9 AFTER DISMISSAL Students are expected to leave the school building immediately after dismissal unless they have a scheduled appointment (s), an extracurricular activity, or wish to meet with a teacher for assistance. SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS In case of emergency or due to inclement weather, NO SCHOOL / DELAYED OPENINGS, or EARLY DISMISSAL ANNOUNCEMENTS will be made via Connect Ed and on the following radio and / or television stations. RADIO STATIONS: WSRS WBZ WTAG 96.1 FM 1030 AM 580 AM 1280 AM TELEVISION STATIONS: WBZ TV CHANNEL 4, WCVB TV CHANNEL 5, WHDH TV CHANNEL 7 If school is delayed, we will generally delay 2 hours. It is possible that the delay could be longer or shorter depending on the emergency or weather. If school is released early, due to emergency, the same stations will be contacted thirty (30) minutes prior to the release of the students. Parents will also be notified thirty (30) minutes prior to the release of the students. 10 What are the school hours? The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m. No child should arrive before 8:20 a.m. A child arriving after 8:45 a.m. must be accompanied by an adult when reporting to school. The hours for Kindergarten are 9:15 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. No child should be in school before 9:00 a.m. When entering the building for any reason, you must stop and sign in at the Office. You will be required to wear a visitor s badge and sign out before you leave the building. Dismissal Procedures Safety procedures are strictly enforced to ensure the safety of our children. Bus Students If your child rides a bus, they will not be dismissed as a walker after 2:40 unless a note has been sent in. Once your bus is assigned, you may NOT ride another bus for 1 day circumstances such as play dates, parties, meetings etc. Parents of Kindergarten Students: An adult must be visible for all Kindergarten pick ups and drop offs. Pick Up & Drop Off ****The loop in front of the school is a designated FIRE LANE! You Cannot Park and leave your car. During Pick-Up & Drop off, this is a single lane access and parents must constantly pull forward as far as possible.***** Kindergarten Pick Up: Adults picking up Kindergartners must park in a legal spot on Church St. (not the Fire Lane) and walk to the front entrance to receive their child from the teacher and / or assistant. Grades 1-3 Pick-Up: Stay to the right and DO NOT exit your vehicle; your child will walk to the car. Ease into the left hand lane for leaving the school only. No child will be allowed to cross to the left lane for pick-up. Children will only be dismissed to persons listed on their emergency form, in emergency situations ONLY, written changes will be accepted. No verbal transportation changes are ever allowed. A note signed by a parent/legal guardian, along with a photo ID of the person dismissing, must be produced by 2:40. Clinton Elementary School reserves the right to enforce police retention for children not picked up by 4:00 p.m. Attendance All students are expected to attend school on each regularly scheduled day of the current school year as appointed by the School Committee. All parents/guardians are required to do the following when a child is going to be absent from school: 1. Call the morning of the day the student is out to report absenteeism to school officials. The telephone number is to report an absence. 2. On the day the child returns to school, a note explaining the reason for absence should be delivered to the Office. 3. Any parent/guardian requesting homework must do so by 10:00 a.m. and may pick up the work after the school day. School Breakfast and Lunch Program An outline of the breakfast and lunch program will be sent home with each child in September. Included in the packet of information will be a form to be completed by the parent/guardian to determine reduced/free meal eligibility, along with the daily and weekly costs of each meal. 10

Cuando Traen Los Niños a la Escuela & Cuando Los Recogen ****El área frente a la escuela está designado para los Bomberos! No se puede estacionar y dejar su auto. Durante el tiempo de dejar a los niños o recogerlos, ésta área es de un solo carril y los Padres necesitan adelantar su auto constantemente cuando sea posible. ***** Recogiendo Kindergarden : Adultos recogiendo tienen que estacionar en una área legal en Church St. (no en el carril de Emergencia) y caminar a la entrada de la escuela para recibir al niño que estará con un miembro del personal. Recogiendo Grades 1-3 : Quédese en su carro en el carril derecho (No salga de su auto); su hijo caminará a su auto. Cuando tenga a su hijo, intégrese lentamente al carril izquierdo para irse. No se permitirá que ningún niño cruce al carril izquierdo para tener acceso a un auto. Los niños solamente serán despachados a las personas listadas en la forma de emergencia., SOLO en emergencias, cambios son permitidos solo por escrito. No se aceptan cambios en la transportación verbales. Solamente se aceptan cambios firmados por los padres o guardianes legales con una identificación con retrato. La persona que venga a recoger al niño también necesita una identificación con retrato. Esto tiene que hacerse antes de las 2:40. La Escuela Elemental de Clinton se reserva el derecho de solicitar la policía para niños que no son recogidos antes de las 4:00 p.m. Asistencia Se espera que todos los estudiantes asistan a la escuela regularmente en los días programados para el año escolar, según es designado por el Comité Escolar. Se requiere que todos los padres / guardianes sigan las siguientes reglas cuando su hijo (a) vaya a estar ausente: Llamar por la mañana del día en que el estudiante estará ausente para reportar dicha ausencia al oficial escolar El día que el niño (a) regresa a la escuela, debe presentar una nota a la oficina principal explicando el motivo de la ausencia. Programa de Desayuno y Almuerzo Escolar Un resumen del programa de desayuno y almuerzo será enviado a los hogares con cada niño (a) en el mes de Septiembre. En el paquete de información se incluirá un formulario para ser completado por el padres / guardián, con el fin de determinar su elegibilidad para recibir los alimentos a precio reducido ó gratis, junto con el costo diario y semanal de cada alimento. 11

12 THUNDERSTORM DISMISSAL PROCEDURE Please note that in the event of a severe thunderstorm happening between 2:45 and 3:15, all children will be held inside the school until the storm passes. Bus students will wait downstairs, and walkers will be in the front foyer. This will cause a slight delay in the time that the children usually get home. If you pick up your child, you will have to come in the building and sign your child out if you wish to take them during the storm. Otherwise we will hold them until the bulk of the storm passes and then we will release the walkers out the front door and we will start rolling the buses. Esto causará una demora en el despacho de los niños. Si usted quisiera recoger a su hijo de todas maneras mientras tenemos la tormenta, tendrá que entrar a la escuela para firmarlos en la oficina. Tan pronto pase la tormenta y los niños no se encuentren en peligro, despacharemos a ambos grupos. 12

13 PBIS! POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT Clinton Elementary School is pleased to continue an exciting program at CES this year. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, and the goal is to increase, acknowledge and reward students positive behavior choices. Their philosophy is to improve the social behavior and climate of the school which will in turn impact academic instruction. A PBIS Team was formed with representatives from every grade level, and they worked very hard to pull the program together. We implemented a few small initiatives such as The Golden Broom Award, Student of the Month, and End of Year Parade. During the implementation of this program, all staff members will be modeling, discussing and practicing appropriate school behavior. Students will be randomly rewarded by staff when they are caught demonstrating positive behaviors. Children will receive a honey ticket for their positive behavior which will be entered into weekly classroom and monthly school wide raffles to win prizes and activities. We also have adopted a CES mascot which aligns with our PBIS goals. Our mascot is a Bumble Bee named Stinger (a name chosen by the children in a school-wide vote). The School Wide Behavior Expectations are as follows: Bee Safe Bee Respectful Bee Responsible We are hoping to increase and encourage positive behavior, decrease negative behavior, and foster a feeling of community within the school. We are very excited to continue this program! PBIS! INTERVENCION Y APOYO POSITIVO AL COMPORTAMIENTO La Escuela Elemental de Clinton está alegre de anunciar el programa que estamos implementando este año escolar. Intervención y Ayuda en Comportamiento, y su objetivo es aumentar, reconocer y premiar a los estudiantes que escogen portarse positivamente. Su filosofía es mejorar el comportamiento social que a la vez tendrá un impacto en la instrucción académica. El pasado año escolar se formó un Equipo con representantes de cada nivel de grado, Implementamos unas iniciativas pequeñas, como el Premio de la Escoba Dorada. Durante la implementación de este programa, todos los miembros del personal modelaron, discutieron y participaron en comportamiento positivo apropiado en la escuela. Los estudiantes van a ser reconocidos al azar cuando los cogen demostrando comportamiento positivo. Los niños recibirán un boleto por su comportamiento positivo el cuál será incluido en una rifa en la cuál podrán ganar premios y actividades. También hemos adoptado la mascota de CES la cuál alinea con nuestros objetivos de PBIS. Nuestra mascota es una Abeja que se llama Stinger (el nombre fué escogido por un voto sometido por todos los estudiantes de la escuela). La Expectaciones de Comportamiento a Nivel de Toda La Escuela : Bee Safe ( Mantente Seguro ) Bee Respectful ( Mantente Respetuoso ) Bee Responsible (Mantente Responsable ) Esperamos que aumente y estimule el comportamiento positivo, disminuya el comportamiento negativo, y promueva un sentido de comunidad en la escuela. Estamos muy alegres y confiados de seguir con este programa! 13

14 BULLYING Bullying is the act of intentionally causing harm to others through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion, such as manipulation. Cyber-bullying is an unwelcome electronic act where a student feels coerced, intimidated, harassed or threatened and, under the circumstances may cause: 1) physical harm to a student, or 2) disruptive or hostile school environment. The Clinton Public Schools prohibits bullying on school grounds, property adjacent to school grounds, and school sponsored or school related activities. Also prohibited is bullying that does not take place on school grounds, but creates a hostile environment at school for the victim, infringes on the victim s rights at school, or materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of the school. Consistent with the requirements of SB 2404, An Act Relative to Bullying (Section 1, Ch.71,37 O) in Schools, all students will receive prevention activities that are designed to create and maintain safe, disciplined and drug-free environments which would include bullying. Based on information reported to the school administrator concerning a report of bullying, the administrator will follow proper procedure as outlined in the Clinton Elementary Bullying Prevention & Intervention Plan, which can be found on the Clinton Public School Website. 14

15 INTIMIDAR Intimidar es el acto de causar daño a otros mediante intimidación verbal, asalto físico, u otros métodos no tan violentos, de coerción como manipulación. Intimidación cibernética es un acto electrónico malicioso donde un estudiante se siente coercionado, intimidado, acosado o amenazado, y dentro de estas circunstancias puede causar : 1) daño físico al estudiante o 2) un medioambiente hostil y perturbador. Las Escuelas Públicas de Clinton prohíben intimidación en la propiedad de la escuela, propiedades adyacentes a la escuela y en cualquier actividad patrocinada por nuestras escuelas. También se prohíbe intimidación que aunque no suceda en las escuelas, pero envés crea un ambiente hostil en la escuela para la victima, infringe en los derechos de la victima en la escuela o materialmente y sustancialmente interrumpe el proceso de educación o de la operación de orden en la escuela. Consistentemente con los requisitos de SB 2404, Acta Relativa a Intimidación (Sección 1, Capt..71, 37 O) en las Escuelas, todos los estudiantes recibirán actividades de prevención que están designadas a crear y mantener seguridad, disciplina y un ambiente libre de drogas, el cual incluye intimidación. Basado en información reportada al administrador de la escuela concerniente a un reportaje de intimidación, el / la administrador seguirá el proceso debido como estipulado en el Plan de Prevención e Intervención de Intimidación de la Escuela Elemental de Clinton. 15

16 What Immunizations are Required? No Shots No School! In accordance with Chapter 76, Chapter 15, Massachusetts General Law, parents must provide documentation of immunizations or have on file a religious or medical exemption. The following vaccines are required for entry into kindergarten, unless there is a medical exemption signed by a physician, or a religious exemption signed by a parent/guardian: (5) DPT, (4) Polio, (2) MMR,(3) Hep B, (4) HIB, (2) Varivax, or proof of chicken pox. A lead screen is also required for kindergarten admission. What is the Policy for Contagious Illnesses? Flu/Virus/Fever over 100F: May return once the fever is under 100F without Tylenol/Motrin for 24 hours. Vomiting or Diarrhea: May return if no vomiting or diarrhea for 12 hours. Skin Conditions: Impetigo, Ringworm, Scabies, Pink Eye and other unidentified rashes need to be evaluated by a physician and have a note stating it is not contagious. Can my Child Take Medicine at School? If possible, parents are advised to give medication at home and on a schedule other than during school hours. If a student s physician determines that a medication must be given during school hours, the medication will be administered by the school nurse. CHILDREN MAY NOT BRING ANY MEDICATION TO SCHOOL Medication must be brought to the health office by an adult. Medication must be in the original container with the pharmacy label. Parent / Guardian will sign a consent form in the nurse s office. Doctor s order is required each school year. Medicine left in the nurses office at the end of the school year will be disposed of in June. Parents will be reminded via Connect Ed. When having a prescription filled at the drug store, ask the pharmacist to label a second bottle to be left at school.. Health & Wellness Protocol In accordance with the Federal Law SEC.204. Local Wellness Policy and following the district s Health and Wellness Administrative Protocol, we will be adhering to their guidelines including: Hand washing guidelines will be followed. All children in grades K-12 will have the opportunity to be physically active on a regular basis. ALL CELEBRATIONS WILL BE FOOD FREE, INCLUDING BIRTHDAYS. The building principal and vice principal will promote no sharing or trading food or utensils in school. ANY GROUP THAT USES THE SCHOOL FOR ANY AFTER SCHOOL EVENT THAT INVOLVES FOOD MUST CLEAN THE ROOM COMPLETELY AFTER THE EVENT IS OVER. Massachusetts Comprehensive Growth Screening It is important to measure and monitor growth over time in all children as an indicator of health and development (US Preventive Services Task Force, 2005). The goal of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health s (MDPH) Comprehensive Growth Screening Program is the improvement in the health and well-being of school-age children in Massachusetts so that they are healthy and ready to learn. Consistent with this goal, schools are required by law to provide health screening (M.G.L. Chapter 71, Section 57 and 105 CMR ). Body Mass Index (BMI) provides a guideline based on weight, height, sex and age to assess your child s health. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has established the following benchmarks: Underweight--<5th percentile Within normal range--</= 25 th percentile to < 85 th percentile Overweight-- >/= 85 th to < 95 th percentile Obese-- >/= 95 th percentile The Department of Public Health requires students in grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 to participate in the Growth Screening Program. The results will be mailed to you in the Spring. You are encouraged to share this information with your child s primary care physician. 16

17 Qué Vacunas son Requeridas? No Vacunas No Escuela! De acuerdo con el Capítulo 76, Capítulo 15 de la Ley General de Massachusetts, los padres /guardianes deben presentar un registro de vacunas, ó presentar una excepción médica ó religiosa. Las siguientes vacunas son requeridas para la admisión a kindergarten, a menos que exista una excepción médica firmada por su doctor, ó una excepción religiosa firmada por el padre / guardián. Para poder matricularse en el distrito escolar, Kindergarten a 4to grado, todos los niños deben tener los siguiente: Examen físico actualizado, (5) DPT, (4) Polio, (2) MMR, (2) Hep. B, (2) HIB (2) Varivax ó prueba de haber tenido varicela / chicken pox. También se requiere un examen del nivel de plomo en la sangre para la admisión a Kindergarten. Mi Hijo (a) Puede Tomar Medicinas en la Escuela? Si es posible, se aconsejamos a los padres / guardianes que administren las medicinas en casa en lugar de hacerlo durante las horas escolares. Si el doctor del estudiante determina que la medicina debe ser administrada durante las horas escolares, la enfermera de la escuela administrará dicha medicina. LOS NIÑOS NO PUEDEN TRAER EL MEDICAMENTO A LA ESCUELA El medicamento tiene que ser traído a la oficina de la enfermera por un por un adulto. El medicamento tiene que estar en su envase original con las instrucciones de la farmacia. Los padres / guardianes firmarán una Forma de Permiso para Administrar Medicinas, en la oficina de la enfermera cada año escolar. Las medicinas que se queden en la oficina de la enfermera al final de año escolar, será botadas en Junio. Les recordaremos a los padres via Connect Ed. Cuando vayan a llenar la receta a la farmacia, solicite al farmacéutico que le de un segundo envase con las instrucciones para la escuela. PROTOCOL DE SALUD Y BIENESTAR De acuerdo con la Ley Federal SEC.204. y la Política Local de Bienestar y siguiendo el Protocol Administrativo de Salud y Bienestar, estaremos siguiendo los reglamentos que incluyen: Las reglas para lavarse las manos serán impuestas. Todos los niños en los grados K-12 tendrán la oportunidad de tener actividades físicas regularmente. TODAS LAS CELEBRACIONES SERAN SIN COMIDA, INCLUYENDO LOS CUMPLEAÑOS. 18 Student Assessment/Parent Conferences An Open House to meet your child s teacher and see their classroom is held within the first few weeks of September. Parent conferences are held in January. Every effort should be made to meet with your child s teacher to discuss his/her progress. Report card schedules are as follows: Kindergarten report cards are issued in November (progress report), April, and June 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades report cards are issued in November, February, April and June MCAS reading assessment is administered to grade 3 in May, and the Math assessment in May. Promotions to the next grade level will be based upon the success of the children attaining the skills based on the benchmarks aligned with the Department of Education and the curriculum guides. Parents of children who do not achieve the grade level requirements will meet the building principal to discuss the retention. Dress Code The dress code for the warm weather is as follows: No short shorts or short skirts Knee length are preferred. No tank tops, halter tops or spaghetti straps unless a tee shirt is worn underneath. No HEELIES are allowed in the school. (These are the sneakers with the wheels in the heels). No Flip flops are allowed in school Please make sure sandals do not have heels and are safe. Permanent Records According to the Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the parent/guardian or student age 18 or over is permitted to inspect and review educational records relating to the student. Change of Information It is imperative that the school office be notified immediately of a change of address, home or office telephone number, or of a change in emergency information during the academic year. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to notify the school of any change of information. This is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of your child. How can I become involved? Become an active member of the PTA. Volunteer to become a member of school council. The school council is a representative committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers and community members. Become a school volunteer. A volunteer orientation program is held at the beginning of each school year. Is there a School Based Day Care Program? 19 Conferencias de Padres / Maestros La bienvenida para que conozcan a los maestros y para ver los salones será en las primeras semanas de Septiembre. Las conferencias con los padres será en Enero. En esta conferencia ustedes se reunirán con los maestros para discutir el progreso de sus hijos. El itinerario para la entrega de Reporte de Notas es como sigue: Kindergarden Reporte de Progreso en Noviembre, Reporte de Notas en Marzo y Junio 1ro, 2do y 3er grados Reporte de Notas en Noviembre, Febrero, Abril and Junio MCAS evaluación de lectura para el 3er grado será Mayo, y el de Matemáticas en Mayo. Las promociones para el próximo año escolar son basadas en el éxito obtenido por el estudiante aprendiendo las destrezas basadas en guías alineadas con el currículo del Departamento de Educación. Los padres de los niños que no obtienen los requerimientos del nivel del grado se reunirán con la principal para discutir la retención. Código de Vestimenta El código de vestimenta en la época de temperatura caliente es como sigue: No se permiten pantalones o faldas cortos se recomienda a la rodilla. No se permiten camisas estilo tank, amarradas al cuello, o de amarre finito a menos que se use una camisa debajo (T-shirt) No se permiten camisas con escote bajito a menos que tengan camisas debajo. No se permiten zapatos deportivos (sneakers) con ruedas en el talón. No se permiten flip flops. Asegúrese que las sandalias son seguras y sin tacos. Keeping my hands, feet, head and all objects out of the aisles and inside the bus at all times. 6. Speaking in a normal voice while riding; I will not yell or make distracting noises. 7. Refraining from eating and drinking on the bus. 8. Refraining from throwing any objects on the bus. 9. Respecting others, I will not tease or make fun of others. I will not use physical behavior toward others. 10. Making others feel welcome; I will not save seats or force someone to move from their seat. 11. Reporting any Dangerous or Destructive ( D & D ) behavior should be reported immediately to the bus driver or the Guidance Counselor. HOW TO REPORT A D & D ON THE BUS Notify the bus driver of the behavior or Notify the Guidance Counselor if the principal or vice principal are not available please leave a message at the front office or ask your teacher to inform the principal or vice principal of the situation immediately. ALL D & D BEHAVIOR MUST BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY. I understand that if my child does not follow the above requirements for safe behavior on the bus, the possible consequence may include change of assigned seat or temporary bus suspension. 20
