So clap along. I hope that you are all doing well and are in the process of tying up loose ends within your units. NOW is the time according to your bylaws to hold your elections for 2014/2015 school year. Each unit must have a president, secretary, and treasurer. The responsibility of the nominating committee is to select the best-qualified available person for each office. Your nomination committee MUST post the nominee slate thirty (30) days advance written notice of the election meeting must be provided to the membership (Association Meetings). You MUST give your association members a 30 day notice that you are holding elections. Notice can come in the form of school flyers, Connect Ed, marquee notification, to morning announcements. Please submit your new officer contact information as soon as you have your elections and forward to the district office by May 1, California State PTA will be sending out the summer mailing which contains valuable information. We will enter your officer s names into the PTA-EZ system which is how the state retrieves your mailing information. If they do not have your information you will not receive the summer mailing packet. Teacher Appreciation is coming up and the following teachers have been recognized by State PTA as "PTA Teachers Making a Difference" Honor Roll Recipients: Sandra Beltran-Mata, Southeast MS PTSA, Pacific Clare Gardner, Marquez Charter, Westside Brooke Newman, Marquez Charter, Westside Sandra Gomez, Hawaiian Ave, Lomita/San Pedro Joyce Hsin, City Terrace, Atlantic/Griffith Sandra Martinez, Wilmington Jr. High, Gateway Leslie Nehring, 156th St, Gateway The teachers will receive a certificate of nomination, recognition on an honor roll banner that will be displayed at the CAPTA Convention, & an opportunity to be selected to have their story featured in the CAPTA Publication. The California State PTA understands the importance of staff appreciation in building a stronger home-toschool connection. Staff/Volunteer Appreciation: PTA resources may be used for hospitality for staff/volunteer appreciation as long as it does not represent a significant amount. Not of a significant amount is defined by the IRS as an amount that does not exceed 5 percent of the

2 nonprofit organization s annual budget. PTA funds cannot be used to purchase personal gifts for staff or volunteers, such as gift cards. Acceptable expenditures may include a staff lunch as long as the expenses follow the above guidelines and the expenses are approved by the membership. (Refer to the on-line toolkit). Legacy Award: We have three units this year who have weathered the storm and stuck together for 90 years to be the Voice for all Children. The California State PTA annually recognizes units, councils and districts that achieve a special anniversary milestone as a chartered PTA association in good standing. All three units were chartered on 1/01/1924 that s 90 years! Let s celebrate Palisades ES Charter School PTA - President Lee Ann Day, University HS PTSA - President Margaret Lim, & 3 rd St ES PTA- President Bonnie Chavez. The Legacy PTA receives Recognition certificate from CAPTA, Letter of congratulations from CAPTA, Legacy PTA ribbon for convention attendees, and Recognition at convention for this milestone accomplishment. 3 REPORT FROM THE PARLIAMENTARIAN Alexandra Navarro REPORT FROM THE MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP CHAIR Paul Buckley HAVE YOU HAD YOUR ELECTION? All local units must prepare to have their election of officers in the month of MARCH. Article V of your local bylaws explains who your officers are, how to elect a nominating committee, and what is needed to be an officer. Election shall be held by ballot at the annual election meeting in MARCH, but if there is but one candidate for any office, the ballot for that office may be dispensed with and the election held by voice vote. Officers shall serve for a term of one (1) year and assume their duties on July 1. The term ends on June 30. The president-elect may attend the California State PTA convention if funds are available and the members of the association vote out the funds for the convention. The president-elect may call a meeting of the officers-elect and principal of the school, or a representative appointed by the principal, as necessary to ratify the appointments of appointed officers and chairmen of committees, to fill vacancies on the board-elect and make plans for the coming year s work. Vacant offices that are unfilled after the election may be filled by the board-elect. Vacancies in any office for an unexpired term may be filled by a person elected by the executive board. (check the bylaws.) The duties of the president, executive vice president, recording secretary and corresponding secretary (office may be combined), treasurer, financial secretary, auditor, historian and parliamentarian are in the bylaws under Article VI. Once the election of officers is held, please send the list of officers names, addresses, phone numbers and addresses to Los Angeles Tenth District PTSA office. The Music Scholarship Program- deadline is March 21 st to submit applications. The audition week will be April 7, 2014 thru April 11, 2014 a letter has been sent to the Principles and Music Teachers with a detailed pamphlet and application form. The program is funded by donations to The Los Angeles Tenth District PTSA- Music Scholarship Program. The amount that is collected in contributions determines the number of scholarships. Lynn Ishii, art teacher at University High, has received another $500 Continuing Education Scholarship for Teachers from the California State PTA. Lynn has served as the Reflections Chairman for University High PTSA for many years and is always supportive of PTSA activities. She publicizes the Reflections program to the students and teachers, distributes the rules, sets up a Reflections promotional display, collects the entries, makes sure that all the entry forms are complete, and helps with the PTSA Reflections Luncheon for participating students and teachers. When the Reflections entries forwarded to Tenth District are returned, Lynn exhibits some of these entries in the display case next to the main office. In addition, she helps the PTSA promote Grad Nite and secure chaperones from the faculty and staff. What a treasure! Congratulations, once again, on receiving a scholarship! Lynn also received an Honorary Service Award from the University High PTSA in January in recognition of her commitment to Reflections and the PTSA.

4 REPORTE DE LA PARLAMENTARIA Alexandra Navarro HA TENIDO USTED SUS ELECCIÓNES? Todas las unidades locales deben haber tenido sus elecciónes de funcionarios en el mes de MARZO. Artículo V en sus estatutos locales explica quiénes son los funcionarios, cómo elegir un comité y lo que se necesita para ser un funcionario. Las elecciónes deben ser tenidas por votación en la reunión anual de elecciónes en MARZO, pero si hay pero un candidato para cualquier funcionario, la votación para ese funcionario puede ser prescindir de y la elección tenido por voto de voz. Los funcionarios fungirán por el término de uno (1) año y asumirá sus deberes en Julio 1. El termino se termina en Junio 30. El presidentelecto puede asistir a la convención del Estado de California PTA si hay fondos disponibles y los miembros de la asociación votan a favor de los fondos para la convención. El president- electo puede convocar sesiones de los directivos electos y al director de la escuela, o a un representante designado por el director, como sea necesario para ratificar el nombramiento de los funcionarios y directivos de comités nombrados, y para planificar el trabajo del año siguiente. Si alguno de los cargos permanece vacante después de las elecciónes puede ser asignado por la junta electa. Vacantes en cualquier funcionario por un término no caducado puede ser llenado por una persona elegida por la junta ejecutiva. (verifique sus estatutos). 5 TENTH DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA PTSA 2014 FOUNDERS DAY INSPIRATION Arrangement formatted by Pat Hansen and Dana Hansen LCFF & LCAP YOUR VOICE MATTERS TALKING POINTS 1. This is an exciting time for our kids and our schools! There s a new law for funding schools called LCFF (the Local Control Funding Formula). 2. As a parent, your voice matters more than ever. LCFF requires school districts to involve parents in planning and decision making. From that first meeting in Marietta, Georgia on February 17, 1897 at Marietta High School by our founder Alice McLellan Birney who said: I do not believe that happiness is calculated to make us selfish. On the contrary the highest happiness develops sympathy for less blessed than ourselves Joining with co-founder Phoebe Apperson Hearst who said: The National Congress of Mothers, irrespective of creed, color or condition stands for all parenthood, childhood, homehood. We celebrate the Founding of the PTSA by including Selena Sloan Butler who in 1926 founded The National Colored Congress of Parents and Teachers. The PTA/PTSA has welcomed and embraced all who are willing to help improve the education and welfare of our young. Joining in that spirit is our first African-American Male PTA President: Otha Thornton installed June We the members of this association should cherish and look forward to the challenges the future brings and thank God or your entity of Inspiration for the privilege and opportunity to help and assist our children with their childhood education and upbringing to create better adults for the future of this great country of ours and the world. For your children to graduate and have a better future, your school and community must work together. 3. LCFF shifts spending decisions from the state to your local school district. Requires your school district to focus on eight key areas to help all students succeed. Gives your school district more flexibility for how to spend its money to improve local schools. Provides extra funding for our students with greater challenges. 4. It s a huge opportunity for us as parents to shape the vision for our children s education and make it happen. What can you do now? Find out what your school district is doing to engage you and all parents. Share your ideas directly with administrators and school board members. Attend a meeting or volunteer to serve on a committee. Talk with your children s teachers and principle about the new law. Talk with other parents and connect with your local PTA. There is help. It s the PTA It doesn t take much time to get a Parent Teacher Association started either. Find just one parent in your school to take the lead, and before you know it, there will be a group of dedicated parents doing what PTA does best: providing resources and programs to all families. PTAs Benefit Everyone PTA addresses issues that are important to parents and public school administrators. We fight for full funding, quality teachers, and capabilities for schools to thrive. If your school or district does not have a PTA, now is the time. Membership is open to everyone. Your PTA is autonomous but supported by a national structure. It sets its own dues. 9 REPORT FROM THE HISTORIAN Annual Unit Historian Reports are due to Councils by May 15, This is the time to calculate your volunteer hours. Margarita Gonzalez This is a sample of how to calculate a group of 10 parents. 1. If each volunteer is spending one hour a day, that equals out to be 10 hours/day. 2. If each volunteer is coming out 5 days a week, that equals out to be 50 hours/week. 3. If each volunteer comes out every week, 4 weeks times 50 hours, which equals out to be 200 hours/month. 4. There are approximately 9 months of school per year, 200 hours times 9 months, equals 1800 hours per year!!! Volunteer hours that can be counted are: 1. Monthly Board PTSA meetings, Association meetings, workshops and other functions related to PTA work. 2. Welcome Back to School preparations, welcome back teachers snack or luncheons. 3. Time spent writing PTA agendas, minutes, correspondence, reports, newsletter articles. 4. Time spent on PTA related activities at school or within the community 5. Telephone time regarding PTA business. 6. Travel time to and from PTA activities. 7. Convention attendance (except time spent sleeping and eating). 8. Baking and shopping for PTA functions. HELP US COUNT UP ALL THOSE HOURS WE GIVE TO CHILDREN BY VOLUNTEERING IN OUR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES! Please compile a paragraph or two of what you did each month beginning with the month of July. For example, July, our PTA began with a Planning meeting, plans with what our school and PTA were going to do. August, we held a welcome back to school luncheon and a breakfast buffet for the teachers. September, we held our membership drive. And so forth. All you PTA s have great ideas for helping your children with fundraisers and events. This way we can share ideas and fundraisers that have worked well with your school. This is your time to boast of all that you do for your school and for your CHILDREN, for all CHILDREN!!! Thank you for all your support for the last couple of years. Keep on going with the great job you are doing for our community and for our children. REPORT FROM THE REFLECTIONS CHAIRMAN Marya Ann Garvey REFLECTIONS UPDATE Dream, Believe, Inspire is what the more than 750 people experienced while viewing the Tenth District PTSA Reflections Exhibit on March 2 nd. Four-hundred-forty-four (444) Reflections entries in literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, musical composition, and film production from twenty-seven (27) participating PTA/PTSA units were recognized by our district judges and displayed in this exhibit. The judges selected twenty-seven (27) entries to forward to the California State PTA for further consideration. Tenth District is proud to announce that ten (10) of these entries were recognized by the state PTA judges. 10 INFORME DA LA HISTORIADORA Margarita Gonzalez El Informe Anual del Historiador de Unidad se debe a los Concilios en Mayo 15, Este es el momento de calcular sus horas de trabajo voluntario. Este es un ejemplo de cómo calcular un grupo de 10 padres. 1. Si cada voluntario pasa una hora al día, es igual a 10 horas/día. 2. Si cada voluntario sale 5 días a la semana, es igual a 50 horas/semana. 3. Si cada voluntario sale cada semana, 4 semanas por 50 horas, es igual a 200 horas/mes. 4. Hay aproximadamente 9 meses de clases al año, 200 horas por 9 meses, es igual a 1800 horas por año! Horas de trabajo voluntario que se puede contar son: 1. Juntas de la Mesa Directiva PTSA mensuales, Juntas de Asociacion, Talleres y otras funciones relacionadas con el trabajo de PTA. 2. Preparación de la bienvenido a la escuela, bienvenidos a los maestros bocadillo o almuerzos. 3. El tiempo dedicado en escribir la agenda de PTA, minutas, correspondencias, informes, boletines. 4. Tiempo que estuvo relacionado en actividades de PTA en la escuela o dentro de la comunidad 5. Tiempo que estuvo con el teléfono respecto a negocios de PTA. 6. Tiempo de viaje y actividades de PTA. 7. Asistencia a la Convención (menos el tiempo que estuvo durmiendo y comiendo). 8. Cocinar y compras para las funciones de PTA. AYUDENOS A CONTAR TODAS ESAS HORAS QUE LE DAMOS A LOS NIÑOS POR SER VOLUNTARIOS EN NUESTRAS ESCUELAS Y COMMUNITIES! Por favor, compilar uno o dos párrafos de lo que hizo cada mes, comenzando con el mes de Julio. Por ejemplo, Julio, nuestro PTA comenzó con una reunión de planificación, con lo que los planes de nuestra escuela y PTA van a hacer. Agosto, se celebró un almuerzo de bienvenida regreso a la escuela y un bufé de desayuno para los maestros. Septiembre, celebramos nuestra campaña de membrecia. Y así sucesivamente. Todos ustedes PTA's tienen grandes ideas para ayudar a sus hijos con la recaudación de fondos y eventos.
