2 ST. PATRICK CHURCH MOUNT DORA, FLORIDA Religious Education: Middle School, Confirmation, and High School religious education will begin on Wednesday, September 18 th from 6:30-7:45. You must be registered before you can attend class. Middle School Youth Group Meeting: Mark your calendar as our first Middle School Youth Group meeting for 6 th through 8 th graders will take place from 4:00 6:00 on Sunday, September 8 th. ADVOCACY AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE Contact Bernie Welch (352) or Terri Stephens (407) BLOOD MOBILE October 20 th and December 15, LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OF THE TABLET (17 August 2013) Lessons from the Orthodox On his journey home from Rio, Pope Francis was questioned by journalists about among much else remarriage after divorce (The Church in the World, 3 August). While affirming the Church s official response, Francis demonstrated an openness to the possibility of development. Interestingly, he alluded to the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Eastern Orthodoxy affirms the evangelical principle of indissolubility no less strongly than does the Roman Church. However, Orthodoxy retains a particular sensitivity to the tension between the claims of indissolubility and the tragic reality of marital breakdown. Thus, an Orthodox theologian such as Alexander Schmemann can assert the paradox that while marriage is indissoluble, yet it can be continually broken by sin, by ignorance, by selfish passion, by loss of faith or by the death of love. Orthodoxy s response is to recognize that here and now, in the concrete situation, the marriage is broken and ended, and to concede the possibility, under certain conditions, of a second union. The theological foundation of this practice is God s infinite mercy and condescension in favour of sinful humanity, diffused now in the Church. At the same time, the claim of marital indissolubility implies that a second union can never possess the full symbolic, sacramental dimensions of the first: significantly, a penitential element permeates the ritual for second marriage. Archbishop Müller recently rejected this stance as not what God wants, and has distanced the divorced-and-remarried from any such appeal to God s mercy. But may even the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith simply sweep aside a tradition dating back to the early centuries of the then undivided catholic and apostolic Church? The Roman Church has never formally and explicitly condemned the Orthodox position. Likewise, the Orthodox do not reject as erroneous the more legal Roman stance. Vatican II recognized the traditions of the Eastern Churches as an integral part of the Church s catholicity. May we not hope and pray that a door may be opened to potentially fruitful dialogue in this matter? (Fr) Martin J Clayton Sheffield, South Yorkshire Nurses Needed!
