sin sistemas de operación pero fueron capaces de trabajar Windows 7. Esto nos permitió reemplazar las computadoras viejas de los maestros de la primar con unas funcionando con el sistema actual y software de oficina. En nuestra economía actual sería fácil cuestionar por qué actualizamos tres laboratorios. La Beca Carl Perkins la cual proporciona los fondos para lo que solía llamarse educación vocacional debe utilizarse en parte para asegurar que el equipo que los alumnos utilizan es la última tecnología. Esto asegura que los alumnos de educación profesional y técnica pueden experimentar una experiencia real del mundo de empleo. Las pruebas han llegado a ser uno de los usos mayores de los laboratorios ya que son utilizados en pruebas de nivel estatal así como también es pruebas estandarizadas para la lectura, matemáticas y artes del idioma. También empezamos a utilizar un programa que se llama Imagine Learning el cual utiliza las computadoras para ayudar a los alumnos a mejorar sus habilidades del idioma. Las computadoras no es la única tecnología nueva utilizada aquí en la escuela. Los pizarrones blancos interactivos están siendo más populares y tenemos dos aquí que recibimos sin costo alguno para el distrito y algunos otros que fueron parte de las becas. Los pizarrones blancos interactivos utilizan una computadora, un proyector y un pizarrón a la misma vez para crear una nueva herramienta para los maestros. El sistema es capaz de sentir cuando una lapicera especial es utilizada en el pizarrón y es capaz de proyectar la (tinta digital en el pizarrón aunque no se está utilizando tinta actual. Esto permite a la computadora capturar todo lo que se está escribiendo o dibujando y puede ser salvado para utilizarlo después o imprimirlo. Esta misma lapicera puede controlar la computadora a la que está conectado el pizarrón. El proyector muestra la pantalla de la computadora en el pizarrón y la lapicera actúa como el ratón/controlador electrónico. El maestro(a) entonces puede demostrar cualquier programa en la computadora mientras está parado frente a la clase y mantiene contacto visual. Una cámara documental utilizada con un proyector permite a los maestros mostrar trabajo del alumno, trabajo de arte, o un objeto actual en la pantalla gigante enfrente del salón de clase. Esto permite que la clase siga al maestro(a) cuando está corrigiendo un papel, o observar mientras el maestro muestra algo demasiado pequeño para que toda la clase lo vea sin tener que amontonarse alrededor de la mesa con la esperanza de vislumbrar lo que se está mostrando. Eating for Energy Do your eyelids droop during morning math class? Do you crash on the couch after school? Yawn through your homework? Maybe you re not choosing the right fuel to keep your body and brain running in high gear. If you need an energy boost, try these four tips: 1. Start your day with breakfast. Breakfast fills your empty tank to get you going after a long night without food. And it can help you pay attention in school. Easy-to-make breakfasts include cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night s pizza! Breakfast is especially important on test days! 2. Snack smart. Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups one slice of last night s pizza, a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins or some dry cereal. Here at the elementary we have started a healthy snack/party list, hoping families choose more fresh fruits and vegetables when bringing foods to school to students to share with their classmates. Avoiding the candy-cake-chip-pop foods that are potential causes of disabling diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity helps our students develop healthy eating habits that will last a life time. 3. Eat more grains, fruits and vegetables. These foods give you carbohydrates, which your body and brain use for energy. They also give you vitamins, minerals and fiber. Besides, they taste good! Try foods made from grains such as whole-wheat bread, bagels, pita bread, spaghetti and oatmeal. Bananas, strawberries and melons are some great-tasting fruits, Munch veggies like lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini raw, on a sandwich or in a salad. 4. Don t go too long without eating. Your body needs a steady supply of fuel to run right, so stick with regular meal and snack times. If you re busy and can t stop to eat, grab a banana, a cheese stick or a squeezable low-fat yogurt to keep you going. Methow Arts Artes de Methow The Methow Arts alliance brings high quality art experiences to students in Brewster. The alliance partners with our teachers and brings ideas, expertise, program support, and venues for student artwork to be on permanent and temporary exhibit throughout our school. The Methow Alliance is supported in part by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission, the program serves over 5,000 students in the Brewster, Pateros, Omak (including Pascal Sherman Indian School), Okanogan and Methow School Districts. 11 Another Educational Option for Brewster Students Otra Opción Educativa para Alumnos de Brewster Brewster Alternative High School, Main Street Learning Center or The Learning Center; the old post office building has had many names and many faces over the past fifteen years and we are at it again; hopefully for one last and final time. The doors are open and the hustle and bustle of a wide variety of young people seeking other options to meet their educational needs is coming through the doors. The Brewster School District has made a commitment to meet the needs of all students and in making that commitment have dedicated resources to provide educational alternatives for young people in all walks of life. The new high school officially opened its doors to students on September 6 th with seven students. In just over four weeks we are now at 22 students. Our students come from all walks of life and all backgrounds. Our school consists of former high school dropouts, students who need to retrieve credits, home school students and students whose parents desire another path toward graduating from high school. Our curriculum is online learning based and is fully accredited by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). There are a wide range of options in the curriculum to meet many needs. We offer entry level courses for the student who needs a bridge between junior high and high school, challenging core classes, Honors classes and even Advanced Placement courses for the student who is seeking college credit. Teachers attend MSP to find more ways to engage students The good news in the math department is that teachers are working together to find interesting ways to present math. Last summer Ms. George and Mr. Clark attended the Math and Science Partnership workshop where they heard new ideas for engage students in math. The picture included with this message shows Algebra 2 students gathering data on the relationship between the number of breaths used to fill a balloon and the balloon s length. After gathering the data the students used regression to model the data so that they could use it to make predictions. TL21 Grant buys whiteboards and responders Other good news is that two years ago Ms. George was a recipient of the Teaching and Learning in the 21 st Century grant, which paid for mobile interactive whiteboards in her classroom and Mr. Clark s and a classroom response system for hers. The white boards increase student engagement by making math more visual. Ms. George is using the response system to give students more opportunity to think about math concepts and to share their thinking with other students. MMRE project helps teachers engage students Ms. George is also part of the MMRE project for math teachers from rural areas of Washington State and Idaho. Last week she attended a workshop at WSU where teachers practiced helping students discover math concepts. It has been shown that when students discover math concepts for themselves, they understand them better and remember them more easily. Ms. George tried one of the activities called Choral Counting with her Geometry class this week and is looking forward to learning more ways to engage students. PLCs up and running Throughout the school, teams of teachers are working together to align the curriculum so that students do not miss important concepts. They are sharing ideas for motivating students and helping them learn. Brewster student t attends Math Academy at U of W Last summer Alejandra Cuin attended the Math Academy and the University of Washington. At the Academy Alejandra worked on rigorous math problems and wrote up her answers in engineering format. Continued next page... 12

13 Good News Continued Brewster students are applying to WAS next summer Last summer Ms. George was a chaperone for the WAS (Washington Aerospace Scholars) program in Seattle. The program is for high school students the summer after their junior year. Students who qualify travel to Seattle and spend a week working in teams to design a mission to Mars and participating in a variety of fun science activities. So far about 10 juniors are planning to apply. If accepted, they will do a series of science challenges throughout the year. Students are selected to participate in the summer program based on their work on the challenges. Below are students in last summer s WAS program preparing their rockets for blast off. Maestros Asisten a la Asociación de Matemática y Ciencia MSP para aprender más maneras para cautivar los alumnos La buena noticia en el departamento de matemática es que los maestros están trabajando en conjunto para encontrar maneras interesantes para presentar la matemática. El verano pasado la Srta. George y el Sr. Clark asistieron al taller del MSP donde escucharon nuevas ideas para cautivar los alumnos en la matemática. La Beca TL21 compra pizarrones y contestadores Otra Buena noticia es que hace dos años la Srta. George fue una recipiente de la Enseñanza y Aprendizaje en la Beca 21 st Century, lo cual pago por pizarrones interactivos movibles en su salón de clase y en el del Sr. Clark y un sistema de respuesta de salón de clase para el de ella. Los pizarrones aumentan el enfoque estudiantil al hacer la matemática más visual. La Srta. George está utilizando el sistema de respuestas para dar más oportunidad a los alumnos de pensar sobre conceptos de matemática y para compartir sus pensamientos con otros alumnos. El proyecto MMRE ayuda a maestros a mantener los alumnos ocupados La Srta. George también es parte del proyecto MMRE para maestros de matemática de áreas rurales del Estado de Washington e Idaho. La semana pasada ella asistió un taller en WSU donde los maestros practicaron como ayudar los alumnos a descubrir conceptos de matemática. Se ha demostrado que cuando los alumnos descubren conceptos de matemática por si solos, entienden mejor y los recuerdan más fácilmente. La Srta. George trató una de las actividades llamada Conteo Coral con su clase de Geometría esta semana y espera aprender más maneras de mantener los alumnos ocupados. Comunidades de Aprendizaje Profesional (PLCs) listo y funcionando Durante el año escolar, equipos de maestros trabajan juntos para alinear el plan para que los alumnos no pierdan conceptos importantes. Comparten ideas para motivar los alumnos y los ayudan a aprender. Alumnos de Brewster asisten a la Academia de Matemática en la Universidad de Washington (UW) El verano pasado Alejandra Cuin asistió a la Academia de Matemática y la Universidad de Washington. En la Academia Alejandra trabajó en problemas rigurosos de matemáticas y escribió sus respuestas en un formato de ingeniería. Alumnos de Brewster están aplicando para WAS del próximo verano El verano pasado la Srta. George fue una supervisora para el programa WAS (Alumnos Aeroespaciales de Washington) en Seattle. El programa es para alumnos de la preparatoria para el verano después de su 11º grado. Los alumnos que califican viajan a Seattle y pasan una semana trabajando en equipos para diseñar una misión a Marte y participan en una variedad de actividades divertidas de ciencia. Hasta ahora aproximadamente 10 alumnos del 11º grado tienen planeado aplicar. Si son aceptados, harán una serie de desafíos de ciencia durante el año. 14 PAC Would you like to try something new? That was the question that was asked to a group of parents on Monday evening, October 3, The answer was Yes, 100% Yes! Monday October 3, 2011 was the District s first Parent Advisory Council meeting (PAC). This is a group of parents that have been meeting for 15+ years. This group is well established and well attended. However, the group does not represent our whole student body or our whole community. Research has shown a high correlation between parent involvement in their child s education and the success of that student. That is one of the goals of this group, to strengthen parent involvement in our schools. Another goal is to have great communication. The District works on this issue every year. We are always trying to think of better ways to connect with our students and their families and we realize that communication is a two way street. The core PAC (officers of the Spanish PAC group) started exploring the idea of having an English PAC group and meeting together. It was presented to the members during the first PAC meeting of the year(october 3). The Spanish PAC responded very positively to the idea. To keep with this thinking, the District would like to start an English PAC which would meet at the same time as the Spanish PAC meets. We would meet together in the Library to share what topics that would be gone over. This would help to ensure that communications are going to all of our student s parents, not just part of them. The meetings are held on the first Monday of each month. We would like to start this new venture with all of our parents on November, 7 th at 6:00 in the evening and see how it goes. Este grupo está bien establecido y tiene muy buena asistencia. Sin embargo, el grupo no representa a todo nuestro cuerpo estudiantil o toda nuestra comunidad. La investigación demuestra una alta correlación entre la participación del padre de familia en la educación de su hijo(a) y el éxito de ese alumno. Ese es uno de los objetivos de este grupo, el fortalecer la participación de padres en nuestras escuelas. Otro de los objetivos es tener una gran comunicación. El Distrito trabaja en este tema cada año. Siempre estamos tratando de pensar en mejores maneras de como conectar con nuestros alumnos y sus familias y realizamos que la comunicación es una calle de dos carriles. El núcleo del PAC (oficiales del grupo de PAC en español) comenzó a explorar la idea de tener un grupo del PAC en Ingles y reunirse juntos. La idea se les presento a los miembros durante la primera junta del año de PAC (3 de octubre). El PAC en español respondió muy positivamente a la idea. Para mantener este pensamiento, el Distrito quiere iniciar un PAC en ingles la cual se llevaría a cabo durante el mismo día y horario que la junta en español. Nos reuniremos en la biblioteca para compartir los temas que estaremos presentando. Esto nos ayudara a cerciorarnos que las comunicaciones llegaran a todos los padres de nuestros alumnos, y no solo a parte de ellos. Las juntas se llevan a cabo el primer lunes de cada mes. 16 Box Tops The elementary school is collecting Box Tops again this year and has a goal of earning $2000 by the end of the school year! But this goal can only be reached with everyone s help! It s so easy to do, just follow 3 easy steps: 1) Find Box Tops on tons of products you probably already have at home and often shop for (Betty Crocker baking products, different cereals, Yoplait yogurts, Pillsbury products, school supplies, Ziploc, Kleenex, and Hefty tableware are just a few of many). 2) Clip the Box Tops and attach them to your child s collection sheet that they bring home every month, or you can collect them in a bag. 3) Have your child turn their collection sheet into their teacher at school, or you can bring your bag full of Box Tops and turn them in at the front office at the elementary school! You can also earn Box Tops for your school by shopping online! If you go to the Box Tops website, and go to the tab that says Earn, then click on Shop Marketplace, you will be taken to MANY different stores that you may shop at frequently (Target, Wal-Mart, The Children s Place, Gap, JCPenneys, and many, many more). If you go to one of those stores and purchase something online, make sure to put in Brewster Elementary as your school, and you will earn cash for your school, just like that! 17 Help your high school student with Math Students go to USEI Brewster Alumnos Van al USEI-Brewster On Friday, September 23 rd forty-eight students from the Integrated Science classes were invited to USEI-Brewster Teleport on Brewster Flats for an informative tour, viewing the launch of the satellite Atlantic Bird 7, and a delicious lunch. Mr. Chris Harlow gave a tour of the facility and explained the antennae and how they operate. Students learned about four different types of satellites in preparation for the trip. The launch of the satellite was delayed until Saturday the 24 th due to technical difficulties at sea. Students were able to view a previous satellite launch on the big screen. A representative from Sea Launch spoke about his company and their satellite launching services. During the lunch break students and chaperones were able to ask many questions about USEI and Sea Launch. Between the Sea Launch personnel and the USEI staff the students were exposed to a wonderful experience in our own backyard. Each student received a t-shirt from USEI before they got on the bus to return home. Many thanks go to USEI and Mr. Harlow for the fantastic learning opportunity and phenomenal extras. Our students and staff were treated like dignitaries. We look forward to continuing a relationship with USEI- Brewster Teleport. El viernes, 23 de septiembre 48 alumnos de las clases de Ciencia Integrada fueron invitados a la Electrodinámica de EEUU, S.A. Centro de Telecomunicaciones con Satélites en las afueras de Brewster para una visita informativa, observamos el lanzamiento del satélite Bird 7, y tuvimos un delicioso almuerzo. El Sr. Chris Harlow nos dio un tour de la facilidad y nos explicó sobre las antenas y cómo funcionan. Los alumnos aprendieron cuatro diferentes tipos de satélites en preparación para el viaje. El lanzamiento del satélite se demoró hasta el sábado 24 debido a dificultades técnicas en el mar. Los alumnos pudieron observar en una pantalla gigante un lanzamiento previo de un cohete. Un representante de Sea Launch habló acerca de su compañía y sus servicios lanza satélites. Durante el horario de almuerzo los alumnos y supervisores pudieron hacer todas sus preguntas sobre el USIE y Sea Launch. Entre el personal de Sea Launch y el de USEI los alumnos fueron expuestos a una experiencia maravillosa en nuestros propios terrenos. Are you one of the many parents who has experienced the frustration of trying to help with your student with math that seems nothing like the math you took in high school? If so, I understand how you feel. I spent months before taking the test to become a high school math teacher searching the internet for information about topics that weren t taught when I was in high school and college in the seventies and eighties. My searches made me aware of some resources that I d like to share with you. At first I found webpages about any topic I searched for. I enjoyed skipping through them looking for the one that explained what I was looking for in a style that made sense to me. Later I made an even better discovery. I discovered that YouTube has videos explaining just about every math concept you can imagine. Last summer when I had some free time, I looked for videos on almost all the concepts I would be teaching this year and I put them together into a webpage for four of the classes I teach. I m writing to invite you to use these pages as a starting point to get your student talking about math. You can watch the videos together and talk about what you see. You can search for explanations more to your liking. You can generate questions for your child to bring to class the next day. By getting involved you may be able to increase your student s interest in math. 18 What is School Improvement Qué es Mejoría Escolar? Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is one of the main measures of year to year achievement based on an ever changing assessment system. At first it was called the WASL and tested in grades 4, 8, 10. The name has changed to MSP and HSPE and it is now tested in grades 3-10, with make-ups and other testing opportunities in the 11 th and 12 th grades. The state tests are changing once again to End of Course Assessments in the area of Math. In addition, the state standards that have been tested in the past are now changing to national standards and a completely new battery of assessments will be in place in a few years. If a school or district does not meet AYP, they are placed in School Improvement. There are 5 steps to school improvement. Currently of the schools in the state, of them are in one step of school improvement or another. Step 1- schools must notify parents they are in step 1; they must revise their school improvement plans, and must offer parents the opportunity to transfer their student to a public school of their choice within the same school district. In this first step, choosing to go to another school only applies to school districts that have more than one school within their district. Rural school districts don t have this option, yet they are still required to send out the letter. Therefore, there is sometimes confusion about this issue. Step 2 Same as above, in addition, schools must offer Supplemental Education Services. This service is a non-school sponsored service that s private, for profit, companies can sign students up for one on one tutoring for a limited amount of time. The companies are paid a flat fee per student, by the school district. Step 3 Same as above, in addition, schools/districts must receive outside help to improve Step 4 and 5 Same as above, in addition must restructure staff and schedules. This is an abbreviated look at AYP. You can go to the following website to see the schools in school improvement and step each are in; The federal government is currently in the process of allowing waivers for States to override the current No Child Left Behind Law. So in the end AYP may have a limited life span left. Paso #1- las escuelas deben comunicar a padres de familia que la escuela está bajo paso 1; ellos necesitan revisar sus planes de mejoría escolar, y deben ofrecer a padres de familia la oportunidad de transferir su hijo(a) a una escuela pública de su gusto dentro del mismo distrito escolar En este primer paso, el elegir moverse a otra escuela solo aplica a distritos escolares que tienen más de una escuela dentro de su distrito. Los distritos escolares rurales no tienen esta opción, aun así ellos tienen requerido enviar una carta. Por lo tanto, a veces existe confusión sobre este tema. Paso #2 Lo mismo de arriba, las escuelas deben ofrecer Servicios Educativos Supleméntales. Este no es un servicio patrocinado por la escuela que sea privado, para ganancia, las compañías pueden inscribir alumnos para tutoría uno a uno para una cantidad de tiempo limitado. 19 Eastern Washington University Running Start at Brewster Eastern Washington University Clases Universitarias en Brewster After researching several different college credit options, Brewster High School has teamed with Eastern Washington University to offer College in the High School courses or concurrent enrollment program. Through this teaming process our students will be able to earn college credits free of charge while enrolled full time in Brewster High School coursework. In the past our students have had the opportunity in our Career and Technical Education Program through Tech Prep credits through Wenatchee Valley Community College and will continue to be able to. Eastern Washington University Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) offers college level courses to students while still in high school. Students who choose to enroll in CEP courses will become aware of university course work expectations and will be better prepared for college when they graduate from high school. CEP courses are offered at high school locations. Courses are tuition free to high school Juniors and Seniors through the Running Start Program. Current Course Offerings include two different classes through CWP, Advanced Senior English, and Spanish 3 & 4. As the course list grows our ultimate goal is to someday allow students to graduate with a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree at the same time. Mis investigaciones me pusieron al tanto de algunos recursos que quiero compartir con ustedes. Al principio encontré páginas en la web acerca de cualquier tema que buscaba. Disfruté revisarlas buscando al que me explicara lo que buscaba en un estilo a que yo entendiera. Después hice un descubrimiento mejor. Descubrí que la página web de YouTube tiene videos que explican casi todo concepto de matemática que usted pueda imaginar. El verano pasado cuando tuve un tiempo libre, busque videos sobre casi todo concepto que voy estar ensenando este año y los junte en una página web para cuatro de las clases que enseño. Estoy escribiendo esto para invitarle a que utilice estas páginas como un punto de inicio para hacer que su hijo(a) hablen sobre la matemática. Ustedes pueden juntos ver los videos y hablar sobre lo que ven. Puede buscar explicaciones más a su gusto. Puede generar preguntas para que su hijo(a) las traiga a clase el día siguiente.
