Comparative or superiority 2. Comparative of equality 3. Comparative of inferiority Tells for how long something has been going on FORMULAS 1. Comparison of Superiority more than In English you have regular comparison: Ex: more beautiful than You also have irregular comparison for the short adjectives Taller, smaller, slimmer, smarter (one cannot say more tal, more small EXCEPTIONS Better than Worse than Older than Younger than Mejor que Peor que Mayor que Menor que 1. More than más + adj / adv. + que Ella es más alta que su hermana. When it is followed by an expression of quantity que becomes de My sister has more than 10 dolls. Mi hermana tiene más de diez muñecas. The blonde lady is more than 30yo. La señora rubia tiene más de 30años. 2. As as tan + adj. / adv + como Paco es tan alto como Jeff. As much as tanto/a + noun + como Mi hermano tiene tanta tarea como yo. As many as tantos / a + noun + como Ns. tenemos tantos amigos como Paco. 3. Less than menos + adj/adv. + que Jay Leno es menos gracioso que Jimmy Fallon. AFFIRMATIVE Hace + time + que + (subject ) pronouns + present tense of the verb Hace dos años que nosotros estudiamos español. We have been studying Spanish for two years. NEGATIVE Hace + time +que + (subject) pronoun + NO + present tense of the verb Hace tres meses que yo no veo a mi abuela. I have not seen my grandmother in three months. INTERROGATIVE Cuánto* tiempo + hace + que + (subject) pronoun + present tense of the verb? Cuánto tiempo hace que tú estudias español? How long have you been studying Spanish? * Cuánto is subject to change if we have different periods of time Cuántos años? How many years? Cuántos meses? How many months? Cuántos días? How many days? Cuántas semanas? How many weeks?
2 HAY QUE vs TENER QUE Tener que (to have to) used to express an obligation (personal, needs to be conjugated) Hay que (one has to) used to express an obligation (impersonal, NO + INFINITIVE (unconjugated verb) Los alumnos tienen que llevar el carnet de identidad a la escuela. The students have to wear ID at school. Hay que llevar el carnet de identidad a la escuela One has to wear ID at school. Se prohíbe = It s forbidden No se prohíbe It is not forbidden No se permite = It s not allowed Se permite = It is allowed + INFINITIVE (unconjugated verb) Se prohíbe comer en la clase It is forbidden to eat in class No se prohíbe comer en la cafetería. It is not forbidden to eat in the cafeteria. No se permite mandar mensajes en la clase It is not allowed / permitted to send texts in class. Se permite mandar mensajes en la casa. It is allowed / permitted to send texts at home. SABER vs. CONOCER Both mean TO KNOW Here are the differences: SABER CONOCER Sé Sabes Sabe Sabemos Sabéis Saben Conozco Conoces Conoce Conocemos Conocéis Conocen To know a fact or an information To be familiar or acquainted with a place or thing Yo sé que ella estudia mucho. Ana sabe dónde vive Pedro. To know how to do something Sabes tú cocinar? To express knowledge or ignorance about something Mi hermana no sabe nadar. Mi madre conoce Nueva York muy poco. Mis padres no conocen a mi novia. Also means to meet Mi hermano quiere conocer a LeBron James.

5 III. Hay que vs. Tener que / Se prohibe / No se permite 1. Reading comprehension Read the text below and answer the questions in Spanish. Raúl, Juan y Pablo son tres amigos de Nueva York. Ellos estudian en una escuela muy grande. Hay que obedecer las reglas de la escuela. Todos los días ellos van a la escuela en autobús. Raúl es guapo, artístico pero muy perezoso. Juan es muy organizado y paciente. Pablo es también estudioso pero desordenado. Raúl tiene que estudiar para la clase de inglés. Pablo tiene que prestar atención en la clase de matemáticas. Todos tres tienen que leer Scarlet letter en la clase de Inglés. En la clase de inglés se prohíbe traer los teléfonos. Después de las clases ellos tienen que jugar al fútbol. Por la noche, se van a la casa de Pablo para estudiar porque el próximo día (next day) ellos tienen un examen en la clase de inglés. La clase de inglés no es fácil, ellos toman muchos apuntes en la clase. 1. Dónde estudian ellos? Los tres amigos estudian en una escuela grande en NY. 2. Cómo es Raúl? Raúl es guapo, artístico y muy perezoso. 3. Quién es paciente? Juan es muy paciente. 4. Qué tienen que hacer Pablo y Raúl? Pablo y Raul tienen que prestar atención en la clase de matemáticas. 5. Qué tienen que leer en la clase de inglés? Ellos tienen que leer Scarlet Letter. 6. Qué se prohíbe en la clase de inglés? En la clase de inglés se prohíbe traer los teléfonos 7. Adónde se van por la noche? Por la noche se van a la casa de Pablo para estudiar. 8. Qué tienen que hacer después de las clases? _Después de las clases ellos tienen que jugar al fútbol. Translate into Spanish: 1 One has to bring school materials to class. Hay que traer los materiales escolares a la clase. 2 It s forbidden to send texts in class. Se prohíbe mandar mensajes en la clase. 3 It is allowed to ask question in class. Se permite hacer preguntas en la clase. 4 Lisa has to drive carefully (con cuidado) Lisa tiene que conducir con cuidado. 5 One has to take notes in class. Hay que tomar apuntes en la clase. 6 It is permitted to speak in Spanish. Se permite hablar en español. 7 We have to come to school daily. Nosotros tenemos que ir a la escuela todos los días. 8 It is not forbidden to go to the bathroom. No se prohíbe ir al baño. IV. SABER vs. CONOCER - Translate into Spanish: 1 I know the French teacher. Yo conozco al profesor de francés. 2 My sister knows she needs to study more. Mi hermana sabe que ella necesita estudiar más. 3 Do you know my grandmother? Conoces tú a mi abuela? 4 She know when the train leaves. Ella sabe cuándo sale el tren. 5 Juan knows that Carmen lives on Aurora Juan sabe que Carmen vive en la calle Aurora. Street. 6 Sr. Reyes doesn t know the new student.
