1 Forklifts of different sizes, shapes, and capacities may be used on the jobsite to move material, off-load delivery trucks, and pick up and raise loads to upper levels. Remember, it is a violation of OSHA regulations to operate a forklift if you are: 1) under 18 years of age, or 2) not properly trained and certified, even if you re over 18. Here are some recommended safety practices for forklift operators: Get a copy of the inspection checklist and conduct a full, pre-shift safety inspection before you start using the forklift. If you find problems, if the forklift is defective, needs repair, or is at all unsafe, do not operate it. Report any issues and remove the forklift from service immediately. Follow the manufacturer s maintenance schedule. Keep the forklift clean and free of dirt, grease, and oil. When you get onto or off of the lift, make sure your hands are clean and dry so they don t slip off the handhold or the grab bar. Wear non-slip footwear and make sure your shoes aren t covered in grease or mud. Watch your footing. If the lift is equipped with a seat belt, wear it. Don t overload the forklift. Make sure you understand the lift s rated capacity and that you know the weight of the load. Remember, if the load is not centered properly, the functional capacity of the lift may be reduced. Forklift Guidelines Be sure your path of travel is clear. Sound the horn to warn others that you will be moving. Use a spotter if your view is limited, especially when you re moving backwards. Drive slowly and cautiously. Always watch for pedestrians, blind spots, and your spotter. Be aware of your surroundings. Watch out for: other equipment operating in the area, bumps and holes, curbs and drop-offs, poles, bollards, and overhead power lines. Keep the forks as low as possible. Don t drive fast. Slow down when turning. Never turn with forks raised. Slow down in mud and on wet or slippery surfaces. If the forklift starts to tip, it s safer to hold on and stay with it. If you jump out, you could be crushed by the lift or the load. When you raise the forks up high, keep the load level and deploy the outriggers for some additional stability. Keep people away from the lift. Don t allow them to work under the load. Don t give anyone a ride on the forks. Don t use the forks as an elevated work platform. SAFETY REMINDER Be sure summer workers who are under 18 know that they can t operate a forklift on this jobsite. FURTHER DISCUSSION: SUPERVISOR/TRAINER NOTES:

No manejen rápidamente.
