Información del recurso My neighborhood Área curricular: Lengua extranjera: Inglés Educación Secundaria Obligatoria Primer curso Picture. Neighbourhood. Source: Intef.
Students To start off In this resource, Luisa and Miguel will describe the typical places in a city and also some routines. The resource is divided into four activities: Activity 1: You will learn how to differentiate between the types of communities and places which you can find in a city as well as their purposes. Activity 2: You will describe a community or a city using the correct location adverbs. Activity 3: You will describe the routines related to the various places you can find in a community. Final activity: In this final activity, you will analyse and present two different communities that you can find from all around the world. In this educational resource, you will carry out different types of activities: you will work independently and also with classmates, think for yourself, go one step further when you want more information on the topics studied, and finally, assess yourself. These are some of the skills you will practise with these activities: You will learn how to work in groups and how to present your ideas; specifically, you will learn to: Picture. Skills. Source: Mediateca.
present concepts and ideas clearly; analyse and evaluate other people's points of view; develop attitudes that foster reflection and dialogue. You will learn how to use your computer and the Internet to study: using search engines and official websites with useful information; using desktop applications to edit images or to create text documents, audio material and presentations. and you will also learn to make sense of informative texts. You will learn and use vocabulary related to routines and places in a city: using the correct words and expressions; using the Present Simple to describe routines and places; using the correct location adverbs; and you will then be able to understand a dialogue in which people describe cities and routines. You will learn to identify the environment, the surroundings and the architecture of a place. Are you ready? Let's go!
Introduction Illustration. Introduction. Visit Luisa and Miguel's community by doing the following activities: Activity 1. Places in a neighbourhood. Activity 2. Setting places in a neighbourhood. Activity 3. Let's enjoy our neighbourhood! Final activity. Little peas in a huge multicultural city.
Activity 1: Places in a neighbourhood It's your turn: Exploring a neighbourhood Individually, visit the following link: The town. Do all the activities that you find in the section called 'Places'. You will learn a lot of vocabulary about places in a city. Take screenshots of each activity that you do (you may use GIMP), paste them into a text document and then, send it to your teacher by or webmail. Now, visit the following link: Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Field Trips. Screenshot of the resource Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Field Trips. Source: PBS Kids. The link contains several videos about various situations that can happen in different places of a city. Watch the videos and think about the places that appear in each of them. Think also about what those places are for; for example, "In the first video, we can see a cinema. People go to the cinema to watch films". Then, click on the entry "Exploring a neighbourhood", that you can find in the classroom Blog and post a comment in the Blog entry with the solution to the exercise. Remember that you must use the English language in your comment and that you only have 24 hours to solve the activity! Once your time is up, your teacher will post the correct answer in the Blog entry.
It's your turn: Neighbourhoods Screenshot of the resource My neighbourhood. Source: Landcom. In this activity, you will continue working individually. Visit the following link. You will learn how to distinguish the main types of communities that you can find in a city. My neighbourhood. Now, you will create a glog (poster) using Glogster EDU. The poster must include two pictures about two different communities and a description of, at least, five differences between them. Choose them from the communities that you studied when you visited the previous link. You may use GIMP to take a screenshot of the communities. The differences must consist of the presence or absence of certain places in each community. You must also explain what those places are for in the communities. For example: "You can find a cinema in the inner urban area but not in the countryside. People go to the cinema to watch films". Once you have finished, share a link to your glog (poster) with your teacher and your classmates by creating a comment in the Blog entry. Your teacher may ask you to present your glog (poster) on the interactive whiteboard.
Activity 2: Setting places in a neighbourhood Let's practise together: In the town centre Screenshot of the resource The Town. Source: Agrega. Individually, visit the following link: The town. Do all the activities that you find in sections "3. At the station" and "4. In the streets". You will learn the vocabulary and expressions to describe places and to give directions. Take screenshots of each activity that you do (you may use GIMP), paste them into a text document and then, send it to your teacher by or webmail. Once you have learnt how to describe places, work in pairs to create a community by using the following link: Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Build a Neighborhood. You can insert as many objects and buildings as you want in your community. Remember that its name may be either real or fictitious! Once you have created your community, take a screenshot, paste it into an Impress presentation, and share it with your teacher using Google Docs. Finally, you will orally present your work to your teacher and your classmates using the interactive whiteboard. In the presentation, both of you must talk about the
position of 8-10 objects or buildings in your community. Remember to locate the adverbs correctly. Let's practise together: Making decisions In groups of three, you will play the role of a group of architects of a city. Are you ready? First, visit the link Decision maker. Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Decision maker. Screenshot of the resource Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Decision maker. Source: Landcom. The website above shows some cases in which people want to build different types of places but, depending on their location, such places may affect other people or spaces in the city. Your task, as a group of architects, must consist of analysing each choice, discussing the advantages and disadvantages and deciding the most suitable location of the new places. You don't have to answer the questions that appear in each case. Some aspects to assess the advantages and disadvantages of a specific choice may
be the following: access to public transport, pollution, overshadowing, proximity to a car park, safety, and others. In order to show your decision-making process, your group will create and share a text document using Google Docs. The document must contain the opinion of every member of the group, the final solution for each case, and some good reasons for making this decision. For example, "The high rise apartment building must be in the centre of the city because it is close to other facilities (shops, the railway station...) and also because it receives much sunlight". Do not forget to use appropriate structures and correctly locate the adverbs in your explanations and opinions. Once you have finished, share the text document with your teacher using Google Docs. Finally, your teacher will organize a debate in which all the groups must present a solution for each case. You must discuss every solution and agree on the best one.
Activity 3: Let's enjoy our neighbourhood! It's your turn: On my way home Screenshot of the resource The band. Source: Agrega. Now, you will work individually. Visit the following link: The band. Do only the activities that you find in the section called "Dan's daily life". You will learn vocabulary and structures related to daily habits or routines. Take screenshots of each activity that you do (you may use GIMP), paste them into a text document and then, send it to your teacher by or webmail. Now, you can use this picture:
This picture contains a map of a city and also a list of tags with the name of different places. You must create a community pasting the tags into the map. Then, describe 5 or 6 weekly routines related to the places that you pasted in your community. For example, "I usually play tennis in the sports centre. The sports centre is in the Second Avenue and it is between the hospital and the city hotel". Finally, share the map and the description with your teacher using Google Docs.
Let's practise together: When I look out of my window... Illustration. When I look out of my window... In this activity, you will work in pairs. First, you and your classmate must edit the maps that you created in the previous activity. Remove some of the tags related to the places that you mentioned in your description from the map. Second, record your description in an audio file using Audacity. Then, share your edited maps and the audio file with your classmate using Google Docs. Finally, fill in the gaps in your classmate's map following the instructions that you can find in his or her description. Remember that you only need to write the name of the missing places on the map. Write the solution in the shared text document but remember to activate the "track changes" option in Google Docs to let your teacher see the changes that both of you have made in the text. Once both of you have finished, share the text documents and the audio files with your teacher using Google Docs and post them in the classroom Blog.
Self-evaluation Before starting the final activity, you will check what you have learnt throughout all the activities.

Final activity Illustration. I feel so fortunate! Task: Little peas in a huge multicultural city In this activity, you will work in groups of four. Are you ready? Visit the following link: Test two. Ilustración. My neighbourhood. Fuente: Landcom. Do all the activities that you find in the link, except the last one (6. Write). You will
revise the contents that you studied throughout the entire resource. Take screenshots of each activity that you do (you may use GIMP), paste them into a text document and then, send it to your teacher by or webmail. Now, you will create a Photo Peach presentation where you will analyse two different communities. First, discuss and choose two different communities from around the world. They can belong to the same city, region, country, etc. and they must be totally opposed. For example, the first community can be a rural community and the second one can be a community from a highly developed country. Second, create the second community using any of the web applications below. Your presentation must contain some screenshots of the community from different perspectives. Neighbourhood Observer. Neighbourhood Planner. Third, use Google Docs to create and share a text document with the analysis of both communities. Activate the "track changes" option to let your teacher see the changes that all the members of your group have made in the text. The analysis of each community must include the following information: A representative picture of both communities. You may use GIMP to take screenshots. An analysis of the services that each community offers: if there is a school, a cinema, etc. An analysis of the daily life of people from each community. You can find some pictures by visiting the following links: Banco de imágenes y sonidos (Intef). Buscador de imágenes Creative Commons. Banco de imágenes Pics4 Learning. Fourth, record the analysis of both communities in an audio file using Audacity. And finally, create a Photo Peach presentation that must include an image of the
two communities, the screenshots of the second community that you created, and a summary with the main points of your analysis. Once you have finished, create a folder in Google Docs including the text document and the audio file. Share the folder with your teacher. Illustration. Neighbourhood. Source: Landcom. You will use the interactive whiteboard to show your work to your teacher and the whole class. Then, each student will vote for the best presentation. The teacher will publish the winning presentation (together with the audio) in the classroom Blog.

It's your turn: Exploring a neighbourhood Ilustración. El vecindario. Fuente: Intef. The Town.
My neighbourhood.
Solucionario de la actividad 1 It's your turn: Exploring a neighbourhood A continuación se propone la solución a la tarea planteada: Por orden, de izquierda a derecha: "In the first video, we can see a doctor's office. We go to the doctor to check our health and to treat diseases. In the second video, we can see a music classroom. We go to the music classroom to learn how to play an instrument. In the third video, we can see a zoo. We go to the zoo to visit animals. In the fourth video, we can see a museum. We go to the museum to learn about art. In the fifth video, we can see a theatre. We go to the theatre to watch a play".
It's your turn: Neighbourhoods A continuación es posible consultar un ejemplo de solución a la tarea: You can find a cinema in the inner city but not in the countryside. People go to the cinema to watch films. Buildings in the country haven't got more than two floors and they are much taller in the urban area. People live in buildings. The facilities and services (such as, shops ) are not as diverse as they are in inner urban areas. People use them to buy food, to send a letter You can find one school in the countryside but many schools in the inner urban area. Children go to school to learn.
Let's practise together: In the town centre Ilustración. La ciudad. Fuente: Intef. At the station" y "4. In the streets" del siguiente enlace: The Town.
Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Build a Neighborhood.
"The school is near the main road. There is a bus stop near the school. Next to the school, there are some houses. There is a tree between the school and a house. The bus is in front of the bus stop. There is a wood behind the school. There are some pinetrees behind the houses. There is a dog between two houses". A: In my opinion, we can place the high building in front of the park because it is near the city. B: I think it is not a good idea because it overshadows the park, and people go to the park to enjoy the sun and the nature. C: I think we can place it in the centre of the city because it is close to facilities and services". "The high rise apartment building must be in the centre of the city because it is close to other facilities (shops, the railway station...) and because it receives much sunlight throughout the day. It is also near the main road".
Actividad 3: Let's enjoy our neighbourhood! It's your turn: On my way home El alumnado accederá al enlace "The band" para adquirir vocabulario y estructuras empleados a la hora de describir hábitos y rutinas. Solo realizará las actividades del apartado "Dan's daily life": The band.
Un ejemplo sería: "I usually play tennis in the sports centre. The sports centre is between the hospital and the city hotel in Fourth Avenue". Let's practise together: When I look out of my window... Ilustración. Mi vecindario. Fuente: Pics4learning.
Solucionario de la actividad 3 It's your turn: On my way home A continuación es posible obtener un ejemplo de solución a la tarea: I usually play tennis in the sports centre. The sports centre is in the Second Avenue and it is between the hospital and the city hotel. I go to school every day. The school is in front of the sports centre. I have lunch in a restaurant. It is next to the school, in Ground Street. At weekends, I go jogging to the park. It is in front of the bakery, in First Avenue. Once a month, I visit my grandmother. I go to the railway station to take the train. Let's practise together: When I look out of my window...
Test two.
Vecindario urbano. "The first community is a rural community. This community is surrounded by nature. People do not live in houses but in shelters. There is not a hospital but the doctor visits the community once a week. There aren't any schools and children must walk a lot to arrive at the nearest one. People usually work in the countryside to get some food. They go to sleep early. The second community is located in a highly developed country. There are many tall buildings and many facilities. There are several schools and a hospital. People use private or public transport to move from one place to another. They usually enjoy their free time watching TV, playing sports or surfing the Internet".
